#1. Bleeding Brakes with AST - from Jim Tilley
Top
Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2000 06:18:50 -0700 From: "Jim Tilley" <jtilley@lvcm.com> Subject: Bleeding Brakes with AST The Bentley's manual advises not to use the procedure in the manual for bleeding brakes on AST equipped vehicles and instead take the vehicle to the dealer. Does anyone know why? They mention safety and that special equipment is required. I had a brake fluid change quoted to me to the tune of $146 from a dealer. Most of it attributed to labor. Seems a little steep to say the least. Is it possible to do yourself and, if so , what does it take? TIA. Jim Tilley, jtilley@lvcm.com 99 ///M3

M3 convertibles didn't pass US >regs for a long time. lotus elises don't pass, mclaren F1s don't pass, the >old vw bugs still made don't pass, that porsche bill gates wanted to bring >here didn't pass. some companies (renault) don't even bother trying to make >cars that pass US regs anymore. they sell plenty to europeans. Ooooh, please don't say that we're the strictest for safety reasons....that's just not true. This is good ol' fashioned protectionism. If you don't think so, then why wouldn't Germany allow me to bring along my US spec M3/4 for any longer than a year? Certainly not because it is safer than a Euro spec one? Again, protectionism. According to Autocar magazine, after the F1 was crash tested at 35 mph into a fixed barrier, it could have been driven back to the factory. McLaren repaired it and put into use as a test sled for the BMW motor. It would pass DOT -- if it were tested. Likewise, the Porsche 959 was never crash tested by Porsche for DOT. I'm sure the Renault Spider, Lotus Elise, and [E30?] M3 Convertible would also pass if tested. There is essentially no difference between the ECE and DOT crash worthiness of cars. Some ECE tests are *harder* -- the offset frontal impact test, for example. You are exactly correct in that it is a matter of supply and demand. The McLaren, 959, and Spider were limited production run vehicles with 100% of the production taken by what we call ROW (rest of the world) markets. Why should I spend $5 million crashing an F1, plus the cost of the chassis, when all 350 are sold outside of the US? The E30 M3 cabrio? Well, I don't know the exact numbers, but the E30 M3 was never a big seller in the States. Why would BMW spend the bucks to certify the convertible version? The VW Beetle made in Mexico doesn't pass EPA -- this has nothing to do with crash safety. And I'm not so sure about whether our EPA laws are the strictest anymore -- the EU has really been cracking down on sulphur in fuel, which causes acid rain. I urge you all to write your congressman and senators to allow ECE vehicles into the States, just like Canada does (they allow both ECE or DOT). But make sure you mention that you want it changed to minimze protectionism, and avoid the "safety" theme. Later, Hunter

The impact was probably so severe that car is totaled anyway. I just saw on the Turner Motorsport site the other day that they have the M5 E39 floating rotors - expensive - but they do exist and can be had. David Holeman www.racepad.com

Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2000 09:18:11 -0500 From: "Holeman, David" <david.holeman@viaticus.com> Subject: Installing rear JTD mounts Hi Junaidi Irwan was asking about experience with the JTD rear mounts. I have a friend who installed them on his track prepared E36 325is and he felt that it helped firm up the backend and liked the handling. This part is primarily a track part. Remember the firmer bushing will mean more force will be transferred to the shock tower. You may not want this for street driving. If you get the point of installing these take a look at www.racepad.com for how to install rear shock mounts. David Holeman

#9. Alignment questions - from Paul Agustin

Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2000 10:09:13 -0500 From: Paul Agustin <agustin@iaxs.net> Subject: Alignment questions I took my 95 M3/2 to the dealer this past Monday to have an alignment done. Well after two hours they come and told me that they can't do an alignment due to the fact I have a stage 3 Dinan suspension. Is that a bunch of crap or is there some truth to it? I'm also skeptical about this dealership because the tech told me he thought I had a bent rim, after he looked at my tire wear. Well of course the inside edge of the tire is going to wear funny, I have -2.5 degrees of camber in the front. I think I have to find the other dealer here in town as they are a Dinan reseller, or can I bring it into a small reputable place and have them actually do it? Paul Agustin 97 F3 95 M3 93 ZJ
