Date: Sun, 2 Jul 2000 08:00:48 EDT From: Aswtguy2c@aol.com Subject: RE: [E36M3] Road and Track Vanos Comment Hi Roger!, You said on the M3 Digest, "The present issue has got a pretty good article on buying E36 M3s as a "used car classic". Among things to check for they say is the Vanos unit for proper operation, indicating that they typically expire at about 60K miles, without tripping the MIL warning lamp. So the question is....how do you check this for proper operation?" I didnt know the VANOS unit can actually wear out but checking it for be very difficult if you don't have the special tools BMW requires. Sometimes a loose chain tensioner can screw up VANOS timing. One thing you can notice though is if there is a powerloss across the low to mid rpms and hope the chain is so loose that the pistons will start kissing valves! As a technician, I simply check to see if the intake cam is advancing 8.5mm or 12.5 degrees. In the field, I hook up shop air into the oil pressure line for the VANOS and apply power to the solenoid. Of course the timing case cover is removed and #1 piston is at TDC firing. Hope this helps. Jonathan Caldito

The 2-man method can hurt check valves. Not sure how good vacuum type is. In the field, the technician will pressure bleed the system and at the same time, hook up a DIS or MoDIC to cycle the ABS/ASC hydraulic unit. A lot of people still use the pressure bleeding without cycling the hydraulic unit but it doesn't hurt the system. Hopefully the old fluid wasn't there for like 5 years or anything. No need to drop the transmission to bleed the clutch master cylinder! God I hope not! Jim, did you take out the old microfilter and did it come broken in 3 sections? Do the same with the new microfilter and make sure to remove the relay thats in the way. Hope this helps! Jonathan Caldito

Greetings group, I thought I had read recently, that there was a factory kit available for the hidiously annoying squeak of the '99 M3 clutch pedal. I've gone back through the past 2 weeks worth of posts, but couldn't find anything. Is there any truth to this, or have I suffered another ill affect of the '70's? If I've dreamed this up, who has the best published write up of fixing this at home? Many thanks, Greg ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Yep, broke the new one too. Just didn't see how that was gonna help. Eventually got it in though. Basically had to fold it up, put it in the space in front of the opening, and then unfold it into the opening. Felt like I tore the filter a bit, and swearing at it did seem to make it go in easier :-) But it's in now. Didn't see the relay to remove - maybe next time - HA! (And normally, I defend the BMW engineers, but if I ever meet the one who thought up *this* design.....) Thanks for the help, Jim Bassett - I'd rather clean 10 dirty ITG filters than replace another microfilter 1998 M3/4 - needs to be driven "well" as an apology for swearing at it :-)

I think the car is a little firmer now but rides and controls small bumps better. They're much better on track too. I'm very happy with the Koni's and would strongly recommend them. If your going to do the swap yourself, Pro Parts will build the front struts for ~$50 and the return of your old struts. So I ask the Sears rep, what would happen if I just leave the microfilter out after it builds up with too much dirt, he said, " Well the micron size particles won't be trapped, that's all." So, my question is what's the worst that could happen if I just remove that damn filter after it gets dirty?????? Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA 1st AS - '97 2nd AS - '98 & '99
