My wife Kim delivered our son Nikolas Drew today (Tues) at 6:24PM PDT. Mom & Baby are doing just fine. Nikolas is 5lbs 1oz & 17.5" long. He was a couple of weeks early, but is healthy, alert and eating well. And luckily, he hasn't shown an interest in paper bags...yet! (Hi Jim P :-)) Cheers! #3. Wheel Bearing Runout - from Steve D'Gerolamo

Date: Wed, 05 Apr 2000 07:05:42 -0400 From: "Steve D'Gerolamo" <steved3@idt.net> Subject: Wheel Bearing Runout Tim, This might sound funny but check your front wheel bearings closely. I had the same problem last fall and discovered a bad left front bearing. It's the only thing I could find wrong, but the bearing showed me no other obvious symptoms (that I noticed) while driving. ================================================ Your brake rotor assembly mounts directly to the bearing/hub assembly. Many late BMW's have been showing excessive runout (.002" or greater) in the bearing assemblies....this .002" runout in a 6" diameter disk can be extrapolated to something much higher at the circumference of the 12" diameter brake disk. Fixed piston (big brake) calipers are much more sensitive to runout than stock BMW floating systems. The tires are in excellent condition and if you're interested, I'll give ya the tread depth (after I measure it ;). I also have (2) 225/45R17 and (1) 245/40R17 8080Es with 8.5k miles. Buyer pays shipping and local pickup (Brooklyn, NY) a possibility as well. Make me an offer. TIA, Chester ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I have been informed by the local ZF representative that instead of buying a new-one and pay to the BMW dealer USD $ 1100, he can remanufacture my rack by replacing all the parts (shaft o-rings etc) in a day time and give me one year guarantee. Therefore I kindly request you to give your point of view on this matter. Best Regards, Dimitris

Something like the toyo proxes or yoko avs sport will be around $800 alltogether. Personally, I don't think the higher priced tires are worth the extra $$ compared to these. But that's just me.. #9. RE: failure of suspension components - from Thissell, Jeremy

Date: Wed, 5 Apr 2000 09:59:15 -0400 From: "Thissell, Jeremy" <Jeremy.Thissell@USPTO.GOV> Subject: RE: failure of suspension components I don't have much personal experience, but when I took my car (328i out of warrantee) to an independent shop for some work, the guy had 2 E30 M3's in there being worked on. Interested, I asked about them. He said they are both dedicated track cars, one of which never sees any time other than the track. The guy who drives it has kept the whole thing stock (except for an oil pressure guage mounted on the steering column with an ace bandage---Go MacGuyver). Anyways, the owner's philosophy is to keep everything stock and the car will last longer. The shop guy said that several years ago the guy broke a front control arm just from driving (no crash, or OTE). Since then, they have replaced the control arms every year as preventative maintenance and have yet to have another one break. I guess the lesson here is that high stresses of track use in even a stock car will cause suspension failure eventually. I can only imagine that any increase in the stresses caused by stickier tires and beefed up suspension can only cause more damage more quickly. The shop guy said even the guy who runs all stock spends LOTS of money every year keeping the car going. I wish I could remember whether the wheels were stock (I think they were, because I remember being surprised), and I didn't think to check out what tires he was running. The other M3 in the shop had a set of 17" Yok's on there, but I don't know which ones, they had a distinctive tread though, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were track tires. One of the most interesting things about this story, is that the guy who keeps his car stock races along side his wife who also drives an E30 M3. Apparently she is very fast too. His and Hers M3's, I like the sound of that :-). FYI, the shop is called Kraftwerks owned by Bill Shook in Northern VA, and the two M3's in there were Black. Maybe one or more of you will recognize some of the people/cars mentioned in this story. Hi B Horlacher, I don't have the actual numbers for YOUR motor, but I had mine taken a couple years ago (when I did me a mild over-rev while playing with a Camaro SS --doh!) and the compression results were all in the 202-200 psi range. Mine is a 95 3.0 liter. I think the actual numbers are not as important as the VARIANCE between the readings. My mechanic told me that 5% was the factory tolerance. If that's the case (and someone pls correct me if I'm wrong), then your motor is out of spec. (FYI, he also told me variance readings can also be the result of an improperly calibrated tester) -----Original Message----- Date: Tue, 4 Apr 2000 10:04:58 -0400 From: "B Horlacher" <Horlacher@carrindustries.net> Subject: What should my compression be? I did a compression test last night my readings were 160, 160,160,165,175,175. The car is a 96 M3 with 42,000 on it. -----Original Message----- ...Annnnnnd since we're talking about badges again, I've got one that beats 'em all. There's a Nissan 300ZX Turbo (last gen) in my town with a pair of roundels on it. Yep. Someone put BMW badges on a perfectly respectable sports car. Why, I'll never know. There's one on the hood and one on the back, glued on right above the '300ZX' window. I've encountered this car on numerous occasions. One day I was behind it making a left turn. I saw the driver's eyes spy my rapidly closing M3 in his rearview mirror, so he gooses the throttle, emitting quite a spectacular cloud of blueish-black smoke and not nearly enough acceleration as he wanted. The plastic license plate surround on the back of his car read '200 MPH CLUB'. This car is an automatic. (before anyone berates me for street-racing -- I didn't. There was too much traffic) Finally, (somewhat related to badges) I know that some time ago, there was a availability of Jim C stickers with the shark motif on them. Can anyone tell me if they're still available? And if so, where I can get a set? I'd like to stick them on some magnetic pads and display them on my car at auto-x's. Thanks. Mike Chiang 95 M3 sharked, BL/SS
