I corded my second set on the first Sunday morning session of the second weekend. Perhaps the higher ambient (and track) temperatures here in the Houston area contribute to increased wear? A number of people have been have similar experiences around here the past year with Kumho's... - Rich

The wheels are the stock uncleanable 10-spokes, 17x7.5" front and spare, 17x8.5" back. Obviously I need to correct this ASAP. 1. Anyone got one 245/40ZR17 Pilot SX MXX3 with some tread left for sale?

Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 15:20:35 PDT From: "Sean Hester" <seanh_race@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] RE: race tires here's the deal with khumos... once they are overheated you're in trouble. they can't really be "brought back" like some other race tires can be by "taking it easy a couple laps". you pretty much have to come in and let then cool down for 30-60 minutes. and... once they are overheated, they wear away very quickly. you'd think this was obvious, but it's not as obvious as you'd think. some race tires, once overheated, just lose lots of grip. but they wear just as long. khumos seem to "sacrafice their body" to still provide some grip when you overheat them. in a RACE that's probably a good thing. for lapping (especially budget minded lappers) it's probably NOT a good thing. if you're overheating your tires, and want them to last you need to do one of two things. 1. stop overheating them, which probably means going slower or being smoother. (i could write 10 pages on how to drive without overheating your tires...) 2. use a different tire. (bfgs for instance don't overheat easily, and once you do overheat them, you can bring them back down by taking a couple laps ay 7/10ths. i have the tires, but they have good "heat management" charasatics) P.S. ambient temperature and USAGE (meaning how hard you're using them, (how fast your'e going, how smooth you are, how much slip angle you're at for each corner, etc...) are the the two biggest contrubiters to heat. (usage being a bigger factor. being in the south isn't really that good an excuse. ;-P) >From: "Rich Gay" <rich_gay@linbeck.com> >Reply-To: "Rich Gay" <rich_gay@linbeck.com> >To: E36M3 <e36m3@bmwmpower.com> >Subject: Re: [E36M3] RE: race tires >Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 14:33:14 -0500 > >Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 14:23:57 -0500 >From: "Rich Gay" <rich_gay@linbeck.com> >Subject: Re: [E36M3] RE: race tires > >on 8/30/00 2:13 PM, Bob Stommel at rstommel@iquest.net wrote: > > > Believe it or not, heat cycling AND shaving will make Kumhos last even > > longer than just heat cycling them. (my tires last 12 driver schools, woo hoo!!!) - intermediate/fast: equipment doesn't last at all because you're trying so hard to go fast. (my tires only last 2 driver schools, pout!!!) - advanced: equipment begins to last longer, and longer, as you learn to be smoother and easier on the equipment. (my tires last 5-6 driver schools.) it sounds like you just got into stage 2. ;-) _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. I was looking for a little quieter cruising and a slightly better ride at the expense of the PP's exceptionally crisp initial turn-in, and that's exactly what I got. Tire Rack shows (slightly) faster dry lap times for the Pilot Sports, but so close that they're equals on track performance. Seems to be a matter of personal preference. Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 03:33:05 GMT From: "Ron Buchalski" <rbuchals@hotmail.com> Subject: Posting Email to the List Okay, for several weeks now, nearly every digest contains at least one message with a the subject being the title of the digest, and a short reply followed by the ENTIRE digest. For list members who receive messages in the Digest format: - Please paste in the subject of the message you're replying to. If you merely select Reply, the subject will be "Re: [E36M3] E36M3 #xxx", which doesn't convey any information about the content of the message. - When you Reply, most email software will insert the entire message in the body of the message. This means the ENTIRE DIGEST will be included in the reply, not just the message you're replying to. - Please delete the remainder of the messages being forwarded in your reply, and even delete unimportant parts of the message you're replying to. For example, if someone gives a four paragraph dissertation about the merits of a suspension modification, you really don't need to include his/her entire message along with your reply of "I agree". It just takes an extra minute to do this, but it will go a long way to improving the quality of the list. Thank you, -rb _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
