Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 00:30:01 -0500 From: "Brent Williams" <brent@williamsconsultingltd.com> Subject: E46 sunroof switch... From what I can tell, it doesn't look good for the sunroof closing with the key. However, I am studying my E32 7 series, and find that it is very similar. Matter of fact I took most of the hints from the sunroof on the 740. So, it can be done, I will need to wire a relay into the double lock switch in the door, and hook it to the sunroof switch. If it works, I will let you know. Wish me and my multiple benley manuals luck. And keep in mind I still don't have time to replace the foglight that is broken. Go figure. Brent...Owner of the infamous E36 with an E46 SUNROOF MOTOR! ($40 used at junkyard, they sent me the wrong one! Go figure.)

The first time I used this product was on the last oil change to my E30 325i before I sold it to my brother. I felt that the car was smoother and more responsive right after the oil change. I'd used Mobil one and various other synthetic oil before, but I never felt an improvement as noticeable as this product. I thought it was just me (I'd better feel something after spending $8 per quart for this sucker). I now am glad that you confirmed my initial impression! Why don't I use it now? Well, this product is not all that easily accessible... #4. Lets Delrin AF the M-Z3 shift lever bushing - from RonStygar@aol.com
Top
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 04:12:48 EDT From: RonStygar@aol.com Subject: Lets Delrin AF the M-Z3 shift lever bushing Someone asked me to Delrin AF bushing a crimped, bent M-Z3 shift lever for his M3. I also did the shortened from above M-Z3 shift lever in my M coupe. Delrin AF, chocolate brown in color, is impregnated with 20% Teflon fibers. No lubrication required (slippery)(advantage). The bushing is hand reamed to exactly the right size. I've been told that there is little friction in a pivot joint, so doing this is a waste of time. Whatever the friction is, it is one-third less at the shift knob (ratio of the shift lever). Some use ball bearings. I always looked at ball bearings for use in things that go round and round, like bicycle stuff. The rotation of the M-Z3 shift lever bushing in an M3 is approximately 16 degrees on a third to fourth shift. As above, ball bearings may be a waste of time too. As a side note, the transmission selector rod joint bushing for my '00 M coupe has a different part number. Dimension wise it is identical to the one used in the M3. The difference is that the bushing is black in color instead of white. Could BMW be using black Delrin in this one? Ron@unofficialbmw.com FLY BMW Marlborough, CT www.unofficialbmw.com/ronstygar.html

And why didn't BMW think of it?! BMW thought of it. In my 1998 M3, you can close the sunroof (in addition to the windows) by holding your key to the right for several seconds. I guess they added that sometime after 1995. The reason the sunroof doesn't have one-touch close is that it doesn't have a pinch sensor. It's a safety issue, or at least a liability issue. BMW corrected this for the E46. Shouldn't be that hard to get what you want. Should take one E46 sunroof switch and motor, one keyless entry system, and either a competent alarm installer or a wiring diagram and about five beers. Plus the willingness to take full responsibility if you decapitate someone with your sunroof. (I'm surprised I haven't seen this yet in a bad action movie.) -- David Ripton dripton@wizard.net

Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 07:43:29 PDT From: "Ron Buchalski" <rbuchals@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: Oil Service Indicator Reset Without Peake Tool? Kevin, I've been resetting SI lights on my BMWs since 1989, and I've been using the same $5 device on all of them. A momentary push button switch, a pair of banana plugs, some wire, and a 35mm film container are all that you need. The instructions to build it were in a Roundel issue many years ago. The article is reprinted in Bentley's BMW Enthusiast book (along with several related articles and notes). Online, here's just about everything you need to know: http://www.unofficialbmw.com//repair_faqs/sil.html -rb >Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 20:07:26 -0000 >From: Kevin D. #11. Brake Pads, Brake Rotors and Vendors Survey - from Dorffer, Rich
Top
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 11:07:07 -0400 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: Brake Pads, Brake Rotors and Vendors Survey List Members, Questions regarding brake pads, brake rotors and associated vendors surface about ... ohhhh ..... every few posts between Chester stories, fog lights ranting and speeding inquires. I thought it would be nice to put together a very comprehensive survey to be completed by list members regarding list members ratings on the various OEM and aftermarket brake pads and rotors, separating the survey between street use and track use (as I have learned their is no perfect combination of these). I have a good idea of the various criteria the pads, rotors and suppliers would be rated on a scale of 1 to 10. I would compile the results, including the number of replies for each item rated, and return them in a document all could use as a reference point. I would probably submit the survey in an Excel document to be completed by list members. My questions are: If you would like to participate in a survey like this so that all the list could benefit from your vast experience and knowledge (shameless praising), please email me privately expressing your interest. If I get enough response, I will go ahead and put something together to submit to the list. If not, oh well. If you would like a survey like this done, what pads, rotors and vendors would you like to be included. Please email me privately expressing your requests. If you would like a survey like this done, what criteria would you judge pads, rotors and vendors. Please email me privately expressing your criteria. I am not sure this has really been done formally on this list (or elsewhere). I may or may not include the UUC digest in this as their experiences would be more varied with different models. I am more interested in the brake pads and rotors with respect to E36M3's. Who knows, maybe Suzy would even include something like this (the survey results) on her world renowned web page. Thanks for your time. Best regards, Rich 95 M3 (stock pads and rotors)
