I have a set of these on the front of my E30 M3 after Laguna Seca this weekend (another GREAT school by Golden Gate Chapter). They're fine when cold and MISERABLE when hot. Things were great until I lost one of my brake duct hoses. The rotor on that side crisped instantly when braking for Turn 2. - Mark '95 M3 '97 528i 5-spd '88 M3, Hennarot ---- Mark Dadgar - Product Manager, Accessories (650) 230-5037 voice - (650) 230-2100 fax mdadgar@handspring.com - Handspring, Inc. #4. Power Door Lock Switch - from Peter Guagenti

Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 10:50:10 -0700 From: "Peter Guagenti" <peter@guagenti.com> Subject: Power Door Lock Switch I am attempting to install a power door lock switch based on the instructions posted on the Unofficial BMW site. I have a couple of questions though: - I want to use the factory switch. Does anyone know the pin configuration on them? There are four pins, what is each for? - How should I cut the hole for the switch? Anyone in the Bay Area handy with a dremel? ;-) - Is there anything I should be aware of when doing the install? Any tips/hints/tricks? Thanks in advance for your help. -peterg

#5. Blowouts and lug wrenches - from shane.a.kleinpeter@ac.com

Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 14:03:15 -0400 From: shane.a.kleinpeter@ac.com Subject: Blowouts and lug wrenches It was written: >Had a blowout at about 80 mph on I-81 yesterday. <snip> >The lug wrench didn't fit the M3's lug nuts. Couple of mm too big. >Ack! How could I have forgotten to check? Everyone hasn't looked >lately, go make sure that your M3 has the jack and the lug wrench, that >your spare has enough air, and that your freakin' lug wrench is the >right size. I'll wait. I gave my M3 a pretty good run through when I bought it certified pre-owned. It looked all in order and I drove it off the lot. About a year later, I was cleaning out the car after a driver's school and realized that there was no lug wrench with the car. I figured out that it was supposed to be in the battery tray by looking in the owner's manual. I keep forgetting to mention this to the dealer when I am in for service, but since 1) I only take the car in for warrenty work 2) The dealer is all the way across town 3) The dealer doesn't like me and the feeling is very mutual, I still have no lug wrench in the car. The car only really gets driven to and from driver's schools, so I usually have tools with me, but otherwise I'll have to depend on Roadside Assistance until the certified pre-owned warrenty expires in 2002. <snip> >(We escaped a soaking then, only to be paid back in >spades when at the Virginia Tech-Georgia Tech football game, which was >cancelled by a lightning monsoon.) Ha! And to think I was bumming because I had given up my tickets to go to a driving event this weekend. I felt bad for all the Hokie fans that drove from long distances to get soaked AND not see the Hokies whip up on the Yellow Jackets. >Props to BMW for the real spare and the free (while under warranty) >roadside assistance. Also for the strong rim, assuming I'm right and it >really is straight. But I'm confused about the lug wrench. Does BMW >use the same size lug nuts on all their cars? Not sure if I'm the >victim of an accidental part swap at BMW (read: BMW owes me a free lug >wrench), or one by the previous owner (read: I have to pay for one). Interested to see how this turns out since I am basically in the same boat. Shane Kleinpeter Tarheel Chapter '96 M3 '88 535is

I don't know about your car, but mine works fine. Yeah, I assumed that 99.9%+ of M3s have the right lug wrench, and that if mine came with the wrong one from the factory, it was a one-time mixup. I just talked to a BMW parts guy, who told me that all BMWs use the same size lug nuts, so the one I have is definitely a non-BMW part, so the mixup is clearly not BMW's fault. > Also, tell > us about the leather case? Where does the leather case go? It's actually leather-look (from 10 paces away, anyway) vinyl, not leather. Thin, black, held together by a strap through a gray plastic snap-lock clasp. The case is probably not from BMW, because there are no roundels on it. Contains a wrong-size lug wrench, an emergency sunroof closing wrench, and a towing hook. The case was sitting in the wheel well on top of the spare when I got the car. BMW provided the correct lug wrench. So the previous owner of my car mixed up his lug wrenches when he was cleaning two cars' trunks or something. So his other car probably has a 17mm lug wrench and 19mm lug nuts. Luckily, it's a $10 part. Though now that I'm fixated on lug wrenches, I'll probably end up buying a $60 meter-long socketed model suitable for removing gorilla-tightened lug nuts and fighting off bears. Someone on this list ordered and posted glowing comments about the Facom lug wrench (speak up whoever you are!). Not sure about the bear repellent capabilities of said lug wrench though... #9. Stereo Question - from Mike Cornwell
Top
Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 15:07:49 -0700 (PDT) From: Mike Cornwell <mcornwell@yahoo.com> Subject: Stereo Question I just purchased a Xeenon MP3 player for my '98 M3/C (http://www.xeenon.com/xeenonweb/main.htm). I don't have the unit yet, it should be here in a few days. In a nutshell, the unit sits in your trunk, and has a hard drive that you load your MP3's onto (about 5000 songs with the 17G disk that my unit has). The unit connects to your stereo either via RCA inputs, or with a cassette tape adapter (yuck!), and is controlled with the included LCD wired remote. Of course, you can also purchase a FM modulator, which I'd rather not use because of the slight degredation in quality. I'm assuming the M3 stereo (HK factory option) doesn't have any inputs, so I'm thinking of purchasing a new head unit which has built in auxillary inputs. If I go this route, is the BMW 6-disc changer controllable by any of other head units out there? I'm assuming Alpine head units could control it? Thanks for any input... If anyone has any questions about the Xeenon unit, I'd be happy to try to answer them once I get it installed. #10. [E36M3] Hood Support? - from twisty M3
Top
Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 15:53:03 PDT From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: [E36M3] Hood Support? I installed a CAI with heat shield this weekend and the fit was a bit tight. After the hood was closed, the right side was sitting a bit high but when I pushed it down it managed to "click" shut on that side also. After a couple of minutes I opened it up and the heat shield has formed a nice groove in the hood liner for a better fit but the right side of the hood still sits about 2 mm higher unless I push that corner down after it's closed. I've opened and closed the hood several times this weekend to check oil, check the intake temp. and show off my not-so-handy work to a couple of friends and there's been no problems... until today. I was showing a friend at work what the heat shield looked like and the hood support (shock?) isn't working. No support at all, it just opens and closes loosely without the usual resistance. This is a 13 month old car with 32k miles so it seems a bit premature (my Acura was fine after 5 years/90k). I didn't really have the time on my break to screw around with it... Is there some sort of valve adjustment on it? Could the pressure of the heat shield caused this (seems like it would just be a coincicence)? Any help/ideas appreciated, Jonathan L. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
