Date: Tue, 8 Aug 2000 19:20:09 -0400 From: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> Subject: M3 Audio / MBQuart Speakers? Peter, >Also, if others have a killer system that makes use of the stock head unit/cd changer, I'd love to hear the specs < Its up to you, but I would ask why on earth do you want to keep your stock head unit?? Let me just say that I've read countless posts from guys who wanted to keep their head unit, either because they heard its not so bad, or because it would involve too much money since they also would have to change out their cd changer tomatch a new head unit. Invariably, after replacing speakers, they feel that it sounds a little better, but not much..But when they get a new head unit, Wow, what a difference they report! Based on anecdotal evidence like this, I replaced my head unit with a Kenwood Excelon unit and, later, a matching cd changer. I too report Wow, what a huge difference in sound quality it makes. It sounds so good, as a matter of fact, I may well forgo the other sound upgrades. Do yourself a favor, and dont rule out a new HU this early in the game...I dont think you'll be happy with your other upgrades unless you do the HU first. _____________________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3; <20000 mi; Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift Kit and clutch stop; Skaags pedals

Hi John, Yes, the CD changer IS in the trunk, and its on the driver side of center near the trunk opening. Why do you ask? Would this explain in some way why I hear a hi whine only when the Radio is playing? _____________________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3; <20000 mi; Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift Kit and clutch stop; Skaags pedals -----Original Message----- From: John Firestone <john.firestone@nord-com.net> To: Paul Elliott <pelliott@rcn.com> Cc: e36m3@bmwmpower.com <e36m3@bmwmpower.com> Date: Tuesday, August 08, 2000 12:03 PM Subject: Re: radio high pitched whine? >Hi Paul, > >> After the head unit, the improvement was huge...It really sounded good, and >> made me realize how really poor the stock head unit is. #3. knock knock... - from Joe Huie

Date: Tue, 8 Aug 2000 16:53:49 -0700 From: "Joe Huie" <jhuie@inreach.com> Subject: knock knock... Just another data point. My 95 M3 also knocks with the JC chip, usually during hard acceleration in 2nd or 3rd gear. Per my previous email with JC, the factory knock sensors occasionally will not be able to compensate for the advanced ignition and timing curves of the JC chip. This happens to me in all kinds of weather, cool or warm, running 92 octane in the SF Bay Area. Only thing you can do is just back off the gas a little until the knocking goes away. It doesn't happen too often, but it's definitely there. If it does, there's probably a ground loop. You're best solution is to run a heavy gauge ground cable from the radio to a solid ground connection. Do the same for the changer. Slightly noisier, not really noticable on the butt dyno (maybe 1 hp). Don't remove the second leading into the HFM. That's suppose to be a venturi which helps increase the flow of air into the engine. #6. seat belt sensor - from russell

Date: Tue, 8 Aug 2000 17:41:36 -0700 (PDT) From: russell <driver8m3@yahoo.com> Subject: seat belt sensor i solved the seat belt sensor problem by taking the fuse out and putting it back in....didnt need a new one, as the old one was still fine. easy fix in case this happens to anyone else. (the problem was that the seat belt sensor would always beep when the door was open, regardless of whether the key was in the ignition or not). russell dakar '99 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? #7. Blasphemy? - from Wentz, Don

Date: Tue, 8 Aug 2000 19:15:03 -0700 From: "Wentz, Don" <don.wentz@intel.com> Subject: Blasphemy? OK, this is a goofy question, but why not? At the Heartland Park event a couple of weeks ago my wife was admiring the checkered flag 'striping' on Russ Wiles' M3 LTW. She commented how good that would look on my 95 Dakar Yellow M3. I have to admit that I agree with her and had thought the same thing. So, how bad would it be to put the LTW flags on a non-LTW car? Just ask since I would hate to be 'shamed' off the list ;-). BTW, any of you make the Topeka event? We had a great time there. dw

A while ago when I performed my audio upgrade, I wanted to keep the stock head unit as well. My primary reason was to save money and to maintain the stock look and feel (plus, it wouldn't scream, "Steal me" in the street of NYC). I remember someone had e-mailed me privately and told me to buy an aftermarket head unit...trying to use the stock unit would leave me disappointed....he even bet me a beer. In the end, I broke down and bought a Nak MB-75 because I felt that it matched the E36 interior extremely well. The system sounded good, but I still had some work to do. In the process, I reinstalled the stock unit because I really wanted the stock look. Keep in mind that I had already replaced the amp and speakers. I turned on the head unit and played a piano concerto. Man, it sucked! The high notes of the piano were clipped and the lows were muddled. I immediately ripped it out and reinstalled my MB-75. BTW, Stephen Ladredo, Jim El Nabli, and Dave Ngo had a chance to listen to my setup over the weekend. After Jim helped me tune the crossover points, he said he liked it (so Stephen, it sounds even better now!) and was impressed. Pretty cool!
