#3. Probably a FAQ: How to fix the noise from a loose converter heat shield - from Arvid Jedlicka

Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 21:33:28 -0500 From: "Arvid Jedlicka" <arvidj@visi.com> Subject: Probably a FAQ: How to fix the noise from a loose converter heat shield The heat shields around the front catalytic converters on our '97 M3 coupe appear to be loose and are rattling.. I assume the "correct" fix is to buy new converters with new heat shields as the heat shields seem to be "folded" on to the converter rather than bolted. But I'm wondering if there is a more "financially responsible" fix that could be suggested. Thanks, Arvid

I was specifically referring to the curing aspect of bedding the PF pads. They certainly do still need to be mechanically mated to the rotors. It has been my experience with the PFs, that they bed/mate to the rotor much more quickly when I used ATE power discs (unfortunately not available for the E36 M3). These are essentially a grooved rotor which, perhaps, serves to grind or cut the pad on the edge of the grooves until they are mated. It would seem that straight cut grooved rotors and/or crossdrilled rotors would have the same effect. I've never heard of such a problem with E36 convertibles, whether M3 or non-M3. E-mail me privately if you live in the PA area. I'll introduce you to the techs over at my local d-ship. They're very good. >>> <JSDONE@aol.com> 08/16/00 09:18PM >>> Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 21:12:04 EDT From: JSDONE@aol.com Subject: Need help with my M3 convertable..... After 3 times this summer in the dealership my top has given me problems. So far the excuses have been, reprogram the computer, adjust linkage and realign the servo's.. All 3 times I have been out of town and luckly not run into rain... I'm thinking about selling the car. The dealership has left parts in the trunk and not put back together.. Is this a typical problem with BMW convertables and do the dealerships have a clue what to do especially in their put it back together as they found it procedures.. I cannot live with a car that is not reliable... ************************************************************* List Commands UNSUBSCRIBE - (in subject line) unsubscribes you from the mailing list. *************************************************************

I had a similar problem and my tech told me that the cat and the heat shield were one piece. My tech replaced the entire unit. A la warranty, thanks be to God. >>> "Arvid Jedlicka" <arvidj@visi.com> 08/16/00 10:38PM >>> Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 21:33:28 -0500 From: "Arvid Jedlicka" <arvidj@visi.com> Subject: Probably a FAQ: How to fix the noise from a loose converter heat shield The heat shields around the front catalytic converters on our '97 M3 coupe appear to be loose and are rattling.. I assume the "correct" fix is to buy new converters with new heat shields as the heat shields seem to be "folded" on to the converter rather than bolted. But I'm wondering if there is a more "financially responsible" fix that could be suggested.
