If I look at the chart in my owner's manual, essentially every oil listed doesn't cover the high temp extremes except for the heavier oils (such as 5W-40, which BMW just superceded with 5W-30). The big unknown is the catagory listed as "Special Oils". Nothing specific is mentioned, but it shows a bar that covers all extremes (hot and cold). So, this could mean 0W-30 for Alaska, and 15W-50 for Texas. But, without details from BMW, nobody will ever know. -rb >From: Gerry Miranda <gerry_miranda@yahoo.com> >To: Ron Buchalski <rbuchals@hotmail.com>, E36M3 <e36m3@bmwmpower.com> >Subject: Re: [E36M3] BMW Oil >Date: Sat, 3 Jun 2000 08:17:30 -0700 (PDT) > >Is it just me or does any one not worry that going >against mfg. spec for oil is bad be it thicker or >thinner. > >I would have assumed that a thick oil like 15w-50 >would flow slower through some of the very tiny oil >journals in the engine.....(that may cause oil >starvation) > >Gerry ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

I am however, a stickler for manufacturer recommendations so I hesitantly went with the new lighter oil. I have been to the track with the new oil on a very hot day and had zero problems, no ticking, etc. My dealer sells the BMW (Castrol) stuff for $3.50/qt but other dealers in the area charge $7.00! I recall seeing a source for this aftermarket part, but I can't remember it right off. Can anyone suggest a source? And if anyone knows of a supplier of the water pump that will charge less than the dealer, I'd appreciate that info too. Thanks Robert Pace '95 ///M3

#7. BMW Parts Suppliers - from Steve D'Gerolamo

Date: Mon, 05 Jun 2000 12:31:58 -0400 From: "Steve D'Gerolamo" <steved3@idt.net> Subject: BMW Parts Suppliers ......Well, when I was doing oil change yesterday, I noticed that oil filters from SteveD where made in Austria, while new ones from Nick Alexander where made in Slovenia. So is it just a different shipment, or did BMW switch their supplier? Both filters have correct PN's stamped on them and have little roundels printed as well. ================================================= In ongoing efforts to keep parts prices down, BMW continues to change suppliers. They have used Donit filters (of former Yugoslavia) in the past.....this could be who is making the filters you picked up through your dealer. With the air filters, there's not much difference. However, with the oil filters for the M3, I much prefer the Mahle filters with the band around the pleating to keep the pleats evenly spaced for more effective filtering. FWIW, my neighbor has a '96 Porsche 911, and the factory foglights were replaced with a combination brake duct/PIAA foglight. It makes the front of the car look much cleaner than the standard large white foglight, and the PIAA foglights put out lots of light. It would be great if someone developed something similar for the E36 M3.
