They are extremely easy to cross-thread, especially the outboard ones under the side panel. Date: Thu Jun 22 13:14:08 2000 From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: RE: [E36M3] 225 vs. 245 Front tires Pin asks: > I'm wondering what will be the difference (driving-wise) if I choose to > use 245/40-17 for my front tires instead of the 225 stock ones? JimB writes: I think the most noticeable thing will be the steering will feel heavier; you're now trying to turn a wider tire (greater resistance). I like the feel. Lowell adds: I too have 245/40 tires on 8.5 inch rims all around (actually I now have 235/45 Toyo FS-1 R-compound tires which are just as wide as my previous Michelin 245 tires). I upsized from the stock 235/40 tires on the '95 M3. Increasing the tire pressure slightly greatly reduces the "heavy steering" feeling. I run the same tire pressure front and rear - about 36 psi. If you bump the front tire pressure up 3-4 psi, I don't think you will notice much of a difference in steering feel. JimB writes: What size wheels would the 245s be going on? Stock 7.5"? Dunno if that will work, others may know. I agree. I think 235/40 tires are too narrow for 7.5" rims - no tire manufacturer recommends a rim narrower than 8.0" 245 is certainly too wide. Pin asks: > Why does BMW choose 225 for the front tires in the first place? JimB writes: I believe they changed from 235 all around on the 95s to 225F/245R in 96+ to increase understeer, from what I've heard/read. An understeering car is "safe" for an "inexperienced" driver - for most of us on this & other lists, we try to get rid of the understeer :-) Lowell adds: I think another reason (and perhaps the main reason) BMW changed the tires sizes on '96+ M3's is to increase the section height and give the rims a little more protection from potholes. '95 M3's are very easy to bend the stock rims with 235/40 tires - ask me how I know :-). 225/45 tires are theoretically taller than even 245/40 tires. The extra air volume is just enough to prevent dents from most potholes. I have not bent a rim since I went to 245/40 tires - albeit I also changed to much stronger forged rims. I don't know if you will notice a huge decrease in understeer with 245/40 vs. 225/45 tires in front. I actually did an experiment one time. I intentially swapped my 245/40 tires and 235/40 tires during a driving school. I ran the wider tires in the rear in the morning and then ran the wider tires up front in the afternoon. I really did not notice any difference. My M3 still understeered if you entered a corner too fast. I think the front suspension geometry has way more effect on understeer than tire width. Unfortunately, BMW has designed our M3's for understeer. Lowell Seaton '95 M3/2 Dallas, Texas BMW CCA #131505

Honestly how >often are you going to have 3 people in the back of an M3? I pulled it out >so it wouldn't flap around when I autocross. If you have kids (like I do), sometimes the rear center belt gets used. Also, if you have a child safety seat, the rear center belt is normally used to hold it in place. I've used two different approaches for dealing with the rear center belt: 1) Stick it under the rear bottom seat cushion 2) Roll it up and push it into the wide crevice in the center area of the bottom seat cushion (where it meets the back cushion). I think that the crevice was created for this purpose. The driving school instructor I had at my last track day (June 4) told me that some people remove the rear center belt and reinstall it on the driver's seat, to provide a second lap belt. Has anyone tried this? -rb ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 11:14:31 -0700 From: "Joe Huie" <jhuie@inreach.com> Subject: Euro Ellipsoids I just wanted to publicly thank Rob Hatrak, Peter Chen, Jim Basset, and Keith Fournier for their time and advice regarding the ellipsoids. I finally got around to installing them this week with the 100W bulbs (and high temp wiring harness from Josh at Eurosport) and I am truly impressed with the results (lighting ability, not my handiwork). I have to say that it's worth the cost and effort to put these into your E36, as mentioned by Rob and the others. Thanks again. Joe 95 M3
