Date: Fri, 8 Sep 2000 14:03:06 -0400 (EDT) From: tsalva@ix.netcom.com Subject: RE: Tires for M3 Sedan Hello Ray, FWIW: I just replaced the OEM MXX3s on my 98 M3/4 with the new and very cheaply pricied Kumho Ecsta 712s in stock 225/45-17 F & 245/40-17 R config. I only have a few 100 street miles on them but so far am very pleased. They are wear rated at 280 - approx. 2x what the MXX3s are - so they are not as sticky (more sliding with TC off) but conversely they should last longer. The best news: $95. each + installation at local Discount Tire - that honors the DT Direct mail order pricing. So I can buy 2-3 sets of the Kumho's for price of 1 set of MXX3s or Pilot Sports. Note: I use Yok A032Rs for track use (235/40-17 all 4 corners) and Pirelli Winter Ice Assem. (215/45-17 on 17x8 wheels) for winter driving. The Winter Ice tire is great. Expensive, but I like them more than the MXX3s I had before. The Pilots seem to be better in the wet than the MXX3s. Mxx3s had a better "on-rails" feel, during any turning maneuvers, but over all, for a daily driver, I prefer the Pilots if it gets wet. KLB 99M3/2 BSBBS

Any suggestions, comments, recommendations? Thanks One of those questions that'll get as many answers as people responding :-) FWIW, I replaced the OE MXX3s with Pilot Sports and have been very happy with them. The handle well in both wet & dry, are quiet on the freeway (I have a 100 mile RT commute), and seem to be lasting reasonably well (in the neighborhood of 40K miles so far - I'm easy on tires - Hi Sean! :-)). It does help to be able to rotate them F<->R, and I've had them swapped side-to-side to further increase their wear. At ~$270/tire, gotta get every last bit out of them :-) Hope that helps, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - Pilot Sports for the street, Toyo RA-1 for the track

#5. [E36M3] Knock Sensor #2, - from Eric.C.Dotson@travelers.com

Date: Fri, 8 Sep 2000 15:03:36 -0400 From: Eric.C.Dotson@travelers.com Subject: [E36M3] Knock Sensor #2, Richard, Bora, and Matt are all getting code 1226. Well I'll chime in with a hearty "me too!" I replaced knock sensor #2 back in June and it did not fix the problem, as the CE light kept coming on. However, after pulling the plugs and cleaning them and all of the coil connections and cleaning the oil out of the #2 plug hole, the problem has pretty much dissappeared. In the last two months the CE light has flickered maybe twice. Coincidence? Dunno. My WAG is that it is an ignition system problem, not a knock sensor problem. The fact that several of us have replaced the sensors to no avail leads me to believe that even more. Also interesting - we all have '95 M3's. Build problem? Coils going bad? My car is a 9/95. Matt tends to believe it's the torque on the sensor bolt and he has a very valid point, but that doesn't explain why the codes are being set in the first place. Why would it loosen (or tighten) after 5 years without being touched? I'd love to hear any input on this. Eric 95 M3 95 325i

C'mon - just because Firestone made a few *small* errors in their Sport Futility tires doesn't mean the Bridgestone PP's aren't respectable!! Help me out here people!! :-) I've found my PP's to be much much much better in the rain, and about as good in the dry as my MXX3's. Date: Fri, 8 Sep 2000 14:38:55 -0700 From: "juan_rico" <juan_rico@captionsinc.com> Subject: Mixing tires... Is anyone out there mixing tires? I've just mounted brand new SP 9000's in the rear and still running my Michelins MXX3 up front. I thought I'd get away with this on a temporal basis... WRONG! How does the car handle? It's an absolute nightmare. The car swerves, darts and is just downright scary. Is this because of the different tread or could it be that somehow my alignment just went berserk? Tirerack advises not to mix different brands and patterns, but I always thought this was for liability reasons on their part... Can it really have such a drastic effect? I've had AVS Sports with SP 9000's before and never had a problem. Maybe because they both have a groove pattern. Now I'm stuck with forking over another $550 for two SP 9000's... Any ideas?

#10. Lincoln floor jacks, response from Lincoln - from Jeff Kumler

Date: Fri, 08 Sep 2000 17:09:19 -0500 From: "Jeff Kumler" <jdkumler@comdisco.com> Subject: Lincoln floor jacks, response from Lincoln FYI After all the confusion regarding the Lincoln floor jacks, I went to the horses mouth as it were and received the response below: Jeff >>> <ccasey@Centurymfgco.com> 09/08/00 01:23PM >>> Chris Casey@PENTAIR 09/08/2000 01:23 PM Jeff You do have some confusing information that I will try to straighten out for you. 1. USA2000 sold by Pep Boys, Sears and others were all made in the United States. They do have a two piece handle. 2. CJ5000 sold by Costco was also made in the US and had a two piece handle. Both of the above models are no longer available fropm Lincoln. If the distributors still have them in inventory then they are product that was left over from production that finished in December of 99. The Lincoln W93642's have been comming out of Taiwan since January of this year. This is also true for the NAPA 91-642. It is true that we continued to supply Snap-On Tools (YA642) with USA models because we built up inventory prior to switch but they are now recently all shipped to Snap-On. We are nearing production of a new made in USA model W93652 that will be a three ton model. This production will begin in October and the jack will be available in November. Again just to confirm, if you bought a model USA2000 you can be sure that it was produced in the US. I am sorry that you were confused by the information published on the web site that you indicated. Unfortunatly they do not confirm their information prior to publishing it. Chris Casey Product Manager-Lifting "Jeff Kumler" <jdkumler@comdisco.com> on 09/08/2000 10:02:32 AM To: Chris Casey/CenturyHQ/PENTAIR/US@Pentair cc: Subject: [E36M3] RE: (Lincoln floor jacks (was OTC floor jack for M3 usage) Could you respond to following information that I have copied below? I purchased a Lincoln floor jack at Pep Boys and am VERY conscious about purchasing only USA made tools. If this is true I am extremely unhappy with my recent purchase and would like to here your comments. Jeff Kumler When did you buy them, from where, and when were they produced??? * A&I Supply $299 - A&I sells the Taiwanese made model. The price used to be $288 for U.S.A. made model which they no longer have available. * Harbor Freight $299 - Harbor Freight still has the Taiwanese made models. * Pep Boys $250 - Pep Boys sells the USA 2000 Eagle Series which does not have the flanged sides and is not quite as strong as the W93642 model and only comes with a three-year warranty. Recently, Pep Boys raised the price to $250 from $199 and I have had difficulty tracking down one as they are not readily available. These are made in Taiwan even though they say USA 2000 on them and made in the USA. * Costco $160 - Costco's floor jack is similar to the Eagle Series which is sold at Pep Boys. Just because yours say they are USA made does it mean they really are made in the USA. They even kept the same part number for that matter (W93642) for the Taiwan model. If you do not believe me, ask someone at Otto Service (http://www.hyjacks.com/). None of the two piece handled jacks were made in the USA even though they do say made in the USA. It is a new marketing program of Lincoln. Continue to tell people they are made in the USA and they may believe you ;-) Check this out as well (http://www.hyjacks.com/H314.HTM) I could be wrong. Someone may have swapped your handles with those made in Taiwan. But I doubt it.
