There was some talk back a year ago, that TUV requires graphite in brake pads -- thus *black* brake dust on German cars. If there were no graphite in the dust, our wheels would look far cleaner. I emailed someone at http://www.tuv.com or http://www.tuev-rheinland.de/ to figure out the reason for this requirement and even got a prompt reply. Unfortunately, they did not understand the question :( I never had enought motivation to followup. Gleb

#4. Kumho tire pressures - from Bob Stommel

Date: Fri, 07 Jul 2000 17:28:14 -0500 From: Bob Stommel <rstommel@iquest.net> Subject: Kumho tire pressures You can't necessarily judge whether you are using the correct pressure by looking at the amount of tire edge rollover. Edge rollover is affected quite a bit by your suspension. I use Kumhos on my 97 M3 for driving schools and on my 88 M3 for club racing. The driving school tires are full tread; the race tires are shaved to 3/32 inch. Kumhos seem to work best when run at 40-41 psi hot on all four corners. On a hot summer day, that usually means starting around 30 psi front and 32-33 psi rear. Drive at least three or four fast laps AFTER everything is warmed up and then come in and adjust the pressures. Do this during the first session and you can usually leave them alone for the rest of the weekend. Bob Stommel >What an EXCELLENT question. I just tried mine at Ptln Intl raceway the 4th. >Brand new Kumho V700 225/45 on stock 7.5 rims. >First run started at 36 lbs all four, came in at LR - 49, LF - 48, RR - 46, >RF - 43, > >Final run started at 38 lbs all four, came in at LR - 51, LF - 49, RR - 48, >RF - 45, > >The right front was a little 'melted' looking at the outside tread, but all >the tires seemed to have decent wear across them and no 'rolling over' on >the sidewalls.

Unfortunately, didn't get to stay too long, my 8mo. old daughter had a friends b-day party to attend. JIM

#6. Bedding Pagid Pads? - from Drew Bamford
Top
Date: Fri, 07 Jul 2000 15:41:33 PDT From: "Drew Bamford" <drewbam@hotmail.com> Subject: Bedding Pagid Pads? Given that the subject of brakes has come around again, I've got a question about the Pagid pads that I recently installed: I installed 4 new rotors and new pads at all 4 corners about 500 miles ago. The instruction booklet that came with the Pagid pads (which I ordered from SteveD) explicitly said that I should not follow any special procedures to "bed" the pads to the rotors. I thought that this was a bit strange, but I am the kind of guy who tends to follow the directions. 500 miles later, my brakes don't have the kind of "bite" that they used to. They seem to require significantly greater pedal pressure for the same amount of braking when compared with the stock Textars that I removed. While I haven't tried heating the pads up to the point of fade (in what seems to be the typical bedding procedure), I have made some stops hard enough to engage the ABS or briefly lock-up a wheel. Is the reduction in braking effectiveness a consequence of the pads not being properly bedded, or are the Pagids simply less grippy than the Textars? Any advice on how to get that great M3 braking back is highly appreciated. drew | 98M3/4 with nice Euro rotors and slippery Pagids ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

You never mentioned which Pagid pads you got (though I'd be interested in the final outcome as I'm considering Pagid myself). The following is a link to the bedding prodedure for the *racing* pads so I'm not sure if it would be different (probably would be though). Even if this isn't info you can use, you can check out the rest of the site for info (didn't have time to fully search) or, at least, this may eventually help someone who's got the Pagid racing pads. http://www.pagidusa.com/beddingbt.html Hope this helps! Just a data point, but I replaced the initial oil in my 1997 M3 the day I brought it home with 15W50 Mobil 1. Changed it again at 500 miles, and again at 1,000 miles. After that it gets changed every 3,000 miles (only Mobil 1 with 15W50 summer, and 10W30 in winter). Always fill with 7 qts. Autox hard (ten plus events a year, into fourth season). 20,800 miles on car and never uses a drop of oil between the 3,000 miles. KNOCK ON WOOD <g>. Maybe I'm just lucky????
