I had couple problems with the car, but the most major breakdown was water pump, and I think that's a common issue for this car. Other than that, slight problem with electronic windows, and panels rattle. I consider this normal. From what I've seen on BMWs, they tend to have many minor problems, especially on the electronics. More common on used ones. It's a good thing they handle well, otherwise there is no point in buying them. I think you need to be more careful when purchasing your car. On your second M3 purchase, sounds like the previous owner trashed the car pretty bad. That might be an explanation to all those problems. I don't think it's curse. If someone had cursed you, it would've been worse. :D Michael Ting --------------------

#2. Anyone here plays Racing games? - from Michael Ting

Since Autocross/Racing/Driving school tends to be a little costly, not everyone has the opportunity to participate in them. Instead, racing games are a nice and cheap alternative. :) I just started playing this game called "Sports Car GT" on PC. If you know Gran Turismo, this game is very familiar to that. You start with some $$, buy cars, upgrades, turbos, set up suspension, aerodynamics, etc. The difference is, this game focuses on GT cars, like 911, M3, Mustang, to McLaren F1, CLKGTR, Callaway Corvette, Panoz, etc. And you race on tracks like Lime Rock, Road Atlanta, etc. I think the gameplay is really nice. Graphics are nice, but not as good as the newer games out there. (My hardware is not up for the newer games anyway) Amazon.com is selling this for ~$13, and I'd really recommend it. The best part about this game is "driving" the PTG M3. :) Michael Ting --------------------

#3. Shark injector and Acceleration - from Paul Elliott

Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 23:08:07 -0400 From: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> Subject: Shark injector and Acceleration My friend just installed his new shark injector, and proceeded to borrow my Gtech/Pro for comparisons. Previously, with his ECIS intake and his AA exhaust, he had run a 0-60 best of 5.52 seconds, with his average of 'good runs' at around 5.6. Tonight, with his new Shark Injector, he ran a new best of 5.19, with several others beneath 5.3. I find this an outstanding improvement. I wonder how much of the 3/10 improvement can be attributed to the elimination of the third gear shift allowed by the software, and how much can be attributed to a better state of tune brought on by the software. I suppose the question is 'academic' in that an improvement is an improvement, however it is attained. Now, in comparison, my 5.00 best with my supercharger doesnt look that special any more, does it....Well, I have improved the intake a bit since that 5.00 time, and it Was over 80 degrees when I ran it, so perhaps that will become a 4.8something. But still, it looks like the diff between the shark injected car and the supercharged car may only be in the area of maybe 3/10s or so. I'm impressed!! _____________________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3; <20000 mi; Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger

Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 23:30:20 -0400 From: vernon@sprynet.com Subject: Alignment advice needed for A-Stock M3 Today my dealer found my right lower control arm is shot, which explains what I thought was a second badly warped left front rotor. The entire car needs an alignment, so while I have the opportunity to have them set it how I want it I'd like to ask what has worked well for some others. What settings have worked well (toes, etc.) for auto-x and track without really nasty tire wear? Even though I'm planning on some serious suspension mods next month, I still have lots of street driving and a few A-Stock events left before then. Thanks! Vern Anderson 98 M3/2

Roy I guess I'm just lucky. My VERY early '95 (5/94, one of the first 800 cars built) has had no problems since I bought it. Maybe they all got worked out in the first 20,000 miles... Of course, I'm not mentioning the little off-road excursion two miles from my house or the, um, minor repair that resulted from trying to change my own water pump... Chip M

You still getting rocks out from under that famous plastic piece? I have not had any problems out of either of my M3s(1997 and LTW) nor my girlfriends 1995 325. I tracked these cars and drove them everyday with the exception of the LTW. No AC in Georgia this time of the year will make you lose 20lbs. The only problems I ever had was after I sold the 1997 M3. The guy called me up and said the flywheel shattered. Wasn't my fault as he finally admitted to driving the piss out of the car. And then there was the time a bolt came out of my diff on the LTW and got spun around inside it. Made a weird noise while off the gas. Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2000 00:13:39 -0500 From: "Michael Ting" <lupin@purdue.edu> Subject: The E46 M3 engine I was surfing the web, then I came across the spec for Ferrari's F355. 375hp @ 8250 rpm from a 3.5L V8. Wow! So does that translates to ~9000 rpm REDLINE? Anyway, we all know Ferrari make nice fast cars. My point is, BMW should've build something like this for the E46 M3. I'm not saying that the new engine is bad, but it would've been better if we had that kind of output, at that Redline. With the same displacement, is there an advantage from the V8 to Inline-6? Would it be possible to build a I-6 3.5L with the same output and Redline? Maybe the E46 M3 Evo will be more similar to that. Michael Ting --------------------

Nope! HFM means Heat Film Meter. It's a heated wire, which gets cooled down from the intake air flow. If the temperature of the wire changes, the electrical resistance of that wire changes also . So, basically you can measure the amount of air that flows thru the HFM by detecting the electrical resistance of that wire. mill

M1 say, I have a question. When I was in france/italy couple of weeks ago I saw several Z1's. neat car. I like them. my question. since 1 was legally imported here, is it possible that I can import one of those? I'm not familiar with how to go about this. They are going for about ~20k on the used market in italy... btw, le mans was a blast. what an event. absolutely amazing. thousands of the strangest and coolest cars descend on ity bity little french towns. lotus elise's were more common than honda civics. badass cars. nice tvr's, ferrari's. the cars of people who went to the race almost overshadowed the race cars themselves (in my mind). it still seems so strange to me. I am driving around in the middle of the night through roads which wind like a maze through the french countryside. its pitch black and then your headlights illuminate a group of people that are walking along. you keep going and pretty soon you see another group or you may encounter another car which is wandering aimlessly just like you. And then you see a sign and an arrow and you follow it and find a couple of hundred cars all parked and people walking around and little stands selling beer, frites and other foods I can't pronounce. You look at your watch and its 3am and your just about to the mulsanne curve. Then the whole area is lit up briefly by headlights as a prototype car comes around the turn. followed by a ROAR of exhaust and its gone as fast as it came. a few seconds later and the phenomenon repeats. after a bit your get in your car and head off again in search of the white hot brake rotors...
