#2. #609 Does UUC System U quiet down? - from Scott Richardson

Date: Fri, 6 Oct 2000 07:15:26 -0400 From: "Scott Richardson" <srichardson@topworx.com> Subject: #609 Does UUC System U quiet down? Rob, I've had a UUC system U exhaust on for around 5,000 miles and I'm convinced that it doesn't get much quieter, you just get used to it. I was thinking about getting rid of it at first and actually took it off the car, but after hearing that it'd quiet down I put it back on and it's been there ever since. I'm still waiting. It might be a little quieter than when it was new, but not much. I'm not too fond of it for long trips, and my wife hates it, but it looks so cool I can't bring myself to take it off. I've decided I'll probably just put the stock exhaust on for long trips (infrequent) and winter. UUC the rest of the time. I just installed my UUC System U cat-back and it looks and sounds great, although I find it a bit too loud for me. I don't understand how it could be possible but I've heard a few System U owners say that it gets *quieter* after a few weeks. Is this true? How? Anyone wanna' trade an almost new System U for something else? Thanks, Rob

No more remembering to turn off ASC in the paddock. Total cost is like $1.50, seriously. I installed it in a friends car as well because she had to use a sticky note to remind herself to turn it off all the time. No problems with the install in the 6+ months I have had it. The switch still works like normal, its just turned off when you start the car. Shane Kleinpeter Tarheel Chapter '96 M3 <-- ASC always off '88 535is <-- No damn traction control to worry with

#5. engine balance / vibration - from RFKoby@aol.com
Top
Date: Fri, 06 Oct 2000 08:39:10 EDT From: RFKoby@aol.com Subject: engine balance / vibration just to correct the original post..... an in-line 6 cylinder fires a power pulse every 120 degrees. As in these are 4 cycle engines, which means it take 720 degrees of crank revolution to do a complete cycle. So, all 6 cylinders fire in 720 degress, NOT the 360 that the previous post stated. So 720 degrees / 6 cylinder yiels 120 degrees for each power pulse. bob -------------------- 5 -------------------- Date: Thu, 05 Oct 2000 22:31:07 -0500 From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> Subject: Re: Vibration on 10/2/00 20:25, E36M3 at e36m3@bmwmpower.com wrote: > On another thread, I've been discussing motor configurations and such with > a coworker. So I don't see where vibration would be coming from. While an inline six does have perfect primary and secondary balance, there is torsional vibration due to the length of the crankshaft. Neil 96 M3

#6. Ext. temp sensor & temp. alarm - from BHilton@rhythms.net

Date: Fri, 6 Oct 2000 07:29:41 -0600 From: BHilton@rhythms.net Subject: Ext. temp sensor & temp. alarm With all this talk of the GT3 series the subject of the external temperature sensor is pretty boring. Nevertheless, I must know. 1) Where is the external temperature sensor located? 2) There is an audible "ding" sound when the external temperature hits 38 degrees. I assume the previous owner set this alarm threshold, although I have no idea why someone would pick 38 degrees. At any rate, can this be reset? Thanks, Bret 95 M3 ( Denver, CO )

Because I bought late deleting the sunroof or power seats was not > an option. I used to have a problem finding a good seat position in my '97 M3 (2 door) when autocrossing - had to contort the seat and myself because of the helmet smacking the headliner. Earlier this year I installed a Schroth Rallye 4 belt on the drivers side. I find that the schroth belt pulls me down into the seat far enough so I don't have any problems wearing a helmet. I usually end up moving the seat forward a notch, as the belt pulls me away from the steering wheel / pedals at the same time. The schroth made a huge difference for autocrossing, I highly recommend it. I thought I was fairly well braced in the darth vader seat with the stock belt, but you really don't realize how much you tense up to stay seated behind the wheel (at least during an autocross). Not exactly what you asked for, but it achieves the same end result! Andrej '97 M3

#8. Ball Joints - from Junaidi Irwan

Date: 6 Oct 00 10:43:18 CDT From: Junaidi Irwan <junaidi.irwan@usa.net> Subject: Ball Joints Group, I have a question regarding the ball joints and control arms. The right ball joint in my car is pretty much busted. I can feel the vibration when I make a left turn. The question that I have is that the service advisor that I brought my car to told me that the ball joint is part of the right control arm and in order to replace the ball joint, I have to buy a whole new set of control arm. Is this true? Isn't ball joint separated from control arm and by itself is replaceable without changing the control arm? Thanks a lot beforehand for any advice! This is set from the factory this way, I don't know of any way of changing that. It's a freezing road / bridge warning. One of the 'features' or 'quirks' of the car, I've just learned to live with it. Andrej '97 M3

Why did BMW engineers leave the X-brace out from the >factory? >There's obviously a reason. Just curious... while i agree in general... (thick before you modify) the xbrace IS a factory part that's installed on the convertibles. so it can't be horribly bad for your car. i suppose the convertible might have some minor differences but if there was EVER a mod that was going to have no downsides, the xbrace is it. why is it not on all e36s? well... the convertible was made later. and they created the xbrace because they discovered the convertible was too flimsy without a roof. so now they have this new part. why waste $100 per car to install it on all e36s? noone will miss it. and even the mighty BMW tries hard to save money. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
