Twice the price, not _nearly_ twice as resistant to warping unless you have full duct work... and if you have full duct work, the stock rotors would be fine! Double your brake maintenance costs to lose a couple pounds of unsprung weight that you'll never notice. Also not legal in SCCA stock or street prepared classes (never an option on a US car). #3. best/worst vendors? - from Sue Kraft

Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2000 19:27:42 -0500 From: Sue Kraft <suekraft@mindspring.com> Subject: best/worst vendors? This may be getting a little off topic (bad list mistress!!) but someone suggested a customer service poll of the best/worst BMW vendors to go along with the best/worst mods for our M3. Seeing as we need to buy our upgrades somewhere, I guess this could be useful info to those on the list. I would have a tough time picking a best vendor, as most of them have been very nice to me, especially the ones on this list. I think perhaps they are all afraid of the whip :-) Josh at Eurosport, Ben and Rob at UUC Motorwerks, Rob at Top Notch Auto and Jim Mihal at JT-Designs have all gone above and beyond the call of duty to keep me smiling. (Steve at the Ultimate Garage is also very pleasant to deal with.) UUC Motorwerks recently allowed me to exchange a few items after 6 months with no fuss or muss, which I think is exceptional. As for the worst vendor, I can think of only a couple that I was not too pleased with. One would be MechTech where I bought my turbo and the other Korman. I bought a pair of tires from Korman that were not in the condition they represented them to be. One was suppose to be new, and the other like new. When I got them, one was new like they said, but the other was cupped and pretty much wore out. If the second tire had belonged to me, I would never have sold it to anyone. I most likely would have thrown it out, which is what I ended up doing with it. Suzy

Good conversations, too. Mediocre: - Pacific BMW - Don't always get orders correct, not great stock on hand. Good service though. - Bekkers - Great prices, good stock on hand. Pompous attitude and bad service work against them. Bad: - BPG - Never have stock on hand of the things I've tried to order, acceptable levels of service. - BMP Design - Overpriced, never have stock on hand when I've tried to order. Not very helpful with advice. These opinions are, of course, only my own and YMMV... -p

#5. UUC ERK carrier mods - from NickG

Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2000 23:51:58 -0400 From: "NickG" <nikog@MediaOne.net> Subject: UUC ERK carrier mods About a year and a half ago I installed a short shifter and UUC ERK. The shortened throws were great; I loved the upgrade. The only downside I noticed was that reverse and 5th gear were somewhat difficult to engage. I didn't have a clear feeling of when the gear was engaged (reverse would even pop out at times). On UUC's website, they indicate that some cars might have difficulty in reverse and 5th, so they recommend grinding the carrier for some clearance. Well, today I finally got around to clearancing the carrier. WOW, what a difference! I can't stress enough what a requirement this is when using the ERK. If you've already installed an ERK, or are planning to in the future, make sure to clearance the carrier. Reverse and 5th never felt so good ;-) Nick '95 M3 turbo

#6. Bullet High Performance contest (kinda long) - from Robert Chay

Date: Sun, 1 Oct 2000 00:59:37 -0700 From: "Robert Chay" <rchay@sitesmith.com> Subject: Bullet High Performance contest (kinda long) Who knew, I went there this morning to check out some nice M3's. I pull up and ask where I can park w/o entering the contest and the guy started pointing to the parking lot across the street. Screw that, how much to enter? $30? Okay, what the hell. They start the judging, call my name a couple of times, I get to my car and explain my mods. Rewind back a week. I was at Buttonwillow last weekend and gone most of the week up in Santa Clara and didn't have time to wash my car. I still had bug carcass all over the front of my car, marble marks all over, just plain dirty. You don't even want to know about the engine bay. (no q-tippers allowed!) So we go into race karts and I get stuck behind a slow guy and get 4th. Figures... I go outside and they start announcing the winners of the contest. Mind you, I haven't washed my car and there's tons of brake dust on my wheels, bugs splattered all over the front of my car, tire rubber marks all over the car, etc. And the interior is no better. I'm thinking this is a joke and I'll never get a thing. 3rd, not me... 2nd, not me... 1st, Bobby Chay... WHAT?!?!?!?! Are they blind??? There were a few really nice M3's with playstation2's, 3.5 stroked motors, superchargers, etc. And then there's my little M3 with a few mods (comparatively speaking) Remember, this IS a High performance contest, not show car contest (thank god!) Got a nice little plaque and little else. Sweet. Who knew? Bobby Chay http://rchay.home.mindspring.com/m3.htm

