Jonathan and Rich ask about fuel starvation at the track: I don't know about it causing INTERNAL damage, but it can cause a lot of EXTERNAL damage - like totaling your car! We all know what Lift Throttle Oversteer is? It occurs in a corner if you reduce the throttle too abruptly. Weight shifts to the front wheels much like applying the brakes. As a result, the rear wheels have less weight and the back end can come around, i.e., oversteers. Fuel starvation is the worst form of Lift Throttle Oversteer. You are not just "reducing" the throttle, it is completely cut off! Your rear wheels want to lock up, they have to turn over the dead engine. And there is nothing you can do about it! When it happens, mentally you know you need to apply more gas, but you could floor the gas pedal and it won't do a bit of good. There is no gas available. I had the pleasure of spinning off backwards at 90 mph into a mud bog at Texas World Speedway. It ripped every plastic body part off my M3 - under engine shroud, both corner triangle pieces, both front fender liners, one side skirt, rear valence. Cost about $800. Going off a track backwards can get very costly in a hurry. Someday I will install a second fuel pump. I'm not going to have it happen again. Until then, I do (and recommend) buy gas at the track even if it does cost $5 per gallon. That is a lot cheaper than totaling your M3. I doubt if the second fuel pump would be legal in most races. However, I don't plan to be doing any sanctioned racing with my M3. Could be a few things: 1) Exhaust leak between head and turbine (you'd hear it) 2) Turbo bearing problem (see if it spins freely and smoothly by hand.) 3) Air leak downstream of the compressor 4) Problem with the boost control system. If you have a boost controller it could be failing. 5) Something else?? You will need to get it checked out. Usually when a turbo fails it does one of three things: Either it grenades and impeller bits fly or the bearings sieze up and it won't spin any more. Or it loses the oil seals. If your bearing is starting to go, it won't be long before it makes no boost at all. Chances are that your problem lies elsewhere, though.
