#2. Coming out of warranty... - from juan_rico

Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 09:51:03 -0700 From: "juan_rico" <juan_rico@captionsinc.com> Subject: Coming out of warranty... Hi List... Well, my //M3 is rapidly approaching 100K on the clock, which means I'll be out of warranty ;( Except for the inevitable water pump failure, my car has performed flawlessly (literally) over 80K (time I've owned it), with 4 to 5 long and hard canyon runs weekly... I have the feeling in the pit of my stomach that everything will start failing and coming apart after 100K. Figures. So in preparation for this, I'm taking my car in for service on Tuesday, and I hope to get as much done as possible. I'm already aware of a couple of things that need to be fixed, but there might be other things which I'll surely overlook, so I'm asking the collective wisdom of this list to give me a few pointers on what to look for, what to get replaced or fixed before it becomes a catastrophic and $$$ failure later on (since I've already decided that I'm going to keep this car forever...that's how much I love it ;) I have the Warranty Gold Diamond coverage, if that matters. Is there anybody on this list who's already exhausted their extended warranty and has a +100K mileage M3? Thanks for any tips... Juan (Bracing for the worst)

I paid $89.95 for it in PA. Although your car won't get the pre-owned warranty, you'll get a fancy 6 page breakdown of each and every (stock) element of your car, from bumper to bumper, from tire to roof. The tech, service mgr, and the d-ship will sign off on it as well. An excellent record to have when the car's sold. >>> "juan_rico" <juan_rico@captionsinc.com> 08/18/00 01:08PM >>> Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 09:51:03 -0700 From: "juan_rico" <juan_rico@captionsinc.com> Subject: Coming out of warranty... #4. Radiator Fan - from Michael Ting

Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 14:47:08 -0500 From: "Michael Ting" <lupin@purdue.edu> Subject: Radiator Fan I just finished replacing my alternator belt. The tricky part was removing the radiator fan. What I did was use a 32 mm open wrench, and use air-hammer to hit the wrench on the other end. Since I can't loosen up fan by turning on it. I was wondering of your methods to remove that fan. Thanks. Michael Ting --------------------

I used my hand to hit the wrench :-o BTW, if you swap the belt from underneath, you don't need to remove the fan :) Nick

How about on track day? Do you check this cold in your garage in the AM, or warm pressures as you do after a lap on the track? Thanks for the info and clarification! Chris C.

#7. M3 Recalls - from Dargan
Top
Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 18:38:51 -0400 From: "Dargan" <dargpa01@slic.com> Subject: M3 Recalls I sent this in to the Digest and I believed it appeared around 25 June. "First Inspection - Data Point I just had the first inspection done on my '99 M3. The "inspection light" came on right around 9000 miles. (I don't use the car in the winter.) Approximately 2000 of the total were track miles; the rest almost exclusively highway. Dropped car off in the morning; picked it up in the afternoon. They explained what they had done. No mention was made of the stainless brake lines, UUC strut bar, X-brace, etc., or of "over-revs". I don't know if anything was put on their computer or not. The "First Service" item includes a filter insert and 7 quarts of 5W40 SYN. Two other services were "Campaigns". First was 99V063 which was the air bag call back. I had never heard of the other -- 99EA01. This included an O-ring; harness; crankshaft POS/RPM; 8-cable strap. They just said that there had been problems with the crank positioner wiring and this was a service update. The bill was, of course, zero. Somewhat noteworthy, I think, is that I had zero complaints or fixes to request." The second sounds like the problem that Rob is having with his 95, but I do not know if it is the subject of a recall. HTH.
