As I recall, If you turn the top clockwise it gets stiffer. You will be able to tell if it's getting stiffer or softer by seeing how quickly the shock rebounds when you let it go. There may be a bump stop in the top of the shock that must be removed before it can be fully compressed. I had these shocks on my 944 turbo and they had the stops; I don't know about the M3. I tried a lot of different adjustment ranges and found that the middle was best. Full stiff was _really_ stifff for the stock suspension (it felt like the springs took forever to rebound..not good). Not a group purchase, but definitely group participation! I need a few data points on stock ride height as measured from the center of the wheels straight up to the fender arch (front and rear). It's been a long time since my car was stock and I never measured it then anyway. Today I removed the lowering springs that were on the car and installed a coil over kit. I know how much change I got from that, but don't know how it relates to stock. I'd like a baseline to work from to determine the total drop in order to have an idea about total suspension travel and general suspension geometry questions. A few random samples should be enough to give me good data. Prefer English units, nearest 1/8th inch is accurate enough - use the tape measure not the vernier caliper. No rush, first thing in the morning will be fine. <g> There _are_ a few stock M3s on this list... right? I think you will find this same rule on most mailing lists. Not too long ago, I orchestrated a GP of Lincoln Floor Jacks. I asked permission from Suzy first (and Rob Levinson of the UUC digest) and they both provided some comments and guidelines and then gave me permission. I kept the vendor anonymous only to avoid these types of problems. I believe overall it went very smoothly. In the end, I believe 25 floor jacks were purchased and the vendor was very pleased as were most people who bought the jacks. If done right, these GP's can go smoothly, you just have to abide by the list mistresses guidelines. Seems reasonable. Best regards, Rich

Another data point for those out there setting up coil-overs (not that what I did is correct, but FWIW): The Ground Control coil-overs I installed have a total of 10 full turns from top to bottom. As a starting point, we set all four corners at 5 turns (right in the middle) and installed everything. We ended up with an almost prefect setup (sometimes luck smiles on you :) The ride height drop was almost even all around (makes sense), but the corner weights were also reasonable right out of the gate. I didn't want to lower the car too much as it is still a daily driver and here in Pittsburgh there are bad roads, steep driveways, high curbs - not friendly for a really low car. Setting the coil-overs right in the middle gave me just about what I wanted - 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 drop all around: LF 14 7/16 down to 13 1/4 (1 3/16 drop) RF 14 1/4 13 (1 1/4) LR 13 3/16 12 (1 3/16) RR 13 1/8 12 (1 1/8) As far as the corner weights go, we were not able to get everything perfect (I'm installing a roll bar next month, so that will throw everything off anyway). The I6 leans over to the passengers front side of the car (from what I'm told and from a visual inspection) and even with the battery in the right rear, it is difficult to get a lot of weight back there without throwing the ride height completely off (again, from what I've been told). We still may try to tweak the roll-bar-less setup a little next week to try to get it closer but I couldn't get more than: LF=828 RF=820 LR=844 RR=776 Front=1648 (50.4%) Rear=1620 (49.6%) LF/RR=1604 (49.1%) LR/RF=1664 (51.9%) Sorry for the data dump, but if anyone has suggestions or past experience, throw 'em at me.
