#1. What tire to choose?? and another question... - from Chris Turrisi
Top
Date: Thu, 06 Jul 2000 18:05:30 -0400 From: Chris Turrisi <cturrisi@worldnet.att.net> Subject: What tire to choose?? and another question... Jim, My definition of worn out is inside edges of the rear tires are showing cords....the rest of the tire has about 1/4 to 1/3 tread left.... The front tires are still showing some tread on the inside edges and about 1/2 tread left on the rest of the tires. The reason for this type of wear is that I have -2.5 front chamber and -1.7 rear chamber. I also have UUC sway bars (full stiff rear/middle front) and Biltstein double adjustible shocks on the car. I am going to have the car re-aligned after I get the new tires and front adjustable chamber plates. The question that I have for the group (I know I have a lot of questions) is: What settings do I go with? Originally the car with stock MXX3 tires and stock suspension and alignment wore the outside edges within 16,000-20,000miles Next with -2.5 chamber in the front and -1.7 in the rear and -1/8 total front&rear toe in, the SOII PP wore almost perfectly even for 6,000 miles Then with same suspension settings and just installing sway bars the tires started to wear the inside edges much more Finally with the same suspension setting and stiffer shocks I am getting terrible wear. I know this is due to the stiffer suspension not allowing for chamber changes in the suspension but I would like to know is how everyone with a stiff suspension is aligning their cars?? Thanks again, Chris T. 97 M3 At 11:36 AM 7/6/00 -0500, nabli@attglobal.net wrote: >Date: Thu, 06 Jul 2000 12:33:11 -0400 >From: nabli@attglobal.net >Subject: Re: [E36M3] What tire to choose?? > >Chris, > >Chris Turrisi wrote: > >> Date: Thu, 06 Jul 2000 11:03:49 -0400 >> From: Chris Turrisi <cturrisi@worldnet.att.net> >> Subject: What tire to choose?? >> >> Ok gang...I have finally worn out my 245-40 17 Bridgestone >> SOII Pole Positions after 20,000 miles and I am trying to >> choose on a which new tire to go with. > >What's you definition of "worn out"? :-) > >Jim > > >************************************************************* >List Commands >UNSUBSCRIBE - (in subject line) unsubscribes you from the mailing list. >************************************************************* >

Wasn't there a thread recently stating that BMW has seen some oil filters deteriorating after ~ 10,000 miles? 10,000 miles seems a bit long between oil changes, especially the way most M3's on this list are driven! Of course, YMMV, My .02$ worth, Mike '95 M3 da kar is yellow -----Original Message----- From: david tow [mailto:david_tow@hotmail.com] Sent: Thursday, July 06, 2000 1:57 PM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] 10k miles without changing?! Hi, all, My 95 M3 has gone over 10k miles since I changed the oil (BMW synthetic) and filter(OEM), and it's still on its last green light! 10k miles!? I am a little scared about the oil in the crankcase. Has anyone had the oil that old analyzed by a professional? I called the local dealer about this, and he said the synthetic oil and the filter can have the duration of over 15,000 miles. I am aware that this subject has been discussed before, but it would be still nice to hear some confirmation from you guys. #3. Squeeking Clutch pedal fixed. - from Matt Henson

Date: Thu, 6 Jul 2000 16:30:22 -0700 (PDT) From: Matt Henson <hensonator@yahoo.com> Subject: Squeeking Clutch pedal fixed. Hey Gang, Sorry if this is already common knowledge but I recall someone asking about a fix for a gerbil-infested clutch pedal. My '95 had been squeeking for months so I finally decided to fix it. I'd heard that spraying WD-40 on the spring would solve the problem. I decided to remove the spring and check it out. Well, in my case the problem was _not_ the spring. It was the actual bushing, way up at the top of the pedal. I removed the whole thing and genreously applied some thick grease to the pins and bushings. I put it back together voila - no more squeek. In fact it was so much smoother and easier to push that I had to start the car in neutral because I wasn't sure that it was actually disengaging the clutch. I was a little surprised to find that I could actually select first gear aftyer the car was started :-). Total time was about 2 hours. The hardest part is re-compressing the spring. I did this by pre-compressing it off the car and holding the compression with 4 heavy duty pull ties. It's only been about 1 week but the difference in feel is so big that I believe that this had to have fixed the problem. #4. ] Brake Pads x Brake Dust - from Paul Elliott

If you are, let me take a crack at it...Rotex is a sister company to Frictiontech, and both are subsidiaries of Raybestos in CAnada....Rotex is a Kevlar, semi metallic blend, which I've found to be an excellent pad for hard street driving..Unlike MM, they stop great when cold as well as hot. Unlike Deluxe, they 'bite' as well as stock and dont fade as quickly. And unlike both, they are quiet...They area also rotor friendly and long lasting...Ok, not Quite as clean as Deluxe, but Nothing is...But for me , Deluxe pads dont do M3 s justice either....Dont stop well enough...Anyway, after you try 'em, email me for where to send the reward, whatever it is! You can get 'em from Brake Warehouse... _____________________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3; <20000 mi; Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger

My local BMW shop (that I've had very good results with for >15 years) looked long and hard and came up with these. They seem to have initial bite as good as the stockers, have held up to several high speed, freeway off-ramp type stops with no fade, and have had almost no dust and no noise at all. My stock pads were making noise under light pedal pressure coming up to stop signs and it was driving my wife crazy, so these are great. Rotor wear looks fine so far with a nice even surface texture/color, but I only have about 800 miles on them so far. Cost was $150 for a full set. Regards, Steve Sharp San Jose, CA

I just tried mine at Ptln Intl raceway the 4th. Brand new Kumho V700 225/45 on stock 7.5 rims. First run started at 36 lbs all four, came in at LR - 49, LF - 48, RR - 46, RF - 43, Final run started at 38 lbs all four, came in at LR - 51, LF - 49, RR - 48, RF - 45, The right front was a little 'melted' looking at the outside tread, but all the tires seemed to have decent wear across them and no 'rolling over' on the sidewalls. Am I just a leadfoot and pushing them too hard? What would be their recommended initial pressures? I've NEVER experienced anything near a 13 lb pressure increase in a tire at the track! thx, dw 95 M3

#10. Thud Sound from the Differential - from Jason Sarich

Date: Thu, 6 Jul 2000 17:54:33 -0700 From: "Jason Sarich" <sarich_m3@prontomail.com> Subject: Thud Sound from the Differential Ladies and Gentlemen, I have a sound coming from my rear end that I have only heard when I have something heavy loose in the trunk. If I have it in 1st gear and rev up without shifting, and just let off the gas the rear end thuds, then I give it gas and it thuds again. In the morning when I put the car in reverse and pull out of the carport, the same thud. What it sounds like is I am missing teeth in the gears and when their is pressure on them (accelerating, or decelerating) there isn't a problem but when the in between is where their is no pressure. Has anyone else had this problem? What is the fix? Thanks alot, Jason Sarich ______________________________________________________________ Get Your Free E-mail and Homepage at http://www.prontomail.com
