He wrote... >(the rear KONIs are alot harder to adjust then the fronts, >requiring removal of the shock instead of turning a handy knob) Actually, this is not true of all KONI rears -- some KONI models (like the 82/86 series double-adjustables) come with externally adjustable rebound and compression adjustments. And even the single-adjustable kind you describe can usually be converted by KONI in Kentucky, TrueChoice in Ohio, or the KONI Rebuild Center in Southern California. --BT

Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 21:26:59 -0500 From: "Steven Hazard" <98m3@mediaone.net> Subject: Double Adj means lots of fun..... Sean posted.... "i could easily adjust my car for less understeer/more oversteer by just adjusting the fronts. and if wasn't lazy i could have adjusted the rears as well to gain even more control. (the rear KONIs are alot harder to adjust then the fronts, requiring removal of the shock instead of turning a handy knob)" Sean is referring to Single Adj Koni's.... Double Adj Koni's both front and rear do not require removal from the car. Yes they're damn expensive. And yes they're worth every damn cent.....Sean is right... front rebound does does reduce understeer, but Sean increasing bump in the rear really makes a difference :-) All it takes is a flathead screwdriver..... That along with some properly balanced spring rates makes the M3 a real nice toy to play with.... I've been a Koni aftermarket buyer for 15 years now. Did'nt want to break the streak yet...... ProParts has some wonderful suspension kits available for the M3................... Regards, Steve

#5. Re: V8 in E46 M3 - from Paul England

Date: Wed, 2 Aug 2000 00:36:23 -0400 From: "Paul England" <ettsn@mindspring.com> Subject: Re: V8 in E46 M3 Actually, Audi has a variant of their 4.2l V8 from the A8 in the TT racecar. The new DTM rules specify V8 power. They also only allow rear wheel drive. So instead of being a 1.8T Quattro, it's a 4.0l V8 RWD TT. I understand that BMW missed the inspection deadline, so they plan to wait until next year if at all. They are pouring all their resources into F1 (trying to catch McLaren/Mercedes and Ferrari) and LMP (trying to catch the Audis). If they do go into DTM, it will be with the S62 motor. The S52 is in your E36 M3 (unless you have a 95--S50). All the V8s in DTM now have an upper limit of 4.0l and they have to last the whole season. For real. So these guys take it easy. The rationale is it will keep the teams from exploiting the razor's edge of performance for reliability's sake, and thus make DTM more competitive at a lower overall cost. They also have air restrictors that limit BHP to about 450 or so. Here's MB's take: http://www.autoweb.com.au/start_/showall_/id_MER/doc_mer9911081/article.html Will we see BMW in DTM? Prolly. This year? Prolly not. -Paul PS- The comment about the E30 cars doing more with a smaller engine was hooey too. All DTM cars had 2.3 4cyls in 87-88 and moved up to 2.5 in 89. Ever see an MB 190e 2.3-16? Audi did have some 2.0 turbo cars that were AWD, but suffered serious weight penalties (Quattro S2 Evolution) and were saddled with more every time they took a win. > From: "Roy Kao" <bimmerphile@hotmail.com> > Subject: E46 M3 and DTM > > I think BMW can in fact race the new M3 with a V8, likely the S52(?) motor > from the new M5. #7. OT: be nice to motorcyclists - from jay

Date: Tue, 01 Aug 2000 23:40:07 -1000 From: jay <jguzman@hawaii.edu> Subject: OT: be nice to motorcyclists hi everyone...sorry for the OT post, but i had to vent...i acquired a 94 kawasaki ex500 motorcycle on saturday...the only motorcycle experience i had gotten was the training at the Motorcycle Safety Foundation classes...i had to go thru the hassle of obtaining insurance, registration, and safety inspection...usually, its no big deal but there was a tropical storm headed for hawaii and i wanted to get everything over with...i wanted to get the safety check early on, before the rain came down, so i left the bike at a dealer to do it...after waiting at the satellite city hall for almost an hour (end of the month, everyone was paying their car registration), it started to pour...so i was going at a steady pace (30 in a 30), and this jerk in an MPV tails me...i flash my brake lights and leave lots of space between me and the car in front...he continues to tail me...when i pull into the left most lane to make a left turn, this guy honks his horn at me!!! i honk back and restrained from flipping him one...so after all my paperwork was in check, i had to ride home in the rain...going 35 in a 45 and all these cars pass me and cut me off...but i made it home safely without crashing...what a day for my first time riding a motorcycle on public streets...so PLEEZE, if you see a biker on the road, dont assume he/she is comfortable riding and allow the rider LOTS of room...if you pass him, make sure there's lots of room between the two of you before you merge back...that person may just love BMWs as much as you do... PS>> those BMW R1100S (i think it was an S, anyway the sportbike-looking ones) sure are nice...hopefully i can get me one one day...
