#1. DME update requires sending to service center? - from Edwards, Robert
Top
Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2000 12:38:56 -0400 From: "Edwards, Robert" <rme@mlis.state.md.us> Subject: DME update requires sending to service center? I saw a reference to a DME update for M3s which requires sending the DME to a BMW service center to be updated, so one has to leave the car at the dealer for a couple days while it is done. The reference was to build dates earlier than sometime in '99. Apparently, someone took her '99 M3 in for Inspection I, and the dealer told her he had to have it for two days, for this reason. Is anyone aware of this, and what the software update is supposed to fix? Why would it be necessary to send the DME to the service center? Regards, Bob '97 M3/4

#2. Spearco water injection - from Scott G Hemauer

The Spearco water injection kit has been used successfully by many in these turbocharged applications as well. Lower intake temps, less detonation at higher boost, etc. I don't think the benefits would be that great in a non-turbo application. I've recently heard from someone from Spearco, which is a company which makes and sells intercooler and water injection solutions, mostly for VWs ........They have a water injection system they sell for bout $200, which they claim boosts power on a VW VR6 car by 22 hp on the dyno ...This is what the kit includes: * Compact .4 gallon aluminum reservoir with three mounting positions for universal placement in the engine compartment * Injects water upstream or downstream of the turbocharger/supercharger * Pump is controlled by an adjustable, O.E. quality pressure switch * Kit includes 3 different size, specially designed injection nozzles." He says they're about to install one on an M3, and told me he'd report back the results of testing....Does anybody know anything about this company? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

#3. EVIL, EVIL, EVIL BMW Dealers in the Bay Area... - from Peter Guagenti

After spending over $3000 in mechanical and $2500 on cosmetic repairs after the axle in my '96 snapped (long story), I still have a problem. The geniuses at Weatherford BMW, when pulling the tape off of my passenger side door, ripped the clear coat off with it. They are trying to fight me on it now saying that it's not their fault. Aaaaarrrggghhhh! So, my question is, does anyone have the contact information for BMW NA and/or for a BMWCCA ombudsman? I want to escalate this to someone who may have some influence, or at the very least inform them of the horrible service I've received. If anyone knows of someone to contact, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. -peterg

#4. Brake light circuit going banana - from Andy Chi

Basically, the dealer would replace the switch, and the message will go away for a while then come back. I just had it replaced again three weeks ago, now if I corcner hard on a bumpy onramp with ASC off, the OBC warning will come back. Then after I am done driving, I turn off the car then immediately turns it back on and the message goes away. Any ideas??? Thanks, Andy 98 M3 black/black __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - Free email you can access from anywhere! http://mail.yahoo.com/

#5. [E36M3] OTC floor jack for M3 usage - from GSM M3

Date: Thu, 07 Sep 2000 17:45:26 GMT From: "GSM M3" <carpediemm3@hotmail.com> Subject: [E36M3] OTC floor jack for M3 usage Group, Please forgive the "off-topic" request. Does anyone have any experience w/ OTC brand service floor jacks. I went to pick up the special order Lincoln (model 93642 - $299USD), of which I clearly asked and was told "made in USA." There on the box, big as life, "fabrique in Taiwan." I'm kickin' myself for not getting it a year ago, before the Taiwan purchase. However, they told me about a 2 ton unit made by this OTC outfit, which has the same specs basically - 3 3/4" pickup height, w/ a max height of 20". It's not as nice looking as the blue & yellow Lincoln, but in this case, function must surpass form. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you want to do WI right, contact Aquamist. They make several kits, one is even computer controlled so you can map water just like fuel. Keep in mind you won't make any more HP on a displacement-type blower. Also, if you place the WI nozzle downstream of the throttle, you need a check valve so that engine vacuum doesn't pull water out. -Al 95 M3 91 Miata, supercharged, WI-ed, 8 psi At 10:48 AM 9/7/00 -0500, you wrote: ---- >Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2000 06:17:18 -0700 (PDT) >From: Matt Henson <hensonator@yahoo.com> >Subject: Re: [E36M3] Anyone ever heard of Spearco? > >Paul, >A bunch of DSM owners got together on a group purchase >of the Spearco WI kit. #7. Re: [E36M3] Spearco water injection - from Matt Henson

Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2000 11:36:16 -0700 (PDT) From: Matt Henson <hensonator@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Spearco water injection Scott, I have to disagree here. I'm biased but Water Injection does have applications in non-forced induction cars. The basic principle remains the same - reduce the air charge temp to reduce detonation. If you have a fairly high compression NA engine you will probably have to run more less timing advance than ideal to prevent detonation. Retarding the timing reduces the combustion chamber temps (good) but also reduces power (bad). Injected water can be very effective at controlling the temps, allowing you to run more timing that would otherwise be possible. The effect is much more significant in Forced Induction applications since you are also lowering the actual intake charge temps rather than just the combustion chamber temps. I believe that dyno results quoted for the Spearco unit were for a VR6, which is a NA car. Probably they could have made some of the increase by running a higher base timing in the "before" dyno. The real question for NA owners is whether the fairly minimal typical gains are worth the added cost, complexity and maintainance. I'd expect that you wouldn't get more than a few HP for NA engines. I've seen turbo cars running WI increase their boost from 17psi to 22psi with the same fuel and timing. In those cases (GN cars) the power increase was around 60-75HP. I think that they were also running some Methanol with the water.. -Matt --- Scott G Hemauer <Scott.G.Hemauer@aexp.com> wrote: > Date: 07 Sep 2000 09:46:51 -0700 > From: "Scott G Hemauer" <Scott.G.Hemauer@aexp.com> > Subject: Spearco water injection > > Spearco intercooler cores are used extensively in > import turbo > cars.....Eclipse, Supra.
