Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 11:59:22 -0400 From: nabli@attglobal.net Subject: Airbag recall - 99V-063.001: Recoding the E36 M3 MRS Control Module Here is the info guys: "GROUP 72 72 10 99 Woodcliff Lake, NJ Safety Restraint Systems Service Engineering Subject Recall 99V-063.001: Recoding the E36 M3 MRS Control Module Perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles the next time they are in the shop for maintenance or repairs, and prior to delivery. Model E36 M3 with side airbags (option 260) Situation The side airbag system is sensitive to certain non-crash impacts such as contacting large potholes or curbs at substantial speed. This could cause the side airbag of the vehicle to deploy without an actual side crash or impact severe enough to cause significant visual damage to the vehicle. Unexpected deployment of the side airbags could cause serious or fatal injury if the occupant's head is resting near any side airbag and could temporarily (or momentarily) distract the driver from controlling the vehicle. Depending on traffic conditions, and the driver's reaction, this inadvertent deployment could cause a crash and/or personal injury. The Customer Recall letter is attached. AFFECTED VEHICLES E36 M3 (Convertible, 4 door, and 2 door) with side airbags - option 260 produced from 11/96 up to 8/99 In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action. The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. This means that dealers may not deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment unless the safety defect or noncompliance has been remedied before delivery. CORRECTION Recode the MRS module with the updated software in CD20.0. (Coding version C20.0). Some customers may express concern about driving their car to your Service Department for this repair. To handle cases of this nature when necessary, BMW will allow (1) for towing affected vehicles to the nearest BMW Center through the Roadside Assistance system to have the procedure performed, or (2) for sending a technician to the customer's residence in those cases where this would be more economical than towing. If towing the customer's car is necessary, please call Roadside Assistance at 1-800-332-4269 and make the arrangements on the customer's behalf. PROCEDURE CD 20.0 MUST be installed in the DIS/MoDic III. Refer to the installation instructions in SI 07 02 96 (9/99, attachment 1 and 2) 1. Defect Code 00 65 37 01 00 Recoding airbag control unit Labor Operation: 00 52 010 Labor Allowance: 5 FRU January 2000 RECALL CAMPAIGN NO. 99V-063.001 Dear BMW Owner: This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. A"BMW AG has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1997-1999 Model Year BMW M3 automobiles. Our records indicate that you are the owner of a potentially affected vehicle. DESCRIPTION OF DEFECT The defect involves the side airbag system of your car. The system is unduly sensitive to certain non-crash impacts, such as experienced when contacting large potholes or curbs at substantial speed. This could cause the side airbags of the vehicle to deploy without an actual side crash or impact severe enough to cause significant visible damage to the vehicle. Unexpected deployment of the side airbags could cause serious or fatal injury if the occupant's head is resting near any side airbag. Also, unexpected deployment could temporarily (or momentarily) distract the driver from controlling the vehicle and, depending on traffic conditions and the driver's reaction, result in a crash and/or personal injury. DESCRIPTION OF REPAIR The remedy will consist of recalibrating the central airbag control module to reduce sensitivity to these non-crash impacts. This modification will require approximately one hour and will be performed free of charge by your Authorized BMW center. Additional time will probably be required, depending on the BMW center's scheduling and processing. PRECAUTIONS 1. CONTACT YOUR AUTHORIZED BMW CENTER TO HAVE THE NECESSARY MODIFICATION PERFORMED ASSOON AS POSSIBLE. 2. Until the repair is performed, caution should be exercised when encountering rough roads, potholes, curbs, etc. In such conditions, proceed carefully, avoiding excessive speed and severe bumps. 3. All occupants should always be properly restrained (children in appropriate child restraint systems; larger children and adults using safety belts) and sitting upright. Never let an occupant's head rest near any side airbag. Do not lean towards or against a door with a side airbag. 4. Refer to the appropriate safety information in your Owner's Manual (see pages 50-52) and the BMW Safety Tips card. Observe the warnings contained in the airbag warning labels on your car. 5. If you are not the sole driver of your car, please advise all other drivers of these possible consequences. OTHER INFORMATION If you are no longer the owner of this vehicle, we would appreciate your furnishing us with the name and address of the new owner, using the enclosed return postage-paid card. Should you have any questions about this campaign, please contact your Authorized BMW center. We appreciate your confidence in our product, and we wish to do everything we can to retain your confidence. Should you need additional assistance, you may contact BMW Customer Relations at 1-800-831-1117. If the BMW center is unable to remedy the defect without charge or within a reasonable period of time, you may notify the Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Washington, DC 20590, or call the toll-free Auto Safety Hotline at 1-800-424-9393 (Washington, DC area residents may call 202-366-0123). PF-90s are about the easiest pads on the planet to bed, but you still have to do it. basically all you have to do with PF-90s is let them mate (mechanically) to the rotors. (the "heat curing" is all done for you at the factory) the pads and rotors are NOT flat, and they need some time to "grind" themselves together. until then, there's not much contact, which means not much stopping power. so if you slap new ones on at the track, and go flying ont the track, you'll discover soon that you don't have full stopping power right away. i usually drive a few miles on surface streets first. (to get the very rough edges off) then i do 3-4 hard stops from 70 to about 20, with a minute or two in between to let them cool off. and that's it, they are bedded. (the 17 mile drive from my house to SIR is perfect for this procedure, 5 miles to the highway with a few stoplights, then highway for the hard stops) if you HAVE to change to new pads at the track, just be wary the first few laps. you won't have full brakes. give youself some extra time to stop the first session. and by session #2 you'll be fine. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
