Date: Thu, 17 Aug 2000 13:26:34 -0400 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: Poll on Jack Stands Everyone who works on their cars (or would like to), I have the following questions and I would appreciate your response (privately please to save bandwidth). 1) What types of jack stands do you use (Norco, Lincoln, Sears, Tru Cut, etc.)? 2) What size are they (3 ton, 5 ton, etc.)? 3) How many do you own? 4) What type(s) of BMW(s) do you use them with? The reason for the questions is I am in the process of designing and manufacturing a part which will help you safely jack up your car. A couple of the people on this list have seen the prototype and have encouraged me to pursue production of the part once I obtain a patent. I would appreciate your responses so I can properly design the part to fit as wide array of applications as possible. Please reply privately. I will keep the list appraised of my progress and offer the parts here first once the prototypes are done (three to four weeks). Best regards, Rich

As I remember from previous posts to the list, the overrev is stored to some form of non-volatile memory (i.e. doesn't get erased when it looses power). Andrej '97 M3

The only way they're reset is via the DIS/Modic, or if the fault no longer exists after X amount of driving cycles. The over rev code can only be erased by BMW. Nick

#7. Stock M3 Springs - Number & Color Of Dots - from Wen Liew
Top
Date: Thu, 17 Aug 2000 19:30:05 GMT From: "Wen Liew" <wwliew@hotmail.com> Subject: Stock M3 Springs - Number & Color Of Dots A few weeks ago, Ron Katona did a survey on stock spring height and the results varied by as much as 1". My 96/2 lux was a little below the average height. I had since installed Eibach Pro-Kit (2059.01 for 96 and later) with Bilstein Sport and when I compared the Eibachs to the stockers side by side, the Eibachs were only 1/4" shorter, not quite the 1-1/4" they claim in their ad. Same is true when I measured from middle of wheel to fender with the Eibachs installed, however, the right hernia effect is gone. Now I understand why I always get asked if my car was "lowered" (even though I don't have a spoiler lip). Maybe my stock springs have sagged or my shocks were dead. So, I am curious whether the US M3 came with different springs. If you know the number and color of the dots on your front and rear springs, please post or email me. Also include info on your car like year, 2 or 4 door, lux non-lux. I need to check mine again but I think my fronts had 3 or 4 white dots and the rears had 4 green dots. I also had H&R Sport to compare against and below are the spring length comparison: Front: Stock 96 M3/2 lux > Eibach Pro-Kit = H&R Sport Rear: H&R Sport > Stock 96 M3/2 lux > Eibach Pro-Kit I was a little surprised that the H&R Sport were taller than the stockers at the rear. BTW, if there are any Euro M3s on this list, I'd appreciate your info too. Thanks. What if a BMW technician takes your car out for a joy ride thinking, "Wow, this car has a super charger...sway bars, and suspension work...it must really fly" and overrevs the engine? He or she can reset it and no one will be the wiser...until a few months down the road when your car performs like crap. Anyone have preventative measures they take to make sure this doesn't happen aside from noting the odometer when dropping the car off? The ride in question is a '99 E36M3. It would also be helpful to know who sells these mothers. Actually, what I was trying to say was that, as far as the over-rev code is concerned, the dealer can't erase it. The DME has to be sent in to BMW for clearing of the code (that particular code). #11. Euro mirror Group purchase - from Chester Wong
Top
Date: Thu, 17 Aug 2000 13:04:07 -0700 (PDT) From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> Subject: Euro mirror Group purchase Hi guys and gals. I am setting up a group purchase for euro replacement mirrors (glass only) for M3 style mirrors (I think that applies to some old M5s as well, correct?). Here's the deal: What you are looking at is a group purchase for the following part numbers: 51 16 2 267 191 = driver's side 51 16 2 267 224 = passenger's side Currently, on US spec mirrors, the driver's side is flat with no writing and the passenger side mirror is convex but has the writing ("Object appear closer..."). The euro replacements will make the driver's side convex so that you can see two lanes over and will leave the passenger side the same minus the annoying writing. Here is a recent post by Jim El Nabli: "I was until about a month ago when I replaced the glass with the Euro M3 glass. I never particularly like the standard driver M3 mirror because of the limited sight it provides. The Europeans of course would not tolerate such a useless (or limited use) angle. They ended up using the same mirror that we get on the passenger side for both sides - without the writing. :-) I guess Europeans are a bit more perceptive and don't need the "writing on the wall" so to speak. They are also not as litigious as the U.S. counterparts. I can picture some "ho jo" on the stand testifying in his bazzillion dollar lawsuit that BMW was clearly negligent when they omitted the warning. :-) Ok, back to the point. After driving my friends M3 this past weekend with the factory U.S. glass, I can't believe how I managed with the same mirror on my car. It took me a couple of days to get used to it and now seems perfectly normal. I can see over two lanes to my left and don't have to deal with any blind spots. This mirror may not be for everyone but I think it was definitely worth it for me. Oh I forgot to mention an added benefit. It appears to make my car go faster because, unlike before, everyone is so far behind me now. :-) Cheers, Jim E. " The mirrors list for about $100 each. Depending on interest and demand, we might be able to get the price down to ~$70 each. Procedure for replacing the mirror is as easy as adjusting the mirror so that you can get your finger under the glass and popping it out. Then pop the replacement glass back in (more detailed instructions will be posted at a future date). With the euro glass, you will still retain the defrosting/heated function. PAYMENT: ---------------- Rather than annoy the selling party with minor details with collecting funds, I will collect all the funds and pay for them in bulk. I will also ship out the mirrors ($5 S&H...insured, of course). Interested parties will pay me via PayPal.com (http://www.paypal.com) using a credit card. If you do not have a paypal.com account, if you sign up, they will give you $5. If you do sign up, I would appreciate it if you would use me as a referrer (either use chester_p_wong@yahoo.com or (https://secure.paypal.x.com/refer/pal=chester_p_wong%40yahoo.com)) so that I get some cash for my troubles ;) Of course, I will ask for payment after we have a concrete number (ergo a concrete price). WHAT TO DO NOW: --------------------- Send me an e-mail (privately to chester_p_wong@yahoo.com) with the following format (Subject line being "Euro GP Order"): Name: [first name] [middle initial] [last name] E-Mail address: [e-mail address preferably the same as paypal.com] Shipping address: [line 1] [line 2] [city], [state] [zip] Driver side euro mirror quantity: [quantity--0 or more] Passenger side euro mirror quantity: [quantity--0 or more] Only e-mail me if you are serious about the purchase using the assumption that the price will be around $70 per mirror. The latest to get in on the GP is Fri Aug 25, 2000. Thanks for the bandwidth, Chester ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
