"I am new to the list, so forgive me if this has been brought up before, but has BMW ever gotten around to fixing the notorious squeaking clutch so prevalent on the E36? My car and almost every friend of mine who has one complains of this. This past week I drove a friend's car for several days and not only does her clutch pedal squeak badly but also her steering column squeaks too. As does she, when I forget to stop at those red glowing things at intersections.<g> Stop lights, yeah, those. Michael" To all of you E36 owners who are experiencing the squeaky clutch pedal problem. There is a fix. It took three dealerships to find one that knew how to fix it, but I have been squeak-free for 5,000 miles now, so this seems to be the long term fix for the problem. Valencia, CA BMW did the fix. Have your SA pull the micro fiche for the clutch pedal assembly for a '99M3. Order 2 x part labeled #17. Dissemble assembly, install one #17 rubber washer on each side of the clutch pedal arm, between the arm and the #4 bushing. Do not lubricate at #4 as this will actually dry-out the bushing and make the problem worse. Someone posted a link to a copy of the microfiche when I originally posted this but I cannot find the link now. Good luck. John > John C. Hi John, Yep, tried that solution too (I think it was you who sent me the info - thanks!). It worked the longest of all solutions I tried, but the squeak is in fact back. I'd have to check my records, but I'm sure it's been more than 5000 miles since I had this done. Just a data point. Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4

#4.M3 Weird 5k RPM noise - from JUSTIN GERRY
Top
Date: Thu, 14 Sep 2000 17:23:36 -0400 From: "JUSTIN GERRY" <JGERRY@butchers.com> Subject: <E36> M3 Weird 5k RPM noise I have a '97 M3 12/96 production that has a weird resonating harmonic (best description I can think of) at 5000 rpm. The noise can be reproduced in neutral, and is the same in 1st,2nd, 3rd gears etc. (Road noise eventually masks it)..... The noise is more previlant when accelerating slowly to 5k. Its like the motor picks up the vibration and resonates it through the whole motor. I have been in and out of my local dealer for over a month on this. Thank god I have warranty. So far they have replaced: 1) Power steering pump and bracket and belt 2) One of the upper pulleys (I think) 3) VANOS, and all the associated hardware 4) Catalytic Convertor From what I have been told, when you disconnect the VANOS the problem goes away. I am not so sure about that seeing how they replaced everything in the VANOS. The next thing they are looking at is replacing a exhaust header (4-6). What about the harmonic balancer on the lower pulley? How would I check this? Anybody have any other ideas? I live in the Boston/Metrowest area, if anybody wants to listen to my motor let me know. Thanks, Justin -- '76 02 (Whimsical) (they all buzz) '97 M3 (Orion) (abnormal buzz...) BMW CCA#77056 check out http://users.vei.net/jgerry

I've had mine worked on twice, and it still aqueaks.<< Ron's is the preferred fix, however, mine started squeaking a few thousand miles ago. I took out the can of WD-40 with the long red straw in place, ie, not lost yet! I aimed it high as I could into the bushing area, and put some paper down to catch it....I sprayed Plenty! When done, I excercized the clutch, which still squeaked, so I thought I'd have to try a more time consuming fix...However, the next day, it had totally disappeared...And from that point on, it's smooth as silk again, with no hint of that annoying affront to the aural senses. _____________________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3; <20000 mi; Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift Kit and clutch stop; Skaags pedals
