Maybe I am completely spoiled, but most times I don't even pay to have tires mounted at the shop that takes care of my race car. And when I do, it is FAR FAR less than $125. I don't know what I'd do if I had to do that! Maybe I just get a good deal because between taking care of my race car, my street car, and my dad's race car, my mechanic gets his fair share anyway. <g> I figure I go through tires every two-three track events...that would be $125 a month just to have tires rebalanced, even more if I had a race because that usually means two sets mounted. Thats $1500 a year minimum just to have tires mounted! I can't imagine charging that much to mount tires. My mechanic can mount and balance one in less than 10 minutes, thats only about 30 minutes of work for a full set. Thats freakin $250/hour. -Bryan Watts 95 M3 92 325is, K-Prepared

They wouldn't happen to be Pirellis would they? In general there seems to be no way to predict it - with the obvious exception that in my case that every Pirelli tire that I have owned has eventually caused this problem (among others). Its only been three sets so its hardly a statistically valid sample size but it's certainly good enough correlation to cause me to avoid the brand. In my experience the tires develop a scalloped wear pattern on the inside edges after about 10-12K miles. New tires in all cases has solved the problem for me (with no other changes - alignment or otherwise). In my case, Yokohama's and Dunlops worked well with no similar problems. Note: In case its not obvious, this problem seems far more prevalent with very low profile tires and lowered suspensions with increased negative camber (i.e. most M3s). If you know a good tech/foreman at these dealers, please let me know. Elmhurst - Westlake Motors ? Westmont - Laurel Motors ? In my previous dealer experiences at Erhardt (Detroit 'burb), I was always given a new 3 or 5 Series while my car was in for service. Should I expect the same from these local dealers ? ===== Mit freundlichen Grüßen, Best regards, Bob Stoll 98M34 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get Yahoo! Tell them I sent you. They'll probably do anything to avoid having me come and chew them out if they treat you bad :) Seriously. I had some voluntary paint work done after buying a very base model 325i in '95. Not warranty or damage or anything. I just wanted the black lower body trim etc. painted to match the rest of the car. Total of $400 in work. When I took it in and asked the sales guy if it was possible to get the courtesy van to take me to the train he said "No way." I didn't know what to think. But he (David Benck, Fleet Sales Manager) said "Here, take my demo car." I reminded him that the car would be in the shop for 4 days over a weekend and he said it was no problem. After *5* days and almost 1000 commuting miles to my accounts around Chicago and Wisconsin I brought the car back. I told him how many miles I put on it and he just grinned and said "Aren't the new 328's great?" That's the kind of treatment I always got. Once I took the car in for an oil change and one of the valets stole 4 quarters out of the coin holder while washing it. I told David about it and he called a meeting with me, the service manager and the sales manager. I told them what happened and the sales manager just said "I apologize." and handed me a dollar out of his wallet. I never paid for an oil change there again. They were free. I didn't ask for it. They always just said "Courtesy" on the receipts after that. That valet was never there after that either. You can do a lot worse than Knauz as far as I'm concerned. And I'm a demanding SOB to please. I found them because they're the local IFG dealer, and John is super careful with my car. He sells accessories (won't say "rice" <g>) cuz it puts food on the table but really wants more BMWs, especially us track junkies; he used to have a Bavaria and misses it. Even the first time I came in, he only charged $25/wheel for mounting and balancing. Tell him I sent you. http://www.modacar.com When I couldn't come in right away for my Kumhos, John put them in the showroom to show the kids what cars wear when it's not just for show. :) Everytime I stop by, he makes a big deal out of talking road racing and tells the other customers, "She _races_ her car". He owns a '97, I think it's stock. I know last time my car was there he test drove when complete and was impressed with the mods. Hey Everyone, The warranty is running out on my 1996 M3, and I was wondering what I should have the dealer check before it expires. I thought I had saved an email about this before, but can't seem to find it, sorry for the re-post. Also, does anyone have any opinions about Warranty Gold extended warranties? FYI, my car has 43,000 miles and has a MechTech Turbo Kit. Anyway, thanks for any input. Tony

I've been very happy with the $1800 3yr/100kmi Warranty Gold Diamond policy on my '95. Within the first few weeks they paid for an $850 timing chain tensioner, and I just got a new $1100 head gasket - paid for itself in 14 months. My only complaint is that they wouldn't do a $150 preventative water pump replacement, and I didn't want to wait for catastrophic failure so replaced it myself.
