The question is what is the mean time before failure. The answer is somewhere above 50k miles from what people here report. Of couse, yours could go 150,000 miles... or break today causing thousands of dollars in damage when it happens in a worse case scenario. I changed mine at 54,000 a month after I bough the car and before I ever took it to the track. High RPM driving seems to be a common, but not exclusive, failure mode. -- Ron Katona

#6. M3 Sucks! - from david tow

Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2000 18:23:59 PDT From: "david tow" <david_tow@hotmail.com> Subject: M3 Sucks! Hi, all, I was a little upset about Boneman's comment about the M3 (from the Vette Forum), so I wrote him a mail. If you think this is total WOB, please skip this: >Chris (Boneman), > >You almost killed me with your comment about the comparison >between a Vette and a M3! > >If you have never been in a M3, not to mention driving it, >how do you know the car sucks? A Vette is a heavy-weight >GT (or a sports car) whereas the M3 is really a sports >sedan! I was lucky enough to drive both, and I loved them >both for their own personalities and functionality. The people >bought these cars with different reasons. > >You might have had some previous experiences with certain >people associated with what they drove, but to beat up on a >car alone without testing it is totally unfair and biased. > >I hope you don't have the same preconceived judgment when >it comes to dealing with people. > >David The guy responded (obviously hasn't changed his mind about this): Hi David, Point well taken, and I would like to say that I am not a biggot, nor a racist, or have any preconceptions toward anything. The M3 is a great sports sedan no doubt, but it rattles my cage when people do a direct comparison between BMWs and Vettes. The cars are absolutely different beasts, for different purposes, and they are not even in the same price range. I got very mad when my friend made his in-your-face comment about his M5 being faster than the new Porsche Turbo. It was an arrogant statement, and the only thing it could have meant is "Who cares about your Porsche or your Corvette, my M5 is better, so you lose." I really can't hold it against my friend as he has always been a good guy, but his father is the President of Yale New Haven Hospital (Yale University's hospital and med school), he attended prep school, then "somehow" got into Yale with straight Cs when transferring from Hobart. He has learned the art of B.S.ing from his arrogant Yalie friends, and I'm sure they were the reason he bought this car, and probably during one of their blowing-sunshine-up-your-ass get togethers they informed him of the new BMW's capabilities, which are, entirely false. I don't have anything against Yale, and he does have some nice friends, but since his best friend is Chris Heinz (Yes- Heinz Ketchup) he couldn't help becoming slightly conceded. The part that gets me is that he knows nothing about cars, and before his M5 he had an old Jeep Wrangler, so to make obnoxious comments about other people's cars is pretty annoying. I didn't even mention that after he stated that the M5 was faster than the new 911 TT, he proceded to say it was the fastest car built. It pissed me off because I had brought my Vette over to show his father, who owns a '98 911, and I didn't even know Tom (the M5 owner) was home. I took him for a ride in the Vette and the whole time he wouldn't shut up about how great Bimmers were, until I floored it when it was slightly wet out at about 65 and spun the tires- that shut him up pretty quickly. With the exception of my friend Pete, I don't like the holyier-than-thou attitude of BMW drivers. Even the other day at my work, I saw a young guy (an intern) who just got a used light blue 525, I said "Nice car, I like the color". He said "Is that your Vette? You should've gotten the new Z8". And this is why I hate Bimmers- Especially in Connecticut- people think it's a license to be a dick. The only BMW I like is the Z3, people who drive those are generally people who just wanted a kick-ass roadster, but something a little more than a Miata. That is what my friend Pete has, and I enjoy the car when I ride with him, because he doesn't think he must be better than everyone because he's driving a Bimmer. Car people drive Z3s, and I'm sure the same type of people will drive the new Z8, but in my opinion, MOST (not all of course) people who drive new M3s or M5s do it for status. Maybe should have been clearer by saying that yes, I think the M3 sucks, but not so much because of the car (which is top-notch), but because of the arrogant sniveling bastards that I tend to see driving them. How often do you see BMW drivers waving to each other? I've NEVER seen it. Vette guys? 4 of the last five vettes (all generations) have given me a wave, and the fifth one didn't see me (I ran into him later and he waved). And I'll tell you for sure that BMW drivers in CT have the worst reputation of anyone on the road. So I don't know, I'm sure the M3 is a great car, and probably the best sports sedan out there, but I don't want the reputation that comes with it- and I think that's a shame. Has anyone ever definitively figured out when BMW actually changed to the new style impeller? My 4/96 build date '96 M3 now has 66k miles on it, and I'm getting concerned about the water pump. I originally was thinking I would just wait for it to fail and let my extended warranty buy me a new one. Rich Buchanan's horror story has me thinking I should go ahead and change it if I have the plastic impeller.

