#1. M3 suspension upgrade? - from Gerry Miranda

Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 13:29:33 -0700 (PDT) From: Gerry Miranda <gerry_miranda@yahoo.com> Subject: M3 suspension upgrade? Well, I'm currently deciding to upgrade the suspension on my car and would like to know what everyone thought of the following choices: 1) Dinan Stage 2 2)TC Kline Track Line 3)TMS Bilstien/HR setup 4)HR Coil overs 5) Koni Coilovers (under $1000) at tire rack. The car is a 97 M3/4. Used mainly for daily driving, some autocross and driver school. It's already running A032R on the streets so that just says performance over comfort but streetable. Thanks, Gerry ===== Gerry 97 M3/4 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages & get email alerts with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com/

Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 13:39:40 -0700 From: Patrick Sarne <PatrickS@HoyleDonnelly.com> Subject: I'll take Wheel Bearing for $500, Alex... OK, so it looks like the rumble is indeed a wheel bearing (thanks, Joe and Andrew). I would like to tackle this job myself and Steve D has a good right up on how to do this rather easily on his website (www.ultimategarage.com) on how to do this and it doesn't seem half as daunting as I would have thought. My next question is this... Short of dropping a load (not THAT kind of load...get your mind out of the gutter, Powell!) on the fancy-schmancy BMW bearing puller-do-hickey and installer-thing-a-ma-jig, what have you kind folks had success with in removal and installation of the front wheel bearing of the E36 M3? Anyone in the San Diego area have one that they'd like to loan me? Suggestions? Tips? Ridicule? OK, I can do without the ridicule... Much obliged, Patrick

(i race two groups) in that race, my entire exaust system fell off the car, and i ran over it with my right rear tire, seriuosly mangling one of my fragile/expensive hoosier racing tires. at least i did get to finish that race (though a lap down after coming into the pits to see if the tire was still holding air and all dangling pieces were taken off) is that the kind of fun you were talking about? P.S. racing/HPDing certainly IS fun. but things certainly DO break. ;-( _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Maybe this is not an optional piece for those of us who have turbo cars. The turbo install instructions say to remove it to make room for the pipes. But it gets hotter'n Hades in there on a hot day. Like can't touch anything under the bonnet hot. Sounds like we should find a way to add this piece back in, with the appropriate mods to make it fit. -Matt --- "Mount, Mike" <JMMn@pge.com> wrote: > Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 11:36:55 -0700 > From: "Mount, Mike" <JMMn@pge.com> > Subject: RE: [E36M3] Monday morning and shit happens > > Dragging sound? I know that I sure did (despite the toasted wheel bearing)...the first line of my original post even says so! Fortunately, I have a wonderful resource in this digest in which to help diagnose those problems that do arise. My favorite line of the weekend was by John DeMartino... "Now all he needs is a girlfriend to f*ck that all up." You had to be there, it was great. (John, did I quote you correctly?) Still high from the track, Patrick

I had a blast and actually managed to keep all my wheels on pavement (unlike some people.<hint: J'A'P :)>) It was an all around good time and no serious damage except for some egos. #10. steering racks revisited - from daanesh chanduwadia

Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 21:20:06 GMT From: "daanesh chanduwadia" <daanesh@hotmail.com> Subject: steering racks revisited About a year ago I found out that the rack in my '95 was shot. When I replaced it, I decided to go with the rack from a later M3 based on a)what I had seen on this list and b) what my mechanic told me re: the 95 being a variable ratio and the 96ŕ being fixed. Well, Fast Facts disagrees: vehicle Ratio lock-to-lock 1995 M3 15.4:1-19.8:1 3.0 1996 M3 variable (TBD) (TBD) 1997 M3 15.6:1* (ND) 1998 M3 15.6:1* (ND) 1999 M3 17.8:1* 3.2 95 325i/is 16.8 3.4 96,97 328i/is 16.8:1 3.4 1998 328i/is 15.4:1 3.2 1999 328i/is 15.4:1 3.4 *variable ratio; figure given is mean ratio I’m going to check part numbers (again) to see if they agree with the Fast Facts, and then my car to see what I have. For the record, I preferred the car before the change: while the variable ratio might not be optimum for autocross, the car feels twitchier at speed and requires more lock to negotiate sharp turns. The longer I have my M3, the more I wish I left it alone… daanesh chanduwadia p.s. with all this talk of wheel bearings, I found it interesting that the 1997 M3 has “stronger hubs.” But then again Fast Facts also lists “improved suspension geometry”, and “front anti-roll bar linked to struts for lighter weight and greater effectiveness.” _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. When I replaced my front wheel bearing it came right off with minimal force. If necessary, I think it's possible to make a fairly simple puller from pieces of metal or whatever lying around the garage. The hard part for me was finding the big honking socket for the big honking nut (32mm? 34?). It the end I found that harbor freight sold them for like $5. I've got a retail shop 10mins from my house so I have access to all kinds of ways to break my knuckles. Just make sure that you get new front and rear seals and a new dust cap along with the bearing assembly. I don't think that they are included as a kit. Good luck! -Matt --- Patrick Sarne <PatrickS@HoyleDonnelly.com> wrote: > Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 13:39:40 -0700 > From: Patrick Sarne <PatrickS@HoyleDonnelly.com> > Subject: I'll take Wheel Bearing for $500, Alex... > > OK, so it looks like the rumble is indeed a wheel > bearing (thanks, Joe and > Andrew).
