#1. Too little or too much gas - Was Range - from LoweSeaton@aol.com

Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 01:01:52 EDT From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Too little or too much gas - Was Range Ken writes: > DO not run dry!! The gas is also the lubricant/coolant for the fuel > pump. Running out or even very low causes damage and leads to > early failure. <g> I wondered if anybody would scold me. I agree, I don't recommend running out of gas but I like to push the envelop. We would have to look inside the tank. I would not be surprised to find the fuel pump is in a well and the intake for the fuel line is above the fuel pump. Therefore, the fuel pump is never dry? I would not be surprised if fuel tanks have a sediment trap for crud that eventually gets into a gas tank. But however you slice it, it probably is not good to run very low. And while we are on the subject <g> I have heard that you should not top off your tank and try to put every last drop into the tank. Supposedly this contaminates the charcoal filter on the tank. I once got 410 miles on a tank. Guess how I did it? Yep! I topped off the tank. Had gas clear up to the gas cap and ran it down to the blinking dashes. I'm bad. ;-) Lowell Seaton '95 M3/2 Dallas, TX BMW CCA #131505

#2.US Spec HID retrofit pictures! - from Chester Wong
Top
Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 22:52:47 -0700 (PDT) From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> Subject: <E36> US Spec HID retrofit pictures! I finally snapped a few pics tonight. The only problem I see is that the HID lamp was aimed a little lower than the halogen one. If the halogen lamp was aimed at the same height, the floor might have been better illuminated. If there is a huge demand for more accurate pictures (where they are aimed at the same height), then I'll see what I can do. Ok, so here's the scoop: I modified the passenger side US housing to accept the Ford HID bulb. I pretty much followed Ben Liaw's writeup, but I didn't use the o-ring. The problem I saw was that the o-ring was too thick and would end up pushing the bulb further back into the reflector. These reflectors are a bit sensitive to the location of the point source and if you examine the HB4 halogen bulb with the Ford HID bulb, you'll see that the point source is about the same distance from the base of the bulb for both. So instead of the o-ring, I squished some clear silicone sealant and then sandwiced the bulb with cap head screws. The left US housing is still stock. Keep in mind that the euro lamps are currently installed in my car so these pictures were taken with the lamp assembly sitting on a box (hence, the varying levels). They were powered by a portable 12V battery so some might argue that the halogen would have been brighter had it been connected to a car with the alternator going. Ok, enough talk...here's the link: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=838931&a=6713718 The last four pictures are it. Based on actually seeing them perform, I have no qualms about the beam pattern with the US spec housings with the Ford HID bulbs. Proper bulb placement is crucial and if you don't get it right, you might start seeing horse shoes in front of you. The pattern thrown by my modified housings is very even and broad. The hot spot that I thought was a result of the HID bulb was actually present with the stock HB4 bulb. Go figure. Thanks for the bandwidth. Chester BTW, my offer still stands. I really have no use for the US spec headlamps since I will be retrofitting my euro lamps with HID lights as well. This was just an exercise in fun and a good way to kill some time. I would like a set of unmodified US housings just in case I ever run into state inspection problems and have to put them back on. I bought the parts for a little over $460. I would be willing to take a trade for my stock housings with the HID bulbs attached (I will do the left housing over the weekend) for a set of unmodified housings and $450 (I'll cover shipping in the continental US). Please contact me privately (chester_p_wong@yahoo.com) if interested. ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Kick off your party with Yahoo! I haven't tried it, but the writer tracks his car a lot so it should work OK. #4. M3 vs Supra - from Cesar Omar

Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 05:17:56 -0400 From: "Cesar Omar" <cesar@cfl.rr.com> Subject: M3 vs Supra The E36 M3 is not the best car in the world. It's one of the best cars in the world along with the likes of F335, McLauren F1, Nissan skyline GTR. all of these cars are superior in different aspects, however in the area of handling, reliabilty, and comfort the E36 M3 beats all. About the SUPRA Definitively it is FASTER than the M3 but Pleeeaaaaase don't compare the Supra to the E36 M3. The Supra lacks of history...romance...a true track borne heritage. I have had newer and older Supra turbos, Saleen SR, Mustang Cobra, I appreciate all this cars, but it doesn't rock my world. I am now looking forward to the 2001 M3 or install a turbo or supercharger on my E36M3 (JIM C. HURRY!), I realize that my view is rather cultish, but thats okay. Okay, so I had my sway bar bushings (RD Sport) lubed up (what seems like) more than 2 months ago but I don't know what they used (obviously not what I asked for or at least not enough of it). Either way, the squeek is back and it's MUCH louder than before. I've also noticed that the "clunk" I was getting before has returned but on the opposite side. (I originally tightened all the swaybar links AND the X-brace which got rid of the problem). For reasons that I wish weren't true, I'll be visiting L.A. for most of the daytime hours this weekend. I have yet to find a local Ventura shop that I trust and I STILL don't have my own jacks, etc. let alone a garage to work in so I'll need someone elses help. Do any of you know of a place/shop in L.A. or on the way to/from Ventura that I can go to that's open on Saturdays and won't cost me a fortune for a bushing lube and sway bar link/X-brace bolt tightening affair? It sounds like something could break at any moment so I'm getting a bit worried which leads me to another question. Being that the stock suspension is set up for everything to run in harmony and I have aftermarket sways but stock everything else, is it possible that the increased stiffness is putting too much pressure on the stock pieces (including sway bar links)? What type of damage could this be causing? Thanks for any suggestions, Jonathan L. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com -------------------- 5 -------------------- Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 17:32:02 EDT From: WCRoswell@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] AA exhaust and Supra Turbo encounter Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 11:01:35 -0500 >From: Andy Korczynski <Andy@casskor.com> >Subject: RE: [E36M3] Opinion Question >Never heard the UUC exhaust, but I've had the AA one for almost a year now >and the sound is very nice. I have had an AA exhaust for a little over a year now. I had a leak and had to have it welded about six months ago. Now, I am getting the tip separation; the outside of the exhaust tips However, I did contact AA and they have offered two choices either to send me new exhaust tips which I can have welded on or to send the exhaust back and they will repair it or send me a new one. AA stands behind their products. As far as the sound, the original exhaust was way way to quiet. The new AA is quiet crusin' on the highway and at low rpm. However, it is only moderately loud with rpms 3-6.5k I compare it with a 5Zigen exhaust I had on an Acura Integra GSR and it is pretty tame :( Anyway a little off subject I was getting on the expressway the other night and there was a Supra Turbo which I don't think was stock. He was zipping through the traffic and I and the opportunity to get beside him with a 1/2 mile clearing ahead. We started maybe 80 or 90 and got up to 105 when he proceeded to walk away from me as if I were standing still. I would image he was doing 130 or so and then traffic and then my exit. No! It couldn't have been stock. Yes, I should have downshifted at 100. Anyone else had any Supra Turbo experiences? If you spend a lot of time at the track and/or drive very aggressively on the street, the AA may meet your requirements. If, like me, you're rarely at the track and don't wind it out constantly on the street, the AA may seem too mild and the louder UUC will satisfy most of the time. The UUC is about 10 pounds lighter than the AA, for those who obsess about weight. Reed/Seattle >I looove the AA exhaust (but I admit to never hearing a UUC).