#7. Pulled over for my SS exhaust!! - from dennis quan

Date: Sun, 1 Oct 2000 01:22:35 -0700 (PDT) From: dennis quan <dcquan@yahoo.com> Subject: Pulled over for my SS exhaust!! Today, I was driving on 580 and I got pulled over by the California Highway Patrol. I was puzzled at first because I has seen the cop from far behind and I was obeying the speed law. The cop came up to my window and asked me whether my SS exhaust was legal or not. I told him that it was a legal exhaust. He then asked me whether I knew what I was talking about or not. I replied that my cats were still on and I will no problem passing smog. Well, it turns out that he was concerned about the noise level from my exhaust. I told him that my exhaust was the quietest aftermarket exhaust. He didn't believe me and he kept asking me if my exhaust was made by Greddy or not. I told him it was a Supersprint exhaust. At that point, he told me to turn on my vehicle and rev it up to 3000 rpm. He seemed rather disappointed that my exhaust was not loud at all. So he then asked me whether my driverside and passengerside windows were tinted or not. Both my windows were rolled down so I knew he couldn't tell but I didn't want to lie to him. So I played dumb and replied I dont know. He then tells me to roll my windows up a little bit. I roll them up and then he immediately tells me that he will give me a ticket for illegal tint. Well, it's no longer just a fix it ticket for tinted windows. It's much more expensive than the old 10 dollar fee. He didn't tell me how much it would be. And then, another car drives by with a super loud exhaust and the cop tells me that is an illegal exhaust. I was thinking "Why are you standing outside of my car instead of chasing after him to give him the stupid ticket?" Man, I am so pissed off because now I probably have a 100 dollar fix it ticket that I should of never gotten. Who gets pulled over for having a SS exhaust? There are so many more flashy exhausts out there. Well, I figured today was the last day of the month for the cop to reach his ticket quota and I happened to be the unlucky soul. Cops should have better things to do than pull people over with simple exhausts. Besides, what if I had the UUC exhaust, then what? I don't think he has the proper equipment to measure how loud my exhaust is. It's all very subjective. Damn it, I'm pissed off. My question is, did I have to raise my windows because the cop asked me too because that was not his original reason for pulling me over? #10. Petit Le Mans - from Paul England
Top
Date: Sun, 1 Oct 2000 09:56:25 -0400 From: "Paul England" <ettsn@mindspring.com> Subject: Petit Le Mans Wow. That was awesome. The most incredible part was being at the top of 'Porsche Hill' (before turn 8) for the opening lap. Hearing the entire field bunched up at WOT pass by you is akin to putting your head inside a jet engine. Major ear pain. I loved it. Road Atlanta has so many spectacular vantage points along it's route, that moving around provided us with many great perspectives. If you didn't go, or have never been, make plans to get to your nearest ALMS race next year. You'll LOVE it. Now, MBMWC: The PTG cars were running reasonably well in the Porsc... I mean GT class. One car bit it about turn 7 with a few hours to go. We saw it come back on a flatbed into the pits. The second car, with about 10 laps to go, popped in turn 10a-10b and came over the hill past us billowing smoke. Too dark to see if it was grey, black or blue so hard to guess what went, but something did. The LMRs? One got tangled up somehow away from where we were, and we didn't hear what happened, but we did see a mangled hulk come back to the paddock on a flatbed. So that leaves us with ONE BMW left in the whole shootin match. Well, fortune seemed to glimmer on at least one of our cars as it was in second overall and in class behind the #77 Audi (yellow one) that has been whipping everybody all year with about 18 laps to go when he came by without a rear spoiler! Didn't hear the story, but he pitted and didn't come by for a few minutes. Pretty sure he ended up in second overall and in LMP class, although we were pretty far from the podium at the end of the race. The radio broadcast was pretty weak and scratchy, so we couldn't make out the final tallys for sure, and the hometrack Panoz cars were breathing down his neck. (Heck, those guys' offices are at Road Atlanta, you'd think they'd have that track PEGGED!) Didn't really matter, I had a great time. And the cars! I think virtually every E30 M3 ever made must've been there. Seriously, we saw probably 90! And M5s of every vintage, M6s, an M1!!!!, a really nice 959 conversion, Aston Martins, and of course about 300 E36 M3s. Walking around the parking areas was worth the price of admission! Anyway, I'll stop rambling now. I think I'll be grinning into next week... -Paul England
