I know that on my dad's E38 740, the inside of the drain plug accepts an allen wrench (hex wrench). Not sure if it's the same design. Where did it snap and is there anything visible on the stuck piece? Chester --- "George M. Kofman" <sdg2@execpc.com> wrote: > Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 14:32:24 -0500 > From: "George M. My girlfriends 1995 325 and my Porsche do the same > thing. I am not sure what it is but once you start moving it blows colder > air. Anybody know what might cause this especially here in the south. Mine does that too! Starts blowing hot air at idle after working just fine for 1/2 an hour or more. Blows really cold air once you get moving. It is ~not~ very repeatable at all. It seems to do it on exceptionally hot days only. I have 2000 miles left on my extended warranty, my service advisor said that this was probably the AC computerized control unit starting to fail. He said there was no possible diagnostic to do on the control unit, just replace it. Thinking out loud, he considered a starting-to-fail compressor, but then dismissed it. I'd like to make sure they replace the right culprit in the next week or so. Does that sound right in others experience? The only other AC problem I've ever had is 'clogged expansion valve'...I know how to tell when you have that problem. It is gradual...then permanent DOA. This is something else. - Skip

Incidentally, the drain plug for the E39 and M3 is the same. I think BMW just doesn't use very large condensers and you need a lot of airflow (read: moving car) to get it to cool down. - Mark '95 M3 '97 528i 5-spd '88 M3, Hennarot ---- Mark Dadgar - Product Manager, Accessories (650) 230-5037 voice - (650) 230-2100 fax mdadgar@handspring.com - Handspring, Inc. If it isn't, then there isn't sufficient airflow through the heat exchanger when you're stopped, and your AC won't produce cold air. There is a resistor that controls the speed of the fan motor, and it can burn out, thus preventing the fan motor from operating. -rb >Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 14:59:47 EDT >From: Milotaks1@aol.com >Subject: Noisy A/C > > I stepped out of my car the other day while it was still on and >noticed the most horrific noise coming from the engine area. There is an electric fan, controlled by a thermostat, in front of our radiators which my service advisor told me only comes on when it is really hot outside. Mine was somehow destroyed; the hub and motor were there but not the blades. I was getting along w/o it in San Diego in the winter but thought I would replace it. Surprise!! it only come as a unit for about $800!!! Phil Thearle, a highly regarded body shop owner, gave me a blade and clip from a wreck so I should kiss his feet because they are almost never available in wrecking> It seems that everyone knows that they only come as a unit and they are the second thing to go in a front end hit so if a shop has a blade it is like an $800 part. I was told that the symptoms you are having was what I could expect on very hot days w/no booster-electric fan. Could you have a fault in the fan or thermo-switch?
