#1. RMS SC Dyno #s - from Leff, Larry

Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 10:18:44 -0400 From: "Leff, Larry" <lleff@Ajilon.com> Subject: RMS SC Dyno #s Gang - I also recently dynod my supercharged '95. I'm running RMS' Vortech kit with the 8lbs. Pulley. I'm still fine tuning the car, as I'm evidently not running the proper chip for this setup. RMS is in the process of shipping me another chip to add more fuel via the 28lbs fuel injectors to avoid the lean problem I'm having currently. Although I was expecting some higher numbers, I did have 305 rwhp @ approx. 6500 rpm. Max torque was 257 ft. lbs @ approx. 5300 rpm. - Larry Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 10:16:25 -0500 From: jon@aestechnology.com (Jon Massengale) Subject: 95 Dinan SC Dyno #'s I dyno'ed my 95M3 with a Dinan supercharger kit this morning. I bought the car a couple months ago with the kit already on it. Dyno also had the air/fuel analyzer probe. HP curve was a very smooth climb until 6100 @ 275HP when it dropped off about 10rwhp from 6200 to and then back up to 270HP at 6700 when the rev limiter kicked in. On the fuel ratio the mix went from 13.6 at 2500 and slowly got richer to 6100 then got very rich (11.5) and then went back to 11.9 at 6700. It is obvious that the rich condition starting at 6100 was the cause of the power drop, but now I wonder what caused it to go rich at 6100? By the look of the curve if it had not gone rich it would have gone to around 290rwhp. Maybe Dinan plays it conservative by keeping it rich under high boost? TQ peak was 241 @ 5500 but stayed above 200rwtq from 3600rpm and up. Jon Massengale 95M3 Austin, TX

One mistake in the article - they state that the model changes (e.g. 3.0 to 3.2l engine) were made after the 96 MY -> wrong, they were made after the 95 MY. Talks a bit about the history, how it is one of very few cars to hardly depreciate, and what to look out for if you're interested in one. A pretty cool read - I reccommend picking up a copy if you haven't already! Just thought i'd share. Gregg

If you'd been 2 seconds behind that viewblocker, you probably would have easily dodged that rock. (Or maybe not. I nailed a skunk a few months ago, with no other cars around. Perhaps I was outdriving my headlights. Perhaps I didn't brake hard enough. Perhaps I fixated on the target and steered into it. Perhaps I did everything right, but the skunk was suicidal and smarter than me. Any comments? (There was no impact on the passenger side and the > rock hit almost on the center-line.) And, if the ground clearance of the > splitter is lower than the rest of the underside, how did it escape? (Turning > left, weight shift right??) Sorry to hear about the damage, but I'm glad nobody was seriously hurt. I recently had an Inspection II done at the dealer. There's a service bulletin out to reduce the sensitivity of the side airbags. The service advisor said that one went off when someone hit a pothole. The sensors that determine whether someone is sitting in the passenger seat have also been a problem area on E36 cars. When the sensor goes, the system assumes that there's always a passenger. Given the fact that known airbag faults cause failures in the "safe" direction of excess airbag deployments, I think you're probably right that the airbag went off because the cable was cut, not because an impact was detected on the passenger side. But given the side airbag bulletin, who knows? As far as the splitter goes, imagine that the rock was shaped roughly like a sphere rather than a cube. The part of your car equal in height to the radius of the sphere would take the brunt of the blow, and then the rock would bounce away from your car, leaving your splitter intact. -- David Ripton dripton@wizard.net

I agree that its pretty close to the advertised #s and is not bad. I don't know exactly what the car should make as it has some additional mods-Triflow exhaust, Big bore TGB, hydraulic lifters. If you could see the graph where the power drops sharply at the exact moment the mix goes very rich. It looks like its gets way too rich. The last supercharged car I had (Corvette) was running too rich and after driving it for 6 months I dynoed it and with a turn of a screw on the fuel pressure regulator I picked up 80lb/ft! I realize that this is different becuase it involves such a small protion of the rpm band (6100-6600) but I think I'm losing around 15-20rwhp by the look of the graph. I thought about the ducting but have not looked closely at it yet. The dyno room is enclosed and air conditioned to 75 degrees with vent tubes for the exhaust. Also got the clear lights installed all around. Oh my God, I should have bought these lights sooner. They looked great! Oh yeah, the SI, first thing I noticed was the redline: now it's possible to hit 7000RPM in 3rd gear (!!) Also it seemed smoother to drive: when in gear going past 2000RPM, fuel cutoff doesn't jerk the car as much. It also *SEEMS* to be pulling a bit stronger between 3000-5000RPM at fwy speed. Although that has zero scientific bearings whatsoever, just gut feelings. I plan to get it (the car) dyno'd when I get a chance (& when I convince myself to spend more $$$). Idling wasn't any smoother than before (I wasn't expecting it to be diff), nor does it idle at a higher (or lower) RPM. Engine doesn't REALLY sound different, as far as I could tell. But, all in all, I'm happy, having the speed limiter removed has to be good right? But again, will get it dyno'd one of these days (nice that the SI can go back & forth eh?) and will report back. The SI use was pretty user friendly. Althought I had to drive to a friend's house to use his (or rather, his neighbor's) batt charger. Phil 99 Estoril M3/2, x, ss, sharked
