The President of the dealer, the service adviser, the > service manager, the shop foreman, or the technician? I'm not the kind of snip......... While I'm not a BMW Tech (my father is), I'd like to add a few things to Jonathan's post. Keep in mind that everything I say is the result of 12+ years of dinner conversations at the end of the day. Jonathan mentioned about who's responsible for bad service and also about the CSI rating. So far he's seen the service advisor pressure him to get the car done because the customer is waiting. The result is that he rushes the job and either forgets to clean the car thoroughly, forgets a screw loose, etc. I think in time he'll realize that the root problem of poor dealer service is the service advisor. All too many times, the service advisor promises to fix things for free, or that the car will be done by a certain time. The tech then gets the car and says WTF?!?! I have to replace ***** and not get paid for it?? What do you think is gonna happen next....you're gonna have a disgruntled tech working on your car because the advisor promised the customer something he shouldn't have. And why? Because he wants satisfy the customer with whatever it takes so that he can get a good CSI rating and a bigger bonus. Yet, in the end, the tech will get screwed. (You'll find this out pretty soon Jon. That's why they wouldn't let you talk to the experienced techs at school. They didn't want you to find out about this 'job perk'.) The same thing happens with when the car is suppose to be ready. The advisor will promise the car will be ready without checking with the tech. Yet, the tech might be in the middle of another big job. He's then rushed to do a job, which leads to stupid things being overlooked. Why? Cause the advisor wants to please the customer (at the expense of the tech's CSI rating). Don't get me wrong, the tech wants to please the customer also. He also gets rewarded if he receives a high CSI rating. But his job takes time and patience. You don't want to rush somebody that's fixing your car. But his job is hampered if he's rushed or forced to do work without pay. Bottom line is be patient with your dealer's service crew. If you're given something for free, don't forget the saying "you don't get something for nothing". Ask yourself what you might be losing. And don't blame or complain about the whole staff for one person's mistake. Complain about the person who is at fault (whether it be the advisor, tech, manager, porter, etc.). Nick '95 M3

Honestly, I did screw up at times and it really sucks. At times I would think it would be better if the customer sees what the tech is actually doing but it'll be hard to work with plus the insurence might be a bit crazy. Customers are allowed to see what the tech did on some occasions. Thanks for telling people what really goes on. I really think the tech is the boss of the service adviser. And yes, sometimes the advisers dont listen. Jon

#4. Tapping Noise (Valve Lifters ??) - from Bora Akyol
Top
Date: Sun, 03 Sep 2000 17:14:06 -0700 From: Bora Akyol <akyol@pluris.com> Subject: Tapping Noise (Valve Lifters ??) After autoXing my 95 M3 for the first time this weekend (not my first autoX), I noticed that after my 4 runs, the car started making (what I diagnosed as) a valve lifter tapping noise. The noise went away after I let the car cool down and drove it home. I never heard the noise before this. Do I need to do anything about this? Someone at the event suggested adding 1/2 quart oil before track events. I did that after the event and it seemed to cure the noise about 1/2 but not completely. As a new M3er, I would like your opinions. By the way, my first time autoXing this car and I did OK. I love the way it handles, so predictable and so precise. Bora

If I remember correctly, weren't there a few E36 M3's sold with this transmission overseas and was pulled because of problems? Will we ever see the SMG in US spec cars?

And yes, sometimes the advisers dont listen. > Neither the bmw tech nor the service advisor is "the boss" of the other...it is a TEAM effort. I hate sports metaphors in business because most of the time people talk about things like 'team work' without talking about what it is and isn't. What it isn't: BMW Service is not executed like a game of basketball where everyone has the same core skill set: everyone can shoot, pass, & dribble. What it is: BMW Service is instead more like a game of football where everyone has specialized skills and plays unique positions. And no...the tech is not the quarterback or some elevated star player. All positions are equally important. Neither the tech nor the service advisor is successful without the other. And if one player thinks the game is a solo sport like freestyle skiing, or "who can see the most BMW VisionWerke classes" then they are not using the same playbook... worstcase not even playing a game towards a common team effort. - Skip (I go to the BMW dealer for about 90% of my services and I like them a lot)

Will we ever see >the SMG in US spec cars? I spoke with a dealer in Switzerland, and he said that the used value for an SMG-equipped car was automatically $5 less than a standard car, despite the SMG's added cost at sticker. Apparently it just wasn't quite ready for prime-time, but I think track junkies would love it. -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@netcom.com
