#3. Anyone ever buy a BMW Pioneer setup to replace Alpine? - from Skip Bogard

Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 12:54:10 -0400 From: Skip Bogard <skip.bogard@alumni.duke.edu> Subject: Anyone ever buy a BMW Pioneer setup to replace Alpine? Has anyone totally replaced their Alpine head/CD unit with the Pioneer head/CD combo ('95 non-I-bus version)? If so, do you like it? We've heard hundreds of complaints on the Alpine unit but zero on the Pioneer...are there many Pioneers even out there? I figure either there 1) aren't many or 2) the owners are very happy. I like the factory head unit look and don't want to give up the orange display (specified by BMW to be exactly 605 nanometer wavelength) or matte black finish. However, I'm about ready to ax-murder the Alpine co-op student who designed the cartridge sucking/spitting M3 CD player if fuel prices should ever come down. I hope to find a better solution before then. - Skip

#5. Time has come to modify the M3... - from vernon@sprynet.com

Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 14:01:05 -0400 From: vernon@sprynet.com Subject: Time has come to modify the M3... Well, since Suzy has asked for more relevant posts about us tinkering with our M3's....here's a preview of my plans for late summer/early fall: I have decided to keep my 98 M3/2 when it comes off lease in January instead of getting an E46 M3 or a Z06 Vette (the new Z06 ones are very tempting....) So instead of getting a totally new street/track car, I've decided to take the old faithful stock E36 M3 to the next level. A big thanks to some folks who I've been already talking to (Steve Hazard, etc.) for advice and thanks in advance to all of you out there who I'm gong bug with posts and questions. I'm going to try to keep the car functional as a daily driver but make it a locally competitive ESP car and still good at the track (read: fast, still somewhat forgiving and fun). I think I can pull it off with some well-thought-out mods. Here's what I'm planning on: Suspension - either a Koni coil-over kit or Koni adjustables and H&R sport springs. Camber plates, F/R sways, strut tower brace, X-Brace (also likely to look at rear control arms and shock mounts) Brakes - keep stock system with floating rotors and PF90's for the track, stock rotors and PF Z's for street/auto-x Roll bar and harnesses (have needed these for a long time :) Exhaust - mainly for improved sound (stock has always been too quiet) and maybe a few HP Engine - nothing at first, next year look at intake and software Other things I'm thinking about are a tranny brace and maybe a few other things. I'm willing to live with the camber-induced tire wear and a stiff ride. I'm leaning towards the coil-overs because of the adjustable ride height. So, my first question about this adventure is - anything major I should think about with this proposed setup? I'm planning the changes possibly for mid-late August so I'll have the fall to sort out everything and get used to it for 2001. Thanks - I'll be posting questions and progress updates as I go in the coming weeks! Vern Anderson 98 M3/2 Stock, but not for long...

Matt, did you notice any binding at all before you put the grease on the bushing? My 95 has a very small squeak and a very slight binding feeling with at the very bottom of the clutch travel that comes and goes, maybe weather related but not sure. A local shop thought it might be a throwout bearing but maybe mine just needs what you did. I have a Sachs clutch that other than this works great. Anyone tried these?> Hey Mark, I have run Pagid Orange Pads on my Track 911 for the last 3 years and couldn't be happier. I have never experienced brake fade with them and I use them quite hard. They seem to be a popular pad with the Porsche crowd. I actually have used them for everyday use on the car and they work good on the street to but they do make a lot of noise at times. They dust less than my stock M3 pads as well. However, I have heard they are rough on rotors. So far mine have held up just fine. I think the general public would find them too noisy for street use but for the track they are great. I was actually surprised to find out that no M3's I know run these pads. Either they have just not caught on or PF-90's are soo good that no one wants to try them. I have a set of Pagid Oranges for the track and Red for the street. Orange will eat up your rotors unless they're up to temp (track conditions). They're all dusty but grab great. The Reds are very progressive unlike the stock pads but grip better. It could be that I have Brembos but I like the pads and can live with the dust. -Bobby '98 M3 Big A$$ Brembo Brakes :) > -----Original Message----- > From: Darling Christopher AMC/CEOP [mailto:chris.darling@scott.af.mil] > Sent: Thursday, July 13, 2000 12:34 PM > To: E36M3 > Subject: [E36M3] Pagid Blue (was Track Brake Pads) > > > Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 14:19:23 -0500 > From: Darling Christopher AMC/CEOP <chris.darling@scott.af.mil> > Subject: Pagid Blue (was Track Brake Pads) > > > But has anyone tried the new Pagid Blue pads yet????????????????????? > S'posed to be a high performance pad. #11. [E36M3] "currsed"? or "expecting too much" - from Sean Hester

Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 14:10:54 PDT From: "Sean Hester" <seanh_race@hotmail.com> Subject: [E36M3] "currsed"? or "expecting too much" for those that are keeping track of my life, you know i sold my 95 M3 that was falling apart, and needed to be in the shop once a month, for another 95 M3 with 50,000 less miles and no track time. today, almost one month to the day, after i bought it it's broken and in the shop. for several things. the biggest one being: - the fuel filter (or is it a pump?) that's under the back seat broke thereby sending gasoline into the cabin of my car (and not to the engine). several other ones being: - left rear seat belt tensioner/seat back clip broken. - sunroof motor making horrible noises, probably a prelude to breaking altogether - drivers mirror/visor (or maybe the clip holding it, i'm not sure) messed up so that the visor won't stay in the clip - glovebox won't stay closed - drivers door VERY hard to swing and close. doesn't seem to be the "common" latch problem, but a problem with the door hinges. so... back the subject line... am i cursed to have these problems? or am i just expecting too much from an M3? (two of them actually) i'd "expect" that the car would run for at least 3 months at a time without needing repairs. (and wouldn't it be cool if it went 2-3 years like a honda?) is 3 months of happy M3 driving without seeing my service advisors unreasonable? this car has only 32000 miles, and it's not ever going to see a track or any mods. (well... not many) what else can i do to own a car that runs for 3 months or more without needing repairs besides pray more or buy a non-M3? ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
