I've always used an impact wrench in the past, how does one damage that bearing? overtightening? What size is the strut nut? With Konis, there is no provision for a hex key in the top, how does one hold the shaft in place? thanks all! -kit, about to do suspension for the first time on a bimmer 97 m3/4, waiting for it's konis and H&Rs

There's nothing permanent you can do about it. Try smearing a thin coat of high-temp anti-seize (like LubroMolly or something) on the BACKS of the pads. This will help for a while, but the squealing will eventually come back. You can also grind the sides of a socket down flat and use a wrench on it. -Al 95 M3

If you are going to swap pads, get track pads that are meant for the track. PF90's seem to be a popular choice. I use 'em and have had very good results. For the street I run MetalMasters. - Rich

A friend at work has a real clean '99 M3/2 in sliver with black interior that he wants to sell. It only has 15K miles on it and is located in the San Jose Bay Area. Any thoughts on what a fair price would be? Thanks, Steve Sharp '97 M3/2 (not for sale)

#8. Airbag alert light - from Steve Sharp

Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2000 11:57:45 -0700 From: Steve Sharp <steve.sharp@xilinx.com> Subject: Airbag alert light I just had the airbag alert light issue happen to me. Had the car in the local non-dealer shop for alignment and they reset the light, but also verified it was the passenger seat sensor. Dealer replaced that a week later under warranty. I was told that if the airbag alert is on, the airbag computer will deploy BOTH airbags even if no one is in the passenger seat since the computer can't tell if a passenger is present. Not dangerous, but could cost you more if you have an accident driving solo and both bags deploy. Steve

While many of us have the Peake Research tool developed with Jim Conforti, as far as I know it doesn't reset airbag lights. That's a shame too. But anyway, many 3rd party repair facilities have more advanced diagnostic and reset tools made by Snap-on and others. Here is my caution: **** Many of these tools have a selection to clear all codes and reset all service indicators **** Punch this selection and you could cost yourself serious $$. I had this recently happen to me accidentally at ProParts when they were troubleshooting a reassembly error on my seatbelt sensors. I was due for Inspection II and all of my lights got reset. As ubelievable as this will sound, I have a good relationship with the dealer and they did the Inspection II service and a bunch of other stuff on my word alone. This is especially lucky because I drive my car mostly on the track so the Inspection II was due with a measly 31K miles on it. not the normal 40K which is beyond the warranty period. We all know what turds the dealers can be and I could have easily had this service denied and understandably so. The lights would never have gone to service again for years to come and I would have missed out on this service under the maintenance agreement. So if you have airbag and other miscellaneous indicators reset at 3rd party shops, heads up. They can make an honest mistake that could cost you money. Make sure you alert them to your concerns. Oh good God Joe!! I thought you had been autoxing longer than Chester's been killing off body parts. ;-) I mildly disagree, I could go for more bite from the ole binders especially in the front to help rotate the car. Actually another one of those National types, Mark Sipe sez he uses Carbotech Panthers up front and Green-kelated in the rear. I wouldn't mind a little brake bias using diff'nt pads so I'm going to order some Carbotech Panthers for the front and keep my street Pagids in the rear. You guys should see some crazy in a Civic here in Detroa that uses R compound tires in the front and streets in the rear to rotate the old Honda.
