I'm running the 255s on 17x9s and mine go for 3-4 weekends with the stiff setup, more towards 3 weekends depending on how hard I drive. They always wear out on the outside edge, but I do tend to slide the car a good bit. I do need to work on some tire preservation driving techniques... As far as I know, there are no recall-able problems regarding the PP's. Let me add, however, that just this past week, one of my S02's (non-PP) *came off* my rim when I made a hard turn. I had to drive my car on half a tire (nice burning smell!) until I reached a gas station. When I got home, I inspected the tire and I could find no damage to it, except that much of the sidewall writing rubbed off while my car was riding on it! I'm unsure whether this problem could be attributed to my d-ship (which mounted it) or whether this is a problem attributable only to regular S-02's... I have to drop by my d'ship and get the tire inspected. The PP S-02's AND non-PP S-02's are PHENOMENAL tires in the rain AND in the dry. The Sports, on the other hand, don't handle as well in the rain. My buddy uses humongous 18" Sports on his Audi S4 and even with the quattro, he simply can't corner as well as he'd like to in the rain. I think that this is faulty reasoning to be comparing SUV on/off road tires to the ultra-high-performance street tires just because they are made by the same manufacturer. There is probably nothing what-so-ever in common between the two. Using the same logic, you could say that all Fords blow up because there was a problem with the Pinto or all BMW's have severe engine problems because of the problem with the blocks (sulfur content?) on the 5 series V8's a few years ago. I have the SO2 Pole Positions on my car that I keep properly inflated and I think that they are great. If Bridgestone/Firestone has some special offer because people stop buying their tires due to the fact that they associate that manufacturer with the SUV tire problem, all the better for me and I will pick up a spare set or two for the future. -Wayne -------------------- 8 -------------------- Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 09:47:43 -0500 From: "Rich Gay" <rich_gay@linbeck.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] race tires. on 8/29/00 6:03 PM, Kit Wetzler at kitwetzler@mindspring.com wrote: > what are you guys all using for race tires? I run 8.5" wide wheels on the track. I've gone through two sets of Kumho 245/45/17 and will never run them on my M3 again. They lasted two weekends both times. I've heard from a number of other people who have had similar results on various kinds of cars the past year. Apparently Kumho changed something in the production of the tire which appears to be dramatically reducing the longevity. So, the most recent tire I've tried is a 245/40/17 Hoosier, and so far I'm very pleased. One weekend and the wear looks good. Much better grip than the Kumho as well. I have a 95 M3, with Dinan fixed camber plates up front (you need more negative camber to get even tire wear), H&R springs (the least aggresive version), Koni's, and UUC sways. > How much fender rolling am I going to be in for with the 255? Jim Ochi, > I think you're running a 255... Well, for the 245/45 Kumho I had to do some minor rolling in the rear. Otherwise everything is fine. With the Hoosier I am getting some slight rubbing up front on the insider rear of the plastic wheel liner. No big deal. > Anyone in the bay area need to use the Tire Rack's fender roller? I > might try to get one out here... I used a dead-blow rubber mallet, just banged the hell out of the fenders. If the temperature isn't at least in the 70's you might want to use a hair dryer to put some heat on the paint so as to avoid some minor cracks. - Rich -------------------- 9 -------------------- Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 11:16:18 -0400 From: Peter H Reinhart <reinhart@neuro.duke.edu> Subject: Re: [E36M3] race tires. I also run 8.5" rims (Fikse Mach 5) with 245/45/17s on all corners. I've run about 5 sets of Kumhos on them and quite like them. They are a reasonable compromise between longevity and stick. Not quite as sticky as Hoosiers, but in my hands they last longer, and they cost a lot less. In terms of handling I'd rate them about as fast as R1s, maybe a second faster. Their handling at the limit is more 'comfortable' than the R1s. They tend to slide smoothly, whereas the R1s sort of slide-grab-slide. The Kumhos *absolutely* need to be heat cycled. Don't heat cycle them - get 4 good track days out of them. Heat cycle them - and then leave them for >48 hrs, they'll last 7-9 days. About twice as long! Having done both it seems that without heat cycling the rubber stays extremely soft when hot. After heat cycling and curing, the rubber is much harder, and still seems to be about as sticky on the track. Did you heat cycle your tires Rich? If not you may want to give Kumhos another chance. A lot of folk around here run them, and most people really like them. As Rich said, the tires will need some mild fender rolling on the rear, but having 8.5"s on all corners dramatically improves the handling of the car. Much more neutral. At a time trial last weekend I went a little too hot into a fast uphill right hander (turn 8 at CMP), and the car broke loose almost at the same time on all corners (amazingly it stayed on the track too....). My car is still basically stock, except that the strut towers are reversed to give me about -3o neg. camber up front (-1.9o) on the back. I'd love to try the Kumhos on stiffer suspension, since even with the neg. camber, they always cord on the outside edges (too much body roll). I suspect with hard shocks, springs, and a beefed up swaybar, tire life would be even longer by a day or two. In fact, you can bet that not every shop for whatever reasons has converted from solvent or isocyanate-catalyst paints to water-borne paints. The Glasurit portfolio, as I mentioned has water-borne, high-solids (HS) and solvent-borne paint systems: water-based Glasurit 90 Line and 66 Line, Glasurit 22 Line with HS products for direct gloss finishes and Glasurit 55 Line, the improved solvent-borne basecoat line. Glasurit has a new water-based clear, the product intended to help reduce solvent emissions significantly. According to Glasurit, the clear does as well as solvent-borne clears as far as gloss, flow and durability are concerned and is alledgely superior with regards to resistance to ultraviolet light. When you shop for a paint shop, you are interested in the PAINT PROCESS, not necessarily the paint and not just the company/brand. Glasurit processes for example include: GLASURIT RATIO-AQUA the water borne process, uses Glasurit 90, 2-state system GLASURIT RATIO-HS High Solids, uses Glasurit 22, 1-stage urethane system ... not sure of the catalyst but probably is still isocyanite & if so requires a bunny suit & full outside air hood to apply GLASURIT RATIO-CLASSIC uses Glasurit 55, 2-coat (basecoat/clearcoat) polyester system You can start reading about them here: http://www.glasuritnet.com/glasurit/english/start.htm You can get terrified by some of the isocyanates described in the MSDS (material data sheets) at: http://www.health.adelaide.edu.au/ComMed/consulting/eap/eap.htm I suspect that you could expect to pay extra for one-stage urethanes, but this is just a guess.