Hmmmm...he's driving a Vette looking at other Bimmer drivers to wave to each other? Granted, I wouldn't imagine many 750iL drivers waving to me and even in New York, M3 drivers rarely give me a nod, but I would venture to say that M3 drivers are generally enthusiasts and wave. Actually, most of the time in NY, I rarely wave to fellow M3 drivers. Instead, I floor it and see if he/she takes the bait. It's then that I know the person is an enthusiast and will wave when the little moment is over. That's how I weed them out ;) There were two memorable moments when this happened. Once was when I saw this red E30 M3 following me North on the FDR drive. I down shifted and let 'er rip and he gave chase. When I finally got off at 42nd Street, I saw him continue on the FDR drive and gave me a wave ;) The other time was after getting my car serviced at Wide World of Cars. Driving back south on the Palisades parkway. As soon as I merged onto the Palisades, I saw this black car approaching in the right most lane (the lane that I needed to merge onto). I goosed it and quickly leaped out in front. He gave chase for a while but then got held up in traffic. I eventually stopped for gas and after I got out of the car, opened the gas cap, stuck the nozzle into the tank (against NJ law, but I still do it), and then gave the car a once over, I saw the black E36 M3 approaching. I gave a wave as he passed and he honked the horn. Cool. About his comments about 'Vette dudes waving to each other. I'm sure that there are your fair share of asshole, punk-ass dip-shits that think they're all that. C'mon. You put a big ass engine onto a massive hulk of a car and stuff fat rubber on the wheels...of course it will pull the G's and accelerate. That's the story of the Viper, 'Vette, and Mustang. I dunno about you, but I still find the steering wheel of the Viper the most hideous thing. Can you sharing the parts bin with a Caravan? Yeck. If you're heading to UUCFest on Sunday, I hope to see you there. Hopefully you won't be able to identify me as the dude with the swollen right cheek ;) Have a good weekend, Chester --- david tow <david_tow@hotmail.com> wrote: > Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2000 18:23:59 PDT > From: "david tow" <david_tow@hotmail.com> > Subject: M3 Sucks! > > Hi, all, > > I was a little upset about Boneman's comment about the M3 (from the Vette > Forum), so I wrote him a mail. #9. Re: [E36M3] E36M3 Batteries - from Bob Dorchester

Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2000 18:45:48 -0500 From: Bob Dorchester <rjdorche@concentric.net> Subject: Re: [E36M3] E36M3 Batteries I replaced my 5 1/2 year old original Douglas battery last September before it had a chance to fail. Checking water level at least twice a year was adequate; also the M3 was my only vehicle and driven daily. To save weight and eliminate worries about a leaking battery case, I chose the Optima D750U Deep Cycle battery (750CCA, 65 A-hr ratings). It's a very snug fit vertically. I have it through-bolted in the battery compartment and the cover tray just barely latches. Coincidentally, I purchased a Mazda B4000 pickup at almost the same time to use as a daily driver. Increased business miles, expired M3 warranty and suspension mods made this an easy decision. The M3 is now driven only 2-3 days per week (no cold storage here in Houston, thankfully) and I have had no problems with the Optima. Shortly after I purchased it, some listers reported a higher charging voltage requirement for the Optima that could lead to shortened life. If there are any problems, I will be sure to report them.
