#1. timing chain tensioner problem? - from jbergstrom
Top
Date: Tue, 8 Aug 2000 12:14:24 -0500 From: "jbergstrom" <john@intellectsys.com> Subject: timing chain tensioner problem? I've got a mechanic looking at my '95 M3 right now, checking on a engine problem that is causing a low power situation. The problem may be with "the tensioner that keeps the timing chain between the intake cam and the exhaust cam tight". The mechanic is not 100% sure, and currently is checking with some other M3 mechanics to see if any have seen this problem. Anyone heard or seen this? Thanks in advance . . . John '95 M3

(i still have engine knocking) what do you do to fix engine knocking? 92 octane is the best i can get around seattle. maybe i need to use racing fuel? what else is there to try? outcome #2. (no knocking with stock chip) so... what does that mean? i know that chips are for "normal" engines and that would make mine "not normal" for some reason. which is it? this engine is such a piece of sh*t that it can't deal with a jim c chip? or is it just "too good" for the regular chip and i need one that's "even better"? thanks for the answers! ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Noted Tire Rack (www.tirerack.com) had the 235/40/17 MXX3 for $199. Pretty solid price!. Regards, Rich

Not that it may answer your questions, but the knocking you seem to experience under hard acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gears is the same kind of knocking I've been experiencing from the moment I bought the car (14k) up until now (93K). I have the impression that maybe the Dinan chip I installed might of accentuated the problem, but I could be wrong. Either way, it was doing it before. Changing gas or going over 92 octane doesn't have any effect on the problem (if indeed it is a problem). Maybe it's the batch of gas you get, not the brand. My car will knock with any gas, and it will also not knock with any gas. Actually, what seems to have an effect is the weather. My car will rarely "knock, knock" at night. At noon, it's a different story. Sometimes, it doesn't knock at all for days. I'm telling ya, it's just too weird... I've posted Emails to this list, I've been to numerous dealerships seeking help in this matter and I've always been told not to worry about it. Well, after 73K of hard driving, I haven't had any mechanical failures whatsoever (knock on wood). I've learned to live with it. And when the car, well, just feels like knocking (you know, that time of the month) then I just go easy on the pedal for a day or two... ;) I'm very interested though in what you might learn about this problem. Date: Tue, 8 Aug 2000 15:41:48 EDT From: Brent91NSX@aol.com Subject: M3 Vs. C5 Vette Ok, just outta curiosity, I have a 95 M3 w/ Dinan High Flow airbox and Jim conforti chip. Thats it, bone stock other than that. Just curious, who would win between a C5 vette (automatic) and the M3. I think the vette would win. I have raced a friends 93 vette (auto) and beat it pretty bad (several car lengths) but curious about the new one. 0-60 or freeway races. Any comments/stories please email me. Thanks, Brent Parks 95 M3 with an ego

C5 Vette I don't know about a Vette, but if it's anywhere in the twin turbo Supra league, and according to magazine reviews it is, then it's a losing proposition. I got smoked so badly by my friend's TT Supra in acceleration the other day, that it reminded me of a Doberman toying with a Chihuahua. He'd come from behind and zoom right past me, or he'd leave me in the dust whenever he wanted. One of the most humbling experiences I've ever had the pleasure to go through... And a true wake up call. I don't think my car is particularly slow, but it really is like night and day. No comparison. Now, a good pilot and a twisty road can make up for that deficit in no time... But, then again, that's the same excuse Honda Civics use against us. Enjoy the M3 for what it's worth, but trying to justify the $45k asking price of a new M3 based on 0-60 times and acceleration performance is a loosing argument IMHO. At least, the Supra is more expensive though... ;) -----Original Message----- From: Brent91NSX@aol.com [mailto:Brent91NSX@aol.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 08, 2000 12:48 PM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] M3 Vs. Date: Tue, 8 Aug 2000 15:27:26 -0500 From: "Michael Ting" <lupin@purdue.edu> Subject: Re: [E36M3] M3 Vs. C5 Vette The C5 has a 5 sec 0-60. Chevy claims that the new Z06 will hit 0-60 in 4 secs flat. The M3 3 liter has a 0-60 of 6 seconds. I don't know how bad the automatic slows down C5's time, but I'm guessing it's close to 5.5 secs for 0-60. The most that the airbox and chip will do is reduce 0-60 time by 0.1 secs. Which translates to 5.9 secs, for the M3 (assuming perfect shift), and 5.5 secs for C5 auto. So, it looks like the M3 will lose in 0-60. As for 60 and above, the C5 will definitely win. Automatic transmission doesn't make a big difference once the car is rolling. Plus the C5 has much bigger HP/engine with about the same weight. As for handling, the C5 should easily beat the M3 too.
