#6. re: Metal Thermostat Housing - from drwillb

I just did my water pump, belts, thermostat, and thermostat housing. All parts were sourced from Steve at very good prices: pump-- dealer $110, Steve $50; housing $40. The housing had the rubber gasket around one of the ports but no paper gasket around the perimeter, same as the plastic one. My 3/95 had the plastic pump impeler which did not disintegrate but stopped moving enough water to keep the car at normal temp. Mileage 49,980. The thing quit right on schedule. It was no fun driving around in 90 degree weather with the heat on full. This kept the car from overheating and the needle never went past the 2/3 mark. As far as the install is concerned: 1. Forget about holding the pulley steady while you crank on the 32mm wrench. Just whack on the wrench (impact style)to loosen the nut holding the fan on. Remember this is a reverse thread, clockwise to loosen. 2. The belt tensioners apply ALOT of tension. Unless you're a gorilla, use a long breaker bar or an extension on a socket wrench handle. 18" at least. 3. There isn't much working room behing the radiator and the 2 lower screws on the thermostat housing are a completely blind job. 4. I now undestand why the dealer wanted to charge 3.5 hr labor for the job. $425 including parts. Regards, Bill Molina 95 M3 running cool again 88 M3 getting Turner J-stock suspension 90 U.
