Dealer replaced the switch gratis - took some time as they kept forgetting to order it. KLB99M///3/2 BSBBBS

Same as everything >else, just take it easy for a couple hundred miles? Or get up to 150 and >bring it down as quickly as possible? j/k there's really no "break in" for rotors. it's the pads that you ahve to worry about. all you have to do with rotors is let the pads have time to "mate" with the new metal. there's no special procedure to follow, but you won't get full braking power until they "mate" so be a little careful about tailgating. ;-) _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 20:02:34 EDT From: Aswtguy2c@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] Gas sending units (long) I don't think it has to do with the fuel. It most likely has to do with the design and engineering of the manufactuer and/or BMW.. just like what Mr. Jim Powell mentioned! I'll have to agree 100% on that one. The sending units fail all the time!!! Heck I even saw it done on Monday on a brand new E46! My friend worked on that car and had an open circuit. Haven't seen any problems on the E39 5-series or the E38 7-series YET! As for design and engineering, the Z3's fuel pump/sending unit has to be the most Roody-Pooh Candy Ass design I have ever seen. I had to replace one this afternoon because customer stated that after filling up the tank, the gauge would still read empty for awhile. There's a service bulletin on this matter and I followed the directions.. checked resistance at the pins, etc etc. Then it said to remove the sending unit. Oh boy, the Z3 (30k miles) has a full tank of gas and the sending unit is positioned at the side of the tank not like the E36 which is on top. What does this mean? I gotta manually pump out 3/4 of the fuel, oh by the way, to get to the sending unit, you have to cut the carpet behind the pass. seat! NICE JOB BMW! and lift up the front end of the E36/7. Removed the unit and Ohmed it out while moving the arm up and down. There's an open between the resistor. I checked out the new unit, test it.. (good), make sure the resistor is clean, pop it back in and pump back the fuel. Normally we tell the customer to come back when the tank is less than 1/2. In this case, customer was on vacation. I think my hair smells like hydrocarbons.. I wonder why. The Z3s sending unit has this clip that the arm level can get caught and will give an implausible reading... it's kinda dumb in how the NEW sending unit still has this damn clip! I cut that bitch off. By the way, my last job of the day was a towed-in '93 325iS (130k miles). Complaint is "Will start but will not idle" Well, I go to the car and man, car will crank, no start.. gees.. no idle! Checked for fault codes, none. I had a friend cranked the car for me while I smelled the tailpipe, which I didn't smell any hydrocarbons.. must be no fuel delivery? Ahhhhh... can it be the monkey crap fuel pump? Checked the fuse (#18) good. Checked both sending units. Pulled off the connector that powers up the pump, ignition switch to KL-15 or position #2 and got 12v. (good). Ohmed out the connector on the fuel pump.. had a reading of O.L which is high resistance or an open. Bad pump and sold a new one to the customer! I always test the new sending unit just incase its a defect and make sure the resistor is clean. Boy has it been a long day. I think BMW should get those sending units, shine it up real nice, turn that sunbitch sideways, and stick it straight up its candy ass! Have a nice day everyone! Jonathan Caldito

#9. E36 prices - from Paul Elliott

Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 20:39:41 -0400 From: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> Subject: E36 prices >>At the rate these prices are dropping, it may be best to sell your E36 now, << Gee, that's strange....We've been noticing just the opposite...Seems '99s are selling in the very high 30s or low 40s. Even 97s are selling in upper 30s...Check latest roundel, and others....I agree, nows the time to sell, not because they're dropping like a rock, but because the prices are really holding well! I think we' re good shape...If '97s are going for upper 30s now, when folks are saying prices are dropping, they'll only get stronger as people start to experience personally how hard the E46s are going to be to come by for the next year or two. And sticker shock will also turn a lot of them away, sending them right to the nearest, well maintained, gorgeous, and affordable (relative to the E46) M3! _____________________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3; <20000 mi; Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift Kit and clutch stop; Skaags pedals

Date: Thu, 14 Sep 2000 00:57:06 GMT From: "reed nicholson" <reedthis48@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Faulty Ignition switch ?? Ray, It's part of the antitheft system. Occasionally the key does not go in just right, and the lock spins. Just take it out and reinsert and it will usually work. I think the dealers can replace it if you insist, but I'm told they replace it with a different part that doesn't employ the antitheft feature. I've chosen to keep mine.
