#1. Driving/Racing Schools - from j.demartino@us.qiagen.com

Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 09:34:15 -0700 From: j.demartino@us.qiagen.com Subject: Driving/Racing Schools Peter, Consider that it may have been the way you asked. If you call an insurance company and ask if your car will be covered for a RACING school taking place on a race track, the answer will always be no. This is why all BMW DRIVING schools strictly prohibit timing devices. There is no reason why your insurance should not cover a DRIVING school as this in theory makes you a better driver. My insurance company, Mercury (big on the West coast) does cover DRIVING schools. I would not attend any track day event (again ;)) that incorporates a timed session for this reason. Racing schools (or associated driving schools) are great, and expensive, and will teach you about vehicle dynamics, but will teach you less about YOUR car. Maybe you might want to consider a new insurance company. Even if the rate is higher, you will save big $$$ by not paying Skip, or Ron, or Don thousands of $$$! You are already paying for your BMW, you may as well use it! John (not responsible for any ensuing wife rage!) I contacted my insurance company and they said that my car is _not_ covered, so my wife (who happens to work in corporate insurance) has said it is a no-go in the Bimmer. So, assuming I still want to do it, what are my options? I've already contacted Skip Barber, are there other options? Is it possible to rent a car for the day? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks! -peterg

Many places like Circle BMW or Pacific BMW will sell the brand new floormats for $87.50. Your price of $85 may be a bit high no matter what condition they are in. #4. Going, going... - from Hunter Johnson

Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 20:06:37 +0100 From: "Hunter Johnson" <HJOHNSON@dbmail.debis.de> Subject: Going, going... Gang, Sad news, but I've sold the 1998 M3/4. Fortunately for us, I the buyer is a CCAer already, so I know the car will be put to (ahem) proper use. But the fact was, I couldn't justify paying for a car in the U.S. when I didn't know when I'd move back, and it is more expensive and troublesome to ship the car here than you'd imagine. I intend to stay on the list for a while until I can't really offer anything more. (Some of you might argue that that time has come and gone, but let's keep this friendly). Since I stopped driving the M3 regularly last summer, I'm afraid my experience with the car is already becoming rather limited and dated. Before I tone down my involvement even further, I want to say that this group of gear heads is perhaps the most dedicated group in the biz. The combined information available here really helped me through a few upgrades and gave me a much more detailed understanding of my car -- which is a tall order being an engineer gear head to start with. It was always quite entertaining walking into the dealership and asking for XYZ and having them look at you funny, then find out that you're better informed than they are. An excellent case in point is the rear shock mounts -- my dealer didn't know they were prone to early wear. Add those of you who go as far as to catalogue spring rates and such, well, this dedication is pretty hard to find on other lists. More importantly, Suzy, being the glue holding this thing together, should be commended for keeping this list true to her vision. A terrific service indeed, one that BMW certainly doesn't appreciate the way they should. A tip of the hat for the list mistress, and as DEVO put it so succinctly, "Crack that whip!". It seems to me that the E46 M3 will be different enough from the E36 model so that it has its own faults, so I will be surprised if there isn't a separate E46 M3 list shortly. But I hope that the E36 list lives on, since these cars are going to be as coveted as the E30 M3, perhaps more, and this list serves all those second and third owners perhaps even more than us. It is amazing that WE are providing BMW with this marketing resource at no cost to them. Anyway, if you ever plan to visit Berlin, drop me a line. Hunter 1998 M3/4-less :(

I've heard that this combo will produce some good top end power, and keep pulling hard to redline. As most know, the 96 and on M3's start to fall off up in the higher ranges. They are for the 3.0L M3 and are made by Genie. The guy who has them ran them for about 12k miles and says they made good power on the car. I don't know but he wants $400 plus shipping on them. If you are interested reply to me and I will get you two in touch. They will work with a 3.2L street car also. Seth Thomas www.m3power.com www.m3ltw.com

THANK GOD they both broke at the same time and saved me a trip) i get to drive alot of rental cars. and the more i drive rental cars, the more i like them. - they have cruise control. - they have sunroofs. - they have automatic transmissions. - they have 4 doors. - they can hold alot of stuff (i'm moving this week and i'm actually stoked that i have a ford taurus for a few days with it's relatively HUGE cargo capacity to move boxes) - they can hold 4-5 people. - they don't pull to follow every road imperfection. - they don't give me a headache when i hit a pothole. - they don't require me going over speedbumps one wheel at a time. - they don't scrape on curbs. - they don't require monthly service. ;-P now... alot of those things could be had in a different M3. but some of them can't. so i'm left wondering... am i getting old or something? driving my rental car around town is SO MUCH easier. now... next time i go to the track, or on a fun mountain jaunt on a sunny day i'll appreciate my M3. but as a daily driver? i'm starting to wonder. when (not if) i get a dedicated track car (rollcage, harness, racing seat, the works...) i'm wondering if i want an M3 for a daily driver. maybe i'll keep the M3 for weekend (non track) driving, and get a commuter car? dunno... so i ask... if you were rich enough and had enough garage space for as many cars as you wanted. would you use your M3 to drive to work and to get groceries and to move boxes? ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

It would suck driving around in 90 degree weather without A/C here in Ga. Especially in rush hour traffic and not a breeze blowing. My girlfriend still laughs at me when she thinks about the first time I brought the car home. It was in July and hot as hell. I pull in her driveway to show of my new beauty, get out, and she starts dying laughing. I didn't get until I looked down and could see that I sweated through my shirt where the seatbelts had been. For some reason should did not want to ride in the car that day. Plus she did not want to be seen in a car with some ugly stickers on it. Oh well she loves to ride in it on the track though.
