Is this normal? BEWARE. If it's more than just a little sloppy, get this checked out by a mechanic. For about a week, I was noticing that under a hard launch or acceleration the rear end of my street car (a '96 328i) would do what felt like a little sidestep. A week after it began, as I turned off of the highway to the BART station, the passenger side rear wheel breaks off and the car hits the ground. Can you say axle failure? Try $7000 worth of cosmetic and mechanical damage, and 6 1/2 weeks at the dealer. -peterg

Date: Mon, 2 Oct 2000 14:58:07 -0400 From: "Adam Fila" <ylf@mindless.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] PTG cars... One of the things to consider is that no team publishes real hp numbers for their engines. PTG, when the cars didn't break, has actally been holding it's own against most of the Porsche teams, except Barbour and Job. Barbour is the factory Porsche team, and most of the privateer teams are complaining that Porsche keeps all the new engine development to themselves. Notice that the Barbour cars usually put several laps on most of the other teams in each race. Rumors are that their engine has as much as 50 more hp than the regular GT3-R engine sold to other teams. Job might be in a simmilar situation, considering his factory ties (he helped develop the car last year with factory assistance) PTG's second problem is reliability in the endurance races. Especially those driveshafts and differentials. Take away Barbour and Job and PTG would look like this: Sebring - both cars broke (endurance race) Charlotte - 1st and 3rd Silverstone - 3rd and accident Nurburgring - 3rd and 5th (endurance race - both cars plagued with mechanical problems) Sears Point - 1st (DQ) and 2nd Mosport - 1st and 3rd Texas - 3rd and 4th (cars on pace, but plagued with mechanical problems, minor accidents) Portland - 1st and 2nd PLM - both cars broke (endurance race) I know this is not a fair comparison, but it illustrates that the PTG cars are competitive with most of the privateer GT3-R's, just not dominating them like they used to. Now they must try to become competitive with the factory Porsches - hopefully with BMW's promised increased involvement in the program next year there is a chance. Ideally BMW will make these cars available to other teams as well, either through PTG, or their own program. With a 50/50 ratio of Porsches and BMW's the races would be much closer and more interesting. However they probably need at least one season of running with and beating the Porsches to make the privateers interested in buying them. Let's hope next year is it :) -Adam Fila '95 M3 > Date: Mon, 2 Oct 2000 13:27:50 -0400 > From: Jeremy.Thissell@USPTO.GOV > Subject: PTG cars... > > I posted this on the bimmer.org MB earlier and have yet to get a response. > After reading the ALMS talk here, I figured I'd introduce the topic here and > see what kind (if any) responses I get back. > > I was just doing a bit of research on the PTG cars vs. the Porsche GT3R's > that both run in ALMS. See page 4 on: http://www.shortshifter.com/pdfs/UUC%20ERK%20Install%20Instructions%20Only.PDF Two quotes: "Tighten the bolts between 4-6 inch-pounds (not foot-pounds)" and [Bold Print] "Damage to the ERK due to overtightening is not considered a defect!" My guess is that UUC had many people calling and complaining that their ERK loosened up, and after providing multiple "free" replacement ERKs, discovered that people were overtightening the screws. Hence, the bold print disclaimer in their instructions. Perhaps this disclaimer wasn't in the early instructions that you may have received. I installed my UUC SS in September, 1999, and the bold print disclaimer was in there. In any case, if UUC wouldn't _give_ you a replacement ERK, did you inquire about _purchasing_ a replacement ERK? Personally, I would rather admit to messing up the ERK and paying for a replacement, rather than drive around with a loose shifter and a personal vendetta, but, maybe I'm an oddball... :-) -rb >Date: Mon, 2 Oct 2000 07:00:23 -0500 >From: Andy Korczynski <Andy@casskor.com> >Subject: RE: [E36M3] Re: UUC Short Shifter > >Just for the record I wasn't trying to BASH anyone for the hell of it. If you are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on possibly illegal modifications, then don't bitch when you get caught. Like a speeding ticket, think of it as a cost of doing business and if you didn't deserve it this time, you probably didn't get one when you should have. And don't stigmatize all cops as jealous because they pull you over. There may be some who are but overall I've had a lot more help from them than hassle even when driving my 240 Z, 2002 and now M3. When I have been stopped it's been because I got careless about watching my speed or had what the officer thought were illegal seatbelts. Must have been the cop's fault I was speeding. #7. E46 M3 GT3 versus 911 - from jbergstrom

I'm not sure about the exact weight of a road version GT3, but I expect ~3000 lbs.<<<< According to PTG's website the new 2001 M3 GT3 car is 2420lbs unladen. If I remember correctly (someone help me out here!) the E36 M3 GT3 was around 2600lbs. I think you would be HARD pressed to take any more significant weight off either of these cars, they are stripped bear-bones already and probably have fiberglass and/or carbon fiber body panels. I have no idea what the Porsche weighs. Watching the ALMS race at Texas Motor Speedway in Sept, the cars seemed pretty evenly matched on the straights, and the battles appeared to be more in the turns and through traffic. Several times I watched the M3's outbrake the 911's in order to pass in the long-and-hard braking zones. This was just from my vantage point, though. But I have read Milner and PTG's drivers repeatedly say that the Porsche is faster on the straights for whatever reason. John '95 M3
