Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2000 20:36:54 -0400 From: "Adam Fila" <ylf@mindless.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Warped Rotors Jeffrey, Before you start spending money, make sure your rotors are really warped. After my first school at Summit Point this spring with stock pads (a track very hard on brakes) my front brakes felt like they were warped - they would shudder when applying them. I only noticed it on the highway on the way home, so I had no chance to have a more experienced person drive my car and tell me what's up. Anyway, due to my laziness, I kept postponing the rotor swap, and after about a week of driving, the shudder went away, the brakes now were smooth as new. The only new thing was that after HARD braking, an interesting pattern of brake material would form on the surface of the rotor, suggesting that the rotor isn't perfectly smooth, but has some surface imperfections. I won't pretend I really know what is happening, but it seems like after a week of driving, the pad material filled these areas and created a smoother surface. I have since discussed this with several experienced driving school attendees and instructors, and I was told that this is not uncommon, and that my rotors are not warped. Just this weekend I went out to Summit Point again, this time with PF-90's. I experienced slight shudder again during the first session (I was warned about this - apparently part of the process of the new pads bedding) but it went away and after that the brakes worked amazingly well and smooth. I was braking MUCH harder than last time, from much higher speeds, and had over 2 hours more track time (including one 60 minute session on the second day - my instructor let me go out during the intermediate run group after my beginner run group session), yet the brakes never faded, never showed any hint of warping anything and barely show any wear. Definitely a worthwhile upgrade even for a beginner, as you'll feel much more confident in your braking and much less worried about warping the rotors. -Adam Fila '95 M3 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeffrey Stowe" <jstowe@cisco.com> To: "E36M3" <e36m3@bmwmpower.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 23, 2000 6:32 PM Subject: [E36M3] Warped Rotors > Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2000 15:23:52 -0700 > From: Jeffrey Stowe <jstowe@cisco.com> > Subject: Warped Rotors > > Ahem.. hypothetically speaking :) > If a rookie was to take his M3 to Thunderhill after not grasping the > detailed braking dissertations provided on this list and then run his M3 in > multiple run groups (sharing car with other driver) for multiple days and > thusly ended up with warped rotors. . . . > > A) Is there any chance of pawning this off on the dealer as a warranty fix? > > B) What is the approximate cost of the replacing the rotors with the Euro > rotors (or stock for that matter)? > > C) How much braking efficiency is lost with the warped rotors? When off the car, that nut holds the whole strut assembly together. If you removed it, the force of the compressed spring could "~-B-O-I-N-G~" the top strut bearing off at high velocity, removing teeth and whatnot. Not pretty. Anyway, to properly disassemble the strut assembly, you need a spring compressor. When on the car you should have no problem removing the nut and replacing it with another. The weight of the car *should* keep the spring compressed. As a side note, self-locking nuts do not need lock-tite. Perhaps your original nut is defective or something. Just make sure you replace it the proper type of nut. -Mark Kelly *still have all my teeth : )E) >-------------------- 5 -------------------- >Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2000 14:10:53 -0500 >From: Milvid Ken LT ASCIET <kenneth.milvid@eglin.af.mil> >Subject: suspension question > >I am having a recurring problem with the self-locking nut on the top of my >front, passenger-side strut tower coming loose. If the springs put a lot of pressure on the nut even while the weight of the car is compressing the spring, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to remove it. From personal experience (mostly motorcycle experience where helmets are more often put into use :-( than auto helmets), I prefer Arai first, Shoei second, Bieffe third. I am not sure if all of these make SA rated helmets but Arai does and I think Bieffe does. A top notch Arai can cost you $400 or more. I paid $550 for one of mine and $400 for the other. Both are top notch. Very comfortable, excellent fit and finish, and very light (carbon Kevlar laminate shell). Best regards, Rich

This nut isn't under load when the car is on the ground. I remove it to change my springs, rather than using a compressor (it works..really!). You do need a compressor to put the new springs in but not to take the old ones off. One note.. it's a lot easier to get the new nut on with an impact wrench. Otherwise you have to use a hex driver through a big socket wrench. Not fun.. -Matt --- Mark Kelly <mark@garden.net> wrote: > Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2000 20:51:51 -0400 > From: Mark Kelly <mark@garden.net> > Subject: suspension question reply #3 > > Different springs could make a difference in my > advice. And it would be nice to see some of the grafitti cleaned up along the rail line coming from the airport. Admittedly I haven't been in there for about 4 years or so. So maybe its much better now. I am assuming the Intake is not California Smog legal. Correct? If not, would it be reasonable to just remove the intake and re-install the factory airbox every two years for smog inspection? Of course, this is a hypothetical question as I would never knowingly violate the smog regulations. I am assuming there are no smog issues with the shark code itself. thanks again for any insights. jeff 98 M3/4 - not sharked 93 M5 on the way - already sharked Jeff - Understanding the possibility of taking the wrath of Conforti loyalists, I have to say that I have my reservations about the added HP of the Conforti Chip. I had my car dyno'ed a few weeks back (and had my car referenced in a posting to this digest) and found that my 97 M3/2 ran about 222rwhp with the Conforti cold air intake and Conforti chip. Great results, but another 97 M3/2 was tested with just the ECI? intake and no chip. Results? 223 rwhp. BTY, I did also reprogram the original software (I have the shark injector) following ALL the instructions and noticed that the HP curves and Torque curvs where identical. I have since learned that there is a "learning curve" (or un-learning curve in this instance) that the ECU has. Since I loaded the "original software" and did not take that car out for a day or two of driving, the ECU did not un-learn the upgraded software so the head-to-head results of with-chip to without-chip were meaningless. I originally installed the Cold Air Intake without the chip since it was backordered. I noticed a HUGE difference! However, when I received the Shark Injector and loaded the Conforti software, I was underwhelmed. Do not take these comments wrong - I am still happy with my set up but I am still searching for answers to the amount of HP the Conforti Chip adds. If you are saving for this, get the Conforti or ECI? Cold Air Intake and guage whether you want the chip. I love the fact that the rev limiter is now at 7000 rpm and the mph limiter is removed. If I noticed anything else may be a little bit of mid range rwhp increase. In the interest of full disclosure....
