Also I noticed a >slight vibration, and I wasn't sure if it was my rotors warping or the >pads doing something funky. It's not a strong vibration like the last >time I warped my rotors... old fluid is usually a spongy feeling all the time. if it starts good, then gets bad (but with the same pedal feel) it's fading. and your rotors are probably warped. but not as much as before. >I think this is brake pad fade, but I wanted to check with you guys -- >is it? What else should I look at? yes it was. the only thing to do is get better (race) pads. stainless steel lines might help too, but pads will help more. >Do the stock pads fade that much? if you use them hard yes. i'm one of the people who says stock pads are better then R4s pads for the track. but it's a small line. they are both just about as bad for "hard track use" as the other. stock pads DO fade a bit more, but R4s pads get hotter overall. i'll take a bit of fade (which is a sign you need to slow down or stop the session, not keep going by the way) over pads that get super hot and warp rotors. >Perhaps I should just have my rotors checked and the calipers rebuilt >and use PF90's from now on.... that's the way to go. P.S. as i alluded to above, if you're brakes are fading, it's time to stop. you're not in a race, where you "have to finish". fading brakes are not only unsafe, but pretty much guaranteed to cause other problems (warping rotors, boiling fluid, baking calipers, etc...) if you get fade STOP. (after a long long cooldown) and don't use the brakes as hard next session. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

From what I know, it has special additives for that transmission. Clutches and other components will fail and you may end up buying a new or rebuilt 5HP18 transmission. Don't even think about buying ESSO LT from the dealer.. 5 liters cost $200! I highly recommend that you do NOT change the ATF in that vehicle. I don't care if you buy synthetic ATF from Mobil, Castrol etc... Even if you still wanted to change the fluid, there's a special procedure in how do it and it is not like changing the engine oil. So please leave it there. As for your rear differential, you can use conventional or synthetic gearlube 75w-90 used for limited slip.. Redline, Lubro Moly are good brands! Good luck with your inspection II and did you enjoy changing the microfilter? =) Take Care, Jonathan Caldito BMW Level 1 Tech (Trainee for now)

(if i'm your instructor the session is over at least) >I had people tell me that the R4S weren't "real" pads and that I >should have bought R4 pads instead. hmmm.. well I don't really like >changing my pads that much so I wanted one pad that worked for both >the street and the track. there is no pad that works good for both. either change them or live with race pads around town. >consensus seems to be that if you can put up with the noise, then get >PF90's, which I was *going* to do, but like an idiot I didn't check >brake pad thickness last time I was at the track. actually if you're going to leave them on all the time, i like R4 pads better. quite a bit less noise, a tiny bit less dust, and a tiny bit less performance. (plenty for heavy track usage however) when i was changing them every track event, i used PF90s. they work the best. 100 times better then R4s pads or stock pads. when i got lazy and left my race pads on, i used R4 pads. 95 times better... ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

I thought only the OBD-II cars had more than one? And to answer your question.. I'm not going to change mine until the CE light goes on for a bad O2 sensor or 100k, whichever comes first. I mean, wouldn't a bad sensor trip a light? Or does the computer not look at the switching speed of the sensor? I understand that they get slow long before they fail. And a slow sensor means that the swings between rich and lean are longer and wider than necessary. But the average should still be at stoich. #8. H&R Coil over impressions? - from Rob

Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 17:30:01 -0600 From: "Rob" <motor@cadvision.com> Subject: H&R Coil over impressions? M3'ers, I've got the opportunity to buy a set of H&R coil overs for a very good price but I'd like to hear from people who have used them before I buy them. Is the ride quality acceptable for daily street use? Are the springs rates good or will I have to screw around and buy different rates to get the car set-up properly? TIA, Rob '98 M3

We are working with a new place to verify our cars with and without the camber washers and etc. We think they will be more accurate and cost effective. Don't know about Kumho street tires, but i'm an authority on how to RUIN a perfectly good set of V700s at Heartland Park! #10. S02PP's - from Andy Chi

Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 16:33:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Andy Chi <m3flyer@yahoo.com> Subject: S02PP's Hi all, So after I got my S02PP's ($840 for all four shipped from Tire Rack, what a steal!), I noticed a few things. My CD player now skips a lot when I pull some hard turns. Before, the Pilots will just let go predictabily, now the S02PP grabs. Must be all that extra force from the grip... S02PP's do not slide as easily as Pilots, but love to squeal when cornering hard. Whereas you hardly ever hear anything from the Pilots. They ride so much more comfortable even with 40PSI all around that I thought I was low on air. With 40PSI in my Pilots, it was "bang, bang, bang whenever I go over bumps." Not that it was ever a problem, but for some of our uh, "comfort oriented" M3 pilots, that might be a data point of interest. I didn't break traction coming out of a little water puddle in 1st gear at 4500rpm. The Pilot will spin like there's no tomorrow. All of the above were done without ASC, which I turn off everytime I get into the car, right after I hit the door lock button. ps. Who should I buy my floating rotors from?
