#1. Let's throw out the Vanos! - from Paul Elliott

Mill, >Why do I always have the impression, that you get personally offended, if someone doesn't share the same view towards technical stuff as you?< See, Mill, I think the problem is, in your post which elicited Jim's response, you boldly declared: "> ... but on a race track, where spend 98% of the time in the 4000+ > rpm range it really doesn't do much. This IS a very bold statement. I find that, on this digest where lots of technical expertise hangs out, if you're not absolutely certain of a fact, to state it so boldly is to ask for trouble. Best to tread a bit more lightly in technical areas. One of the BIGGEST problems, and there are many, on the Bimmer.org junk heap, is that novice and technically naive posters make great and certain pronouncements...Problem is, with great regularity, they are so off based it hardly pays to read it...Except there are occasionally enough good posts that you wind up wading through the garbage, trying to sift for the good stuff. Point is that we read these boards for INFORMATION. If something is a guess, or in doubt, best to say so...We read this stuff, and dont want to go off on a tangent following half baked, or semi proven stuff. All that is required is a preface like, "I think...", or "I've heard....." , or "Isnt true that....". I think you'll find you'll get much better treatment, and lead many fewer readers astray. _____________________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3; <15000 mi; Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger

#2. Re: [E36M3] harness wear - from Miki Haraguchi

Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 18:38:04 -0700 (PDT) From: Miki Haraguchi <mharaguchi@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] harness wear I completely agree with Paul and what Racer Wholesale told him. I have a Sparco 5-point system in the LTW (which came with the car) and they have evidence of UV/heat/ozone damage, and the edges are fraying slightly at some friction points. They may be around 4 years old, maybe less. Parts of the nylon webbing on the belt closest to the driver's side door are stiff and hardened, which is not surprising since that's where the most exposure to the elements take place. Having admitted all this publicly, I have already given myself 40 virtual lashes for hypocrisy and inertia, and I am going to go buy a new Sparco 5-pt system *tomorrow* at my local speed shop. However, it's been a moot point for me over the last 3 weeks since the LTW has been immobilized since late May due to differential problems. :^( Miki > Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 18:08:32 -0400 > From: "Paul England" <ettsn@mindspring.com> > Subject: Re: Schroth Rallye 3 harness(es) > > Real racecar harnesses (not Schroth type) have date codes. #3. Help with Fire Extinguisher mounting - from Sf944@aol.com

Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 23:14:17 EDT From: Sf944@aol.com Subject: Help with Fire Extinguisher mounting I'm doing a D.E. event in a couple of weeks with a PCA region that requires fire extinguishers in advanced run group cars. What to do? I know specially designed brackets are available for our cars, but being the frugal type (OK, "cheap") I'd like to find a less expensive way. Years back I had bought a metal bracket and extinguisher at Home Depot for a grand total of $26.00, and screwed it thru the floor of my 944T race car. I'm not crazy about drilling holes in my M3's floor, so does anyone have suggestions on temporarily mounting a generic extinguisher? Thanks, Scott

#5. Speaker question... - from Brent Williams
Top
Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 22:58:52 -0500 From: "Brent Williams" <brent@williamsconsultingltd.com> Subject: Speaker question... Hey, I have a question... How hard would it be to fit 6.5" mid ranges in the kick panels of my car? I am considering an Infinity Kappa, or an Infinity Kappa Perfect component setup. I would rather have the 6.5 mids instead of the 5.25. The 6.5 inch speakers are 5 and an eighth inches in diameter. So, do you think that they will fit? Thanks in advance. Brent

You can indeed fit a 6.5" in the kick panel. I did so in both of my M3s. I am using the MB Quart Q-series 6.5" and tweeter set. There was some cutting required but I did not have to build up the kick panel. It all fit behind the stock speaker location. This was with the tweeter mounted like a coaxial too. The fit is very simple and you can see it at www.m3power.com If you have anymore questions about it email me back. Or you can make friends with the dremel tool and the 6.5" woofer will easily fit. While you're at it, saw off the fenders as well and bolt on some extra wide flared PTG fenders. YEAH! #10. Brake fliud - how much??? - from Ted Telesky

Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 02:37:29 -0400 From: Ted Telesky <TTelesky@compuserve.com> Subject: Brake fliud - how much??? I have a few questions about the brakes on my 95 M3... 1) How much brake fluid should I buy for my mechanic to do a flush? I can't find a quantity in the service manual... 2) Is ATE super blue the best choice - no track driving, just aggressive street... 3) Any comments on stainless steel brake lines as now is the time to do it as I am replacing the rotors and pads too. Thanks TedT
