#2. Aftermarket Stereo Question - from Ron Buchalski

Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 04:44:56 GMT From: "Ron Buchalski" <rbuchals@hotmail.com> Subject: Aftermarket Stereo Question I have an Alpine in-dash CD that I removed from another car. I am thinking about installing it in either my M3 or my 525iT (both cars currently have the same in-dash cassette radio). I have the wire harness and antenna adapter cables so that the Alpine can plug right into the car's existing wiring system. The question is, can the stock radio be swapped for the aftermarket radio, or will there be an incompatibility between the aftermarket radio and the factory amp? The Alpine is a "high output" system. Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 07:19:00 -0600 From: stu burness <burness@unm.edu> Subject: Re: Range OK, caveat up front -- I don't know -- just guessing (hypothesizing), but -- every BMW I've owned did this (97 Z3, 98 M3/4 which grew up into a 540i/6). Problem was worst in the Z3, minor in the 540i. I would guess that the range function is determined simultaneously by interaction of the MPG function (lagged driving habits) and the fuel gage. The latter, estimating remaining fuel, is measured by the level of a float level in the tank (my GMC PU reads high when accelerating, low when braking => float is in the rear of the tank on this one -- BMWs appear not to be susceptable to this phenomenon). The problem arises from the fact (again a guess) that the fuel sensor is linear with heigth of remaining fuel. But the tank is not perfectly rectangular form side views so the heigth-volume realtionship is only approximate. Thus (my guess is that) the range function is non-linear and thus inaccuate at high and low fuel levels. Not too noticeable at high levels (may just be perception, as who worries about having too MUCH fuel?) but carefully watched at low levels (which can cause one to sweat cuz you CAN run out of fuel, or it costs $$ to fill up, or if nothing else, it means you have to stop having fun in your Bimmer long enough to refuel<g>). So this is not a built in error (like the BMW speedo reading -- dumb -- like setting your watch 10 minutes fast so you'll never be late -- the mind justs readjusts), but unavoidable w/o going to something like a fuel gauge based of fuel weight -- wonder how long THAT sensor would last? Bottom line (for me) is I watch the odometer -- I know about how many miles I can get out of a tank. Driving habits (for me) are roughly constant over a tank, but speed limits (road type and traffic <g>) may vary, so I use the MPG readout to mentally fine tune. Works OK for me, but the first time I watched that range function on the Z3 click off miles almost twice as fast as the odometer from about range = 90 on down, I was in the middle of nowhere and sweating. Related to all this is an occuernce from 20+ years ago. My brother and I and my 8 year old son hide been out dirtbike riding. Came back, unloaded the truck, and whilst my brother and I sat on the patio drinking a cool one and bench racing, my son had to ride some more (ain't it always that way!). So he took off (back then you could ride almost anyplace around here -- sigh). Twenty minutes later we see him pushing his KX 80 up the ditch road -- ran out of gas! It was 100 degrees and he still had on full riding gear. Apparently didn't know it was OK to remove his helmet in those circumstances. We sat there and looked at each other. I resisted the temptation to go help him push that thing the last 1/4 mile back in. Poor little guy. My brother says, "Bet that'll never happen again". It didn't. Disclaimer: I am not an engineer or an auto mechanic (sigh!), so I don't know what I'm talking about. Just a dude with too little to do this am and too much time to do it in. But it makes sense to me. I'm also not an attorney or a politician (whew!). (That will surely draw some flames on THIS list please respond privately.<g>) In all contriteness, I'll admit that as an economist some may rank me even lower. But who cares? I'll just go for a drive! Stu (no cell phone) Corrales, NM

Thomas, I have had Dent Wizards take care of dent when I picked up my car. They did not botch up or damage anything..... > In my case it may be a bit more difficult. I need to have the Dent Wizzards remove a couple of door dings that I inherited when I bought the car. I plan to remove the panels > before I take the car to them. Otherwise, they > might botch up the door panels or drill holes in the door jam area. To Remove Door Panel (From Bentley....buy a Bentley its worth it) 1) Cars with Side-Impact airbags, disconnect negative battery cable 2) Carefully pry out mirror adjustment switch and disconect harness connector from switch 3) Unscrew door locking knob 4) Pry off trim cover for inside door handle. Pry off concealing plugs from armest. Remove door panel retaining screws (just behind handle under plastic tabs) 5) Unclip door panel from door perimeter (Little plastic thingies.... just pull hard... they do have a tendency to crack, they have the same ones on '02s, the original '02 clips did not crack as often..) 6) Disconnect radio speaker harness connector. 7) Installation is reverse of removal (shades of a Haynes Manual here) -replace any damaged plastic parts or clips -renew vapor barrier if it is damaged (duct tape works) -use new mounting bolts when reinstalling the side impact airbag to the door (where applicable) -when installing door panel, align metal retainers on window sill with openings on top of door panel -check door lock mechanism and window for ease of movement -If battery was disconected, you need to re-initalize window regulator motors (see below). To reinitalize window: 1) close door and turn ignition key on. fully open front window 2) fully close front window 3) hold window button in up position for at least 5 seconds after window is closed 4) repeat for other window 5) windows should now be ok and one-touch should work -Justin -- '76 02 (Whimsical) '97 M3 (Orion) BMW CCA#77056 check out http://users.vei.net/jgerry

Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 08:41:40 -0600 From: stu burness <burness@unm.edu> Subject: Re: Range -- addendum Oops! I forgot (I forget a lot anymore) to add to my last post: More speculation. It seems that the fuel gauge drops faster when the tank is full and when it's almost empty, right? Since RANGE = MPG X REMAINING FUEL, I suspect that if the fuel gauge were as accurately calibrated as the range function, the fuel guage would show anomalies similar to those of the range display. With constant driving habits I'd bet the fuel gauge, appropriately calibrated, would exactly track the range function. That's why as the tank approaches depletion, instead of racing to wherever the next gas station may be, I put it in 6th <g> and cruise on in. Moral of the story is: Things are always are what they are, they just may not seem that way. (I think there's a better way to say that) Stu (with lots of gas --oops! 'Scuse me!) Corrales, NM
