#1. Overheating - from Joe Dyer

Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 21:49:34 -0700 From: "Joe Dyer" <joedyer@home.com> Subject: Overheating Yesterday, I had the great experience of a track day on Laguna Seca. My car is the one you all know from the July 1997 Road & Track Dinan test. Fearing that I might still have the plastic impeller water pump, I had it replaced, as well as the plastic thermostat housing, and the thermostat two days before the event. During the third session after about 60 miles on track, I experienced sudden overheating. Some fluid was blown out the radiator cap area. After over an hour, I was able to drive it home 80 miles away without further overheating. Admittedly, I was on the throttle very hard, passing several cars. Almost two years ago on Thunderhill race track, I had an almost identical experience after many track laps. The Powerdyne Supercharger performed OK although I'm sure I got it very hot. How about some technical advice here. New water pump, new thermostat, new belts, what could it be? Is the cooling system just marginally incapable of handling the extra stress of spirited driving? Comparing with another M3 (normally aspirated) we noted that my fan blade had little friction when spun by hand. How do you test a fan blade clutch? Could this be my problem? Thanks for any advise. My dealer had a "Warranty Blocked - Call BMW Customer Relations" message come up on their computer when my cat went bad. I made the phone call, and they were helpful in getting things cleared up. YMMV. (BTW, they DID replace my cat under warranty.) Jared

I saw a '97 M3 in Tulsa that had Dynaudio 3-way speakers installed in the front factory speaker locations. This set used a 7" woofer in the kick panel. YMMV. Jared

It could also be the auxilliary fan isn't coming on. It has nothing to do with the Supercharger. Or at least it shouldn't. Last Monday I ran all day, well over 200 miles, on the track at Buttonwillow in the high 90's and had no problem at all. The fan clutch could be bad. The fuse for the aux. fan could be blown or the sensor. Or you could have a big air block from mproper coolant fill after replacing the other stuff. Its also possible that while the car may be overheating, the cars cooling system doesn't know it. If the radiator doesn't have good airflow due to dirt blocking the radiator or a clogged radiator or air caught in it that the airflow hitting the fan and the other sensors don't have enough hot air hitting them to let them know the motor is cooking. And you are sure that you had overheating right? Could just be an overfill blowing off through the pressure cap. Probably lots of other stuff too but I'm heading back to the TV. What happened? When I was watching coverage was mainly on the Audi's, Vipers and Corvettes. Not much BMW or Porsche talk for that matter. Figured that meant bad news for the new PTG M3's. Hope I'm wrong. I long for the good old E36 M3 sweep!!!! ;-)) Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA 1st AS - '97 2nd AS - '98 & '99

'Round my neighborhood, if you win a race (or any other competition for that matter) and don't face the same challenge the next time, you know what they call it? A fluke.
