#2. RE: sporadic rotor warpage? - from Monty Baugh

Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 11:27:29 -0500 From: Monty Baugh <mbaugh@telecom-management.com> Subject: RE: sporadic rotor warpage? There have been several reports on the digest of M3 rotors warping under high temps and then returning to near-true upon cooling. I've never had that luck. When my rotors have warped, it was permanently. Warping is caused by several factors, including high temps (vigorous usage), inclusions in the casting, worn wheel bearings, etc. You can usually get machine warped rotors back to true (once, then the thickness will not exceed minimum spec), but having less mass makes them even more susceptible to overheating and warping. Guess the answer, as always, is to throw large $ at the problem. I hear that SteveD's big brake kits are excellent, though afterwards one must be careful not to get oneself rear-ended by a cop (tip o' the hat to JimP). MBaugh

FWIW though, I do not like the 9000's & would not recommend them.. the Pilots are MUCH better.. feel, absolute traction etc... Good Luck Lee 97 M3/4 31K

Of course, they get very thin and warp pretty easily afterwards. :) (heh time to order some euro rotors for the street and keep track rotors for the track...) > Before I pull the trigger, I thought that I would seek the collective wisdom > of the list regarding track tires. Having just corded my current set of BFG > R1's, I seek a replacement set. I will not get the BFG's again (we all agree > they pretty much suck), therefore, I believe I have three choices: I can't find anyone that has tried the BFG R1/a. I suspect that they're going to work better on our cars, as long as you can get a decent amount of camber. (-3/-2) I think I might give them a shot... I've never been quite happy with Kumhos on heavy cars (yes, the E36 is a pig)... they get hot and tend to go away quite a bit, shortening not only their life, but your track sessions. The A032Rs and the RA-1s don't have the grip of the Kumhos/BFGs/Hoosiers. -kit 97 m3

Will this setup fit on the front? Tire Rack already cautioned me that it might not fit, so I'm hoping that someone here is using this setup without any problems. Also, any opinions on the 245/40 vs 245/45? I'm not sure which one to get, but want the same size tire/wheel setup all around. BTW, the cost for this entire setup (mounting, balancing, delivery) is about $1250....not too bad for wheels and tires. thanks, russell 99 dakar Russell: I have been told several times by Tire Rack that 245x40 17's won't fit at the front (on a 95 M-3). Also, my experience with replacement wheels is that the cheaper you go the more they weigh. Aesthetically, and for cleaning purposes, I love 5 - spoke wheels but Moda M-1's and Mille Miglia 5 spokes weigh a ton. I bought used BBS RK's - still too many spokes, but saving 10 lbs. plus at the rear wheels sure makes for snappier acceleration and of course less unsprung weight all around. The new SSR Integral is meant to be both light and 5-spoke and new, costs about the same as the BBS RK, circa $300 ea. They don't make 235/40-17, however the 225 kumho's are way wider the pilot sport 225's in fact the 225 Kumho's are just a hair slimmer then the pilot sport 245's. I have on rubbing issues up front and I did not add spacers or do any modifications. steve
