I own an original Z3 (4 cylinder, second month of production) and drive the snot out of it. So makes it a sports car, right? And it has only 2 seats and a soft top. I think everyone has missed BMW's current true sports car line, the M Roadster, M Coupe, and the various flavors of regular Z3s available now. If the 507 was a sports car, then the Z3 (and Z1, M1, and new Z8) certainly falls into that category. #5. M3 is a sports sedan - from david tow

Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 17:25:39 PDT From: "david tow" <david_tow@hotmail.com> Subject: M3 is a sports sedan Al, You could call it a coupe if you want. But the legendary BMW 2002 has been famous for being "the sports sedan that acts like a sports car and is practical like a sedan". If you take out some old dusty magazines that featured the car, 9 of 10 times it was mentioned as a sports sedan. Now keep in mind that the 2002 is a 2-door car. I guess a sedan has a more usable backseat, whereas a coupe has a thing back there that looks like a seat. Just my opinion... #7. Front suspension (driver's side) rattle - from Ed Tang

Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 18:24:13 -0700 (PDT) From: Ed Tang <etangf1@yahoo.com> Subject: Front suspension (driver's side) rattle Hi all, I have to bring the car in for a rattle in the front suspension. Sounds like it comes from the tower. The sound happens when I accelerate or brake as the weight transfer shifts through the car. It is louder over the bumps. I've checked the wheel for play in the bearings but it's tight as a drum. When I rock the car, the sound emanates close to the shock tower. Could it be the bump stops or the strut housing? I want to hear it from the group before I get a response from the service dept. TIA. Ed Tang 95 Cosmos M3 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get Yahoo! Interestingly, the internet quotes that I got from the same company were about $300 higher for a '98 model with theoretically more of the factory warranty still left. I have seen significant hints of "this subject has been thoroughly covered before don't start it again" but I for one wasn't on the list at that time. And yes I have tried searching the archives but with no luck. Searching for "warranty" yields hundreds of hits with all of them appearing to have nothing to do with the actual discussion. More specific searches (warranty gold or warranty direct) came up empty. I would be grateful to hear what others' experiences have been or for someone to clue me in to the dates that I could browse the archives to find the pertinent discussion. Also note that I normally wouldn't even consider purchasing an extended warranty (from BMW or anybody else) since they are clearly set up to make plenty of money. I figure if I avoid them, in the long run statically I will come out ahead paying for my own repairs. I still believe this is true unless you happen to be cursed with Sean's luck. However, hearing of all the potential M3 problems from this list has me thinking that I may now own more of a money pit than any of my previous BMWs (and I have owned some up to 200K miles with no major repairs). #10. Rattlin and cracklin from exhuast... - from Andy Korczynski

Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 00:24:40 -0500 From: Andy Korczynski <Andy@casskor.com> Subject: Rattlin and cracklin from exhuast... I have an AA exhuast with about 8 k miles on my 99 M3 and when the car is cold it has started to make an awful cracklin noise at even the slightest touch of the accelerator. In fact its getting to the point where it occurs under heavy throttle even when the car is warm. I haven't gotten my butt under the car yet, but was wondering if anyone has experienced this. I'm guessing that maybe the flange on the connection point of the exhuast is loose and it's making the noise. Once the car warms up a bit and the stuff expands the fit is a bit tighter and the noise goes away??? Just put in my order for an injector today from Eurosport. Jim C.: Will I have it when I come back from vacation in two weeks??? Thanks! Andy K.
