I'm heading down to Laguna Seca this weekend to work on my race photography skills. Are there any bmw-specific things going on there to check out? I am assuming there isn't, but it might be fun for some local listers to get together for beers in Monterey, ya? I'll have a two-way FRS on channel 3-6 (as in 3'er, 6 cylinder), if anyone wants to ping me at the track. Now if my hotel carries Speedvision, so that I can watch the Italian GP live, my weekend will be complete (go BMW & Ferrari!) Daniel -- Daniel L. Smith - dls@daniel.org - Sonoma County, CA

CR's review presumably was based more on the E36 non-M3's. Remember that the E36 was first launched as 92 models. It would only make sense that 3 yrs thereafter, BMW would have smoothed out any apparent flaws from predecessor models. Nevertheless, I've never heard of 95 M3's with *warped heads*. I've ridden some 95's with 100k+ miles that operate no worse than my 96. I'd like to see 95 M3's be considered most reliable after 10 years.... so I can see you eat your computer. Yummmm.... Try some salt with your mouse. :-) >>> "Sean Hester" <seanh_race@hotmail.com> 09/05/00 05:48PM >>> Date: Tue, 05 Sep 2000 14:41:44 PDT From: "Sean Hester" <seanh_race@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Re: Which M3 Year is best? >Keith, >Consumer Reports rated the 95 E36's as the >"most reliable" among all E36's... >Something to keep in mind... and also note that >C.R. is a very *impartial* source, whereas many >of the R&T and C&D staff look harder for more >personal preferences rather than those of the >general public. hmmm... i know of 5, 95 M3s that have warped their heads. and i know of zero 96+ M3s that have done that. i know 95s came with plastic water pumps, and weaker valve retainer clips, and a really stupid (prone to break) radiator overflow bin. and there's probably dozens of other "improvements" on the later cars. the head warping phenomenon could just be because of age. (95s are older, maybe on 10 years we'll see that all M3s are just as prone to head warping as 95s?) but the others things are not. i'd NEVER expect the first year of a car to be the "most reliable". now... i know C.R. is impartial. and that it's all based on statistics. but maybe the numbers are just not all in for the later years? if the numbers show that 95 M3s are the most reliable M3 in ten years, (after they've pretty much all come and gone, and numbers are totalled up) i'll eat this computer i'm typing on. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. White smoke means water in the combustion chambers. Too much gas results in black smoke. Take it to a mechanic and have a leak-down test. If you get bubbles in the radiator, you have a bad head gasket. ===== David Kroth david_kroth@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
