#1. 14mm Hex Bit - from Ron Buchalski

Date: Mon, 05 Jun 2000 12:42:08 PDT From: "Ron Buchalski" <rbuchals@hotmail.com> Subject: 14mm Hex Bit I atempted to change the oil in the diff until I discovered that I need a 14mm hex bit to remove the drain and fill plugs. I made a trip to Sears, Pep Boys, and Trak Auto, and didn't find such a bit. The largest hex bits available were 10mm. Does anyone know where I can find one? I don't need a whole set (I already have one); I just need a 14mm bit, 3/8" drive. Thanks, -rb PS: Many years ago, after purchasing my E30 318i, I found that the transmission required a 17mm hex bit to remove the drain and fill plugs. I purchased one from $NAP-ON, and it's served me well...until now! ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Date: Mon, 05 Jun 2000 12:52:25 -0700 From: Jim Powell <jsp98m3@home.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] BMW Oil ... And oil filters The non-Austrian filters predate the lifetime oil change. Imagine..... I've seen E30M3's advertised with mileage in the high 30K mile range. I can see the advertisement...... Clean, low miles, one owner, 12 years old. Will do second oil change for new owner. Anyway, I digress as I am want to do :) The Slovakian filters in my experience are junk. I had 2 of 4 that were physically longer by a fraction of an inch and the large o-ring to seal the cannister lid was several thousands undersized. I couldn't get my filter lid to snug down. I took the oily mess in and gave it back to the dealer for a refund. I keep a few Austrian filters in my personal stock, hoarded like mad-money. He should be able to either recommend someone or point you to an Old Hickory Chapter (Brentwood) member who could help. If you aren't a CCA member, explain that you plan to join when you buy a car. And actually join. #7. Warped Floating Rotors - from Roy Kao
Top
Date: Mon, 05 Jun 2000 17:19:26 EDT From: "Roy Kao" <bimmerphile@hotmail.com> Subject: Warped Floating Rotors I need some help from fellow digesters who use the Euro floating rotors. I've not warped four sets of them and I don't understand why. I do about 3-4 driving schools per year and it seems that the rotors start to warp a few weeks after the schools. I've tried all kind of pad combinations, including going to a track pad beginning with the school in April but to no avail. On the street, I'm currently running stock M3 pads and for the track, I used the KFP Gold and now PF90 pads. I'm planning to use the PF-Z pads for the street and the PF90 for the track once I get my front rotors replaced again in a couple of days. If you have any idea why this is happening I'd really appreciate it. I do not have additional brake ducting installed and the foglights are not removed. I know many M3 owners who use this rotor and some have warped while others have not had such difficulties. Thanks in advance for your help. I know many M3 owners who use this rotor and > some have warped while others have not had such difficulties. Thanks in > advance for your help. Main reason is braking technique, most likely. Search the archives for Michael Lord's excellent write-up on proper brake technique (if you can't find it, I may have it saved at home). FWIW, I too tried the Euro floaters with PF90 pads - warped the first set. Switched to inexpensive Brembos (figured if I was gonna warp 'em, I'd warp 'em at $90/set instead of $250/set!) Still warped a few sets, but have been working on my braking technique, and this last set has worn out (reached minimum thickness) without warping. Yay! Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - thin but "true" front rotors
