I was about 14 or 16 and my grandfather bought a Volvo because all of his friends had one. Anyway, when it was time to pick up the car, I went with my grandfather and uncle to the dealership. While they were working on the boring stuff...er...I mean paperwork, I jumped into a few of the cars on the showroom floor. So I jumped into the passenger seat of one of the cars and flipped open the sun visor and turned on the vanity mirror lights. The lights go on and after a few secs, they kinda dimmed.... All of a sudden, smoke starts coming out of the top of the sun visor/roof liner. Oh shit! I quickly close the visor, but it's still smokin'. I then get out of the car and I mosey on over to the salesman and say, "'scuse me...um...er...yer car is on fire." The guy goes over to the car and sez, "Oh shit" and scrambles to unhook the damn battery. Needless to say that I wasn't allowed to go in any of the other cars that night...although I was thoroughly testing my grand daddy's Volvo on the way home. Is it me? Nawww..... =) Chester --- Jim Powell <jsp98m3@home.com> wrote: > Just check with the NYC Fire Department. Its been awhile since we heard > from him. I prefer Hendrick BMW from Charlotte, NC. Hendrick advertises 25% off list and seems to be the cheapest. Most all the other dealers advertise 20% off list. Nick Alexander advertises cost + 20%. I just purchased two M Double Spoke polished forged wheels - 8.5x17. Hendrick's price was the cheapest at $516 each. VOB BMW in Rockville, MD (which does not advertise their discount) had the same price. Nick Alexander wanted $22.80 more for each rim + $5 per rim more for shipping. I have previously ordered from Hendrick so I went with them again. BTW, Stephen Wolff would not sell rims via mail order - I tried. I'd call Hendrick or VOB and Nick Alexander for comparison. Perhaps Alexander's cost + 20% is less than 25% off list for some items. Not the rims I wanted. Meant to imply that the 325 is my race car...lots of storage space (stripped interior) and seats one (unless of course I am at a driving school). Sean, what type of cars do you race? I've driven "race" cars that were full tube frame chasis and I have to say that my father's LTW with 1200# coilovers and all the works is fairly close to being a race car itself, and my 325 isn't too far behind. Noted the LTW still weighs approx. 2800 pounds, but thats only because of class limitations. And it would benefit from the cage going through the firewall (again, a class limitation). Maybe you are talking about a formula car as a "race" car, to which I would say, yes, thats a completely different experience!! A rather enjoyable experience! If you are looking to try out a formula car, you might want to check with the Panoz school. They are supposed to be getting some school formula cars that will be 185+ hp, probably the fastest formula cars in the driving school business, plus you get to drive them at the famed Road Atlanta. -Bryan Watts

Not much you can do about it. The rims on a '95 M3 are too narrow for a 235/40 tire. For some reason, BMW used a rim narrower than any tire maker recommends for a 235/40 tire. As a result, the tire carcass has to deform to fit the rim. This causes the center to wear faster than the edges. In general, the rear tires wear much faster than the front tires due to the wear during aggressive acceleration. I'll bet your front tires are wearing out faster in the center as well unless you do a lot of aggressive cornering. On one set of 235/40 tires with the original rims I did about 9,000 miles of straight Interstate cruising. After 9,000 miles, the centers of my tires were nearly bald yet the shoulders had half their original tread. BTW, air pressure has very little to do with tire wear on modern steel belted tires. The "over inflated - under inflated" tire wear indication dates back to old bias ply tire days. Modern steel belted tires have a very flat tread regardless how much air is in the tire. You could put 80 psi (don't try this!) in a tire and it would not noticeably "round" out. Mounting a tire on too narrow of a rim has a much greater effect.
