Date: Thu, 5 Oct 2000 19:41:58 +0200 From: John Demartino US-Valencia <j.demartino@us.qiagen.com> Subject: Mileage Interesting observation... According to my "Consum" consumption button on the OBC of my 99M3, I have averaged 22.1 MPG over many thousands of miles (probably 10K or so since I last reset Consum 1). About a month ago, I switched to RedLine 10W40, from the Factory synthetic, and a short time with Mobil 1 15W50). I just happened to reset the "Consum 2" and have averaged 24.2 MPG over about 700 miles of the same type of driving (a couple commute days, plus weekend blasts in the mountains). Can this really be due to the oil? I believe the 700 miles is enough to settle into a representative average. > John C. #4. "Inside" tire? - from Ed Tang

How is the outside and at which point of the cornering defined?: >On the other hand, getting the "outside" front tire >off the ground is >probably really easy but would usually involve >airbags, rollbars, body >work and insurance agents.... At a corner upon braking, the weight transfers to the "outside" front tire at the corner and upon accelerating out, the "outside" front tire picks up because the weight is transferred to the inside rear wheel. With the tremendous pull of the fabulous M3 motor, I can transfer the weight quite definitively. To answer the "why doesn't the factory put x-braces on non-convertibles?" question, I would only assume they are saving on costs. I assume it is required on the convertibles and on the lightweight, you pay more for the extras: x-brace, splitter, oil pan baffle, huge wing, sunroof delete. I'll bet 90% of the M3's during it's production run were purchased by people who wouldn't know or care what an X-brace is, as the handling was more that sufficient for that group. I have a 1/95 build and it was good to go. I am not sure (I'll wait for the 10 correction replies:), but I think the nutsert issue was for anything on or before 9/94 m/y. Do yourself a favor and jack up the car, look at the single piece brace. About 1 1/2 feet fore of it, you should see holes in the crossmember area. I think there are about six holes or so. You can check these holes to see if they are threaded. If they are, you're in business. I did the check and ordered the part. I know there has been a ripple in the Nick Alexander camp recently, but that's where I got mine. $102 with the bolts (they screwed up and gave me extra which came in handy when I overtorqued one) with no shipping charge. It came in three days and it took me a half an hour because I had to drill out the overtorqued bolt. Otherwise it probably would have taken me ten minutes. When they say it's a bolt on mod, it really is. Ed Tang 95 Cosmos M3 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! This is on California oxygenated gasoline which has about 10% less energy content than that available in the rest of the country.
